Me, I'd want to set up a seed fund at COTA, so that every campaign starts out with a little money.
I'd also like to do something to help troubled teens, but it's just as likely I'd give more time to that (since I wouldn't need a job any more) than money.
I would give to charity, but probably not an organized one. Not unless I took the time to really learn about how they do what they do.
I'm not much for giving money to research of diseases like Cancer, Heart Disease, Diabetes, etc. I'm sure they're working very hard on cures, but it just seems like it's a never ending cause that we're constantly throwing money into the bucket for. I'll give $10 or $20 here or there, but that's it. Maybe we're not supposed to live to 100.
What I'd love to do is work with my church, and the other churches in my community to identify families in need and then help them anonymously.
We did that one year as a family and it felt really good to know that a family was going to have a Christmas dinner, and gifts for their kids, because of our donation.
It's not about wanting that good feeling for myself (although I do like it). but rather just knowing specifically who's being helped.
When I get settled in WI again I REALLY, REALLY want to be part of the meals on wheels program. They need drivers big time right now. I think that would be a neat way to give back. Taking meals to those that can't get out of the house for whatever reason.
i'd set up a utility fund to help the elderly; so many elderly people die from exposure every year because they have to choose between meds, fed and heat or a/c...
and the children's hospital... it breaks my heart to see the kids that are stricken with illness...

I am inclined to agree with JR. I would start my own foundation so I knew exactly where the money was going, who it was helping etc. I don't think these companies are eager to find a cure for cancer because then what would they scare you with to donate? Cancer cured does not make the money research does. I am not saying that right, but I hope you know what I mean.
Like JR, I wouldn't give to a big organized charity. I'd definitely give to our Underground Railroad....it's a shelter for abused women and their kids. I'd also give generously to our local soup kitchen....they never have enough food or money for the need in my community.
My company handles a couple of Meals On Wheels routes
Very cool! Sprint is really big into Harvester's. The company sponsors a food drive at least once a year. In addition to that, there is a group of us who get together once a month to pack sacked lunches for underprivileged children. All of the components of the lunches are donated by the employees.

I'd like to do something to help children, like the Make A Wish Foundation, but then again how much of that money would go into paying an executive's salary rather than getting a dying kid a ride on a dolphin's back? So I would probably go for COTA, because I know MzHartz knows that organization well & they help children.
I'd also give money to The Home of Aged Jazz DJs. As I am the "kid" heralding in the music for this generation; it'd be a nod to the greats of the past.

I meant that we drive the routes (2 or 3). I think the meals are already prepared to go. We volunteer. It's one of the things that our consumers (disabled adults) help out with. The staff are the drivers and give instructions but the consumers are supposed to help load up the van and give out the food.

The one I was looking into they would have me use my own vehicle, so I'm thinking it wouldn't involve that many meals. The area I was considering is a little more country-like so the rides to peoples homes might be longer than if I were volunteering in the city.
We have a local women's shelter that I would donate my money and time too, if I had it to give. I would also give money and time to my church since I know what they do with their money.
Yeah, with the COTA one, the money would go directly to the kids and families, the only thing the organization gets is the interest, and then they invest some of that to cover operating expenses. It's really a genius way to run a charity.
For any other one, I don't just want to throw money at something, I'd rather contribute my time as well.
