I was thinking about it the other day, it's interesting (only to me I'm sure) that the cars I've owned have been an '88, a '94, a '98 and an '04. My next vehicle apparantly will be an '08, but not for another four years or so.
Do you remember your cars? Were they new or used? I thought it would be interesting to see your progressions!
Here's mine. 1988 Plymouth Horizon (white). New. Cost: $6995.00 Miles I Milked it for: 160,000
It was practical, it was cheap, it was my squeeze limo.
---------
1994 Pontiac Sunbird (purple). New. Cost: $13000 Miles I Milked It For: 188,000
The purple bird as I called it, the thing had problems since the day I bought it. The first six months it spent more time in the shop than in my driveway. I think this was the car that made me realize I didn't have to have a NEW vehicle. Problems arise on them new or old.
---------------
1998 Chevy Venture (blue). USED. 92,000 Miles. $7600 Miles I Milked It For: 69,000 Yeah, people poke fun at me for driving a soccer mom vehicle, but it's a comfortable ride, roomy front seats, and I love being able to haul stuff.
The one shown could be my car, it's identical.
-------------------
2004 Dodge Caravan (greyish green). Used. 49,000 Miles. $8600 Miles I Milked It For: To be determined
My first car was a 1980 Datsun B210 sedan... red. I don't remember the mileage when I got it, but my mom paid $1800 for it. Sold it to a friend who managed to lock up the engine for not changing the oil.
With the money I got for selling that car, I put a down payment on the only brand new car I ever owned... 1989 Nissan Sentra sedan, charcoal grey. It died a horrible death in 1993. Hence, the beginning of Undead Day.
Next was a black 1986 Ford Taurus LX. Had to learn to love that car. It was nice, but I wanted a Mercury Cougar.
Traded that for a dark green metalic 1995 Ford Taurus LX... LOVED that car. I would still have it to this day if it hadn't started having transmission problems.
Somewhere in there, I used to own several of the vehicles Kevin drove.. 1986 Ford Ranger 4X4, 1986 Ford F-150 with a straight 6... no frills, no air... 1995 Ford F-150
Present day: I own 3 vehicles... white 1998 Ford Explorer Sport, white 2001 Ford Excursion Limited, and a 2001 Harley Davidson Road King!

Wish I could! I would gladly take ya out for a cruise! Some fine day I will put that bike to it's intended use. I'm even going to get a bubble topped side car for Pambo... she doesn't do the convertible thing with the Trigeminal Neuralgia.

I think in 160,000 miles the car had it's oil changed MAYBE six times. I know I went atleast 30,000 once without a change.
I remember that because when I took it into the mechanics they came back to me and said "HOLY CRAP! How long has it been since you changed your oil, it's coming out like jelly!"
I just lied and said "oh really, I think it's been about 4,000 miles or so".

yeah, oil was expensive back then...at least .29 a quart.
I had a 78 Green Grenada that my dad used for work and I used on the weekends. We split gas and the cost of liability insurance on it. This was like in 1986-88.
In 1988 I bought an 84 renault alliance.
in 1992 I got an 84 firebird. In 94 I bought an old 78 Thunderbird that was garbage.
In 1994 I bought my first new car, a ford escort.
In 2005 I bought 05 my mazda 3.

