Yeah, the Tuesday right after. MI passed a law back in 2005 that public schools in MI couldn't start until after Labor Day because it was hurting the tourism way too much to have an earlier start. When my girls were elementary school, we used to go back to school the 2nd week of August and didn't get out until the 3rd week of June!! People here hated it!!! Too short of a summer vacation for the kids and teachers, too many employers complaining about too many people trying to schedule vacations into that short time period, and the businesses really complained. Now we're back to the way summer vacations were when I was a kid in school.
When I was a kid we always went back after Labor Day too. I remember because I dreaded teh Labor Day telethon since I knew after it was over I was going to have to go to school.
At some point that changed though, because kids in WI go back before Labor Day now.
I always had that sense of dread too when the Telethon was on!
I don't know when MI changed the start time (August start) but I think it had been that way for a while. Isn't WI a big tourism state?? How does the earlier school start affect the businesses or haven't they said?
I think most of the tourism we get is in the northern part of the state. Milwaukee isn't a big tourist destination. So it probably doesn't affect us much.
Ah, ok. I think that was part of the reason for MI adopting a universal after Labor Day start too......each school district set their own starting dates and it really confused some people.
Beginning this school year, Saginaw County went to a universal Christmas and Spring break schedule too. All public schools in the county will be off at the same time. This had something to do with truancy.....kids would be out of school on different days and it made it hard to determine who should be in school and who shouldn't.