But hey, it was a four cylinder car so I'd say I got my moneys worth out of it AND saved on oil.
By the end it was smoking really bad anytime I drove it. I actually got pulled over one night because it was smoking so bad. The officer said "do you know you're cars smoking?" I think he was being a wise-ass because we were both choking on the smoke as he asked the question so YEAH! I NOTICED!
He couldn't even give me a ticket or a warning, I don't know why he bothered pulling me over. It was as if he actually felt he needed to tell me it was smoking, in case I hadn't noticed.
Name: The USS Slug 1979 Buick Century, sludge gray Purchased in 1997 for $200 Driven for: 1 hour
I bought this car from my stepdad's friend. My stepdad fixed it up, and had it ready for my birthday. After my party, my friends and I went to a movie, and of course we all piled into my new car. One thing that was bad and we didn't know it was the thermometer. On the way home from the movie, the engine overheated, water got mixed in with the oil, and the engine seized.
Name: Louie 1982 Cutlass Supreme, iguana blue Purchased in 1998 for $600 Driven for: 9 months
I loved this car. It was this blue color that sometimes looked green, black, or gray, so I named it after the iguana from the Budweiser commercials. The seats were so comfy. But this car started stalling at random intervals (sound familiar JR?), so it wasn't trustworthy anymore and I got a good deal on an ugly van. I joked that I just wanted a car to get me from point A to point B, not necessarily back again.
Name: Frankie T. Van 198something Chevy Minivan, gray Purchased in 1999 for $100 Driven for: 1 month
I bought this site unseen. My stepdad had a friend that was selling it really cheap, and my stepdad was my mechanic. So he took a look at it and test drove it for me and drove it home for me. I took it out for a drive, and the transmission seized up the first time I drove it. My stepdad flushed the transmission, which gave it another month, but it just couldn't make it. That's okay, I didn't really like the van anyway.
Name: Quatro 1989 Cutlass, primer gray Purchased in 1999 for $600 Driven for 1 year
I named this car Quatro because it was my 4th car. I killed this car. I was driving home from work when I stayed too long during a weather advisory for a mixture of sleet and snow. There was this one hill on my way home from work that was also a curve. I cranked the steering wheel and pumped the brake, but the car still kept going straight. It hit the curb on one side of the Burger King exit, became airborne for a second, and landed smack on the other curb (and these were pretty high curbs, maybe a foot high). I broke both axles.
Name: Aldo Nova 1973 Chevy Nova, red with white stripes Purchased in 2000 for $700 Driven for 5 months
This was such a pretty car, but it was a disaster! Someone had put a sunroof in it, which of course leaked. All the window seals were rotted, which of course leaked. We found that out by going through a car wash. Also, if I went over 45 miles per hour, the entire car would shake. I only drove this car long enough until my parents bought a new car and sold me their old one.
Name: The Lumina 1992 Chevy Lumina, dark red Traded in 2000 for the Nova, which sold for $600 Driven for 4 years
I was delighted to get this car! A car that had been made fairly recently compared, and was, gasp!, reliable! This was the car that got us down to Bloomington. Then one day it wouldn't start. It was probably a cheap fix, the starter or the alternator, but I was done. At that point, I was sick of crappy cars, I wanted one I could trust.
Name: Blue 1999 Saturn SC1, 3 door coupe, blueberry blue Purchased in 2004 for $8000 Driven for 4 years
Aw, my beautiful Blue! What a good car. The few times it broke down, it did it at the most convenient place. I loved this car, and I miss it. I've heard it now has a new engine and I might see it around town. This is the one I sold earlier this year after the engine seized, but I decided that buying a new car was a better investment.
Name: Luvie 2005 Pontiac Grand Am, silver Purchased this year for $10,000
Compared to my old cars, this one is pretty boring. But it drives great and is dependable, and I like it. In fact, when we were on vacation I drove a brand new Charger, and I like the way my car drives better.
I leased the Chevy. That was why it went back. It wasn't worth the buyout price. I wanted to get out of leasing for two reasons: I wanted to actually own a car and the mileage I am driving everyday. It cost me a chunk of change when I turned the car in. I was over by 8,000 miles. And I was laid off for six months and didn't really go anywhere. So, I went with the Escape. Maybe I should have just leased a new Chevy Trailblazer.

Stop trying to be what you see. Be what you ought to be.
My first vehicle was a 1975 Chevy Blue/White pickup that I bought when I was a senior in highschool. I paid $1,800 for it and it had about 40,000 miles on it. I had it accessorized pretty nice . . . or at least what an 18 year old guy thought was nice.
I drove that pickup for about four years. The odometer quit working at 80,000 and I put a lot of miles on it after that so I don't know how many miles it had.
I traded the pickup for a '79 El Camino SS. I really loved that car/truck. It was beefed up and ran quite well. It had a positrack rear end (both rear wheels had power) and 12" tires on the back. It would smoke the tires pretty easily.
It was a little lighter blue than this one but looked just like it other than color:
The El Camino had one problem . . . it would vapor lock and run rough at slow speeds. I got tired of working on it and traded it in towards in a brand new 1990 Mazda 2600i:
Mine is the same color except its 4wd and extended cab.
I still have the pickup.
I bought a 1990 Astro cargo van for work. I liked it so much, I then traded it for the van I have now which is a 1994 Astro:
My wife's first car was a 1982 Cavalier that they bought new:
Her's was a darker blue too.
She still had that when we got married and we drove it on our honeymoon.
We later traded the Cavalier in on an '87 Mercury Cougar:
Ours was that same metalic brown color. It really was a nice car. It rode nice, drove nice and it had that all digital dash which was cool. We both loved that car . . . until winter hit. That car was completely worthless if it was the least bit slick. If one back wheel was on a bit of ice or snow, you were stuck. I think we fought it for two winters and traded that for a brand new 1994 Mazda 626:
Ours was a dark red. It was a good car for us. We had very few problems with it. We traded it in last September on the new '07 Buick LaCrosse we are driving now.
