Anyone in the mood for a non-election political debate?

La. lawmaker wants to pay poor women to be sterilized

NEW ORLEANS, LA (NBC) - A suburban New Orleans legislator is wants to pay poor women to undergo sterilization.

State Rep. John LaBruzzo said that the program he is thinking about would be voluntary.

Poor women would be paid $1,000 to have their fallopian tubes tied.

LaBruzzo, a Republican, said the plan could slow the growth of welfare rolls.

But critics of this plan and similar ones proposed in the past  have long said the idea is racist.

Sheila Griffin, interim director of the New Orleans Women's Health Clinic, criticized the idea.

She said it targets poor black women and said better proposals to aid the poor would be to raise the minimum wage while improving education, labor laws and health care.

Really, I have little problem with this. It's voluntary, it's not like they're being forced into it, and it would save taxpayer money in the long run. I think there are just as many woman who have another child to get more welfare money as there are women who would jump at this chance.

It being voluntary I have to agree. It is your choice. If it goes against your beliefs then no one is making you do it. I'm not sure if it would help a lot though. It depends on how much those individuals think it out. They could have the $1,000 now but later on they would have to find other ways of getting money *gasp*

I think it's a great idea! I even know someone who could benefit from this. My boys have a half sister who is a baby machine. This girl is maybe 25 and just had her I believe 8th child, most of which she lost custody of. She has no job, is not married, of course has 3 different "baby daddys". Most of these have been what you would call high risk pregnancies that of course are paid for by Medicaid. Her third pregnancy actually got her on that show about high risk births. This girl needs to be stopped.

How about we just end welfare for pregnancy?

now THAT sounds like the most logical solution to me! we need to stop throwing money at these people to make life easier on them...

It would be nice if that were possible, but it's not reality. I also know women who have had babies while they were in disadvantaged circumstances and genuinely needed the help at the time, but that was it. Not all women take advantage... some do work hard to improve their situations and make better lives for themselves and their kids.

Rose, the boys's half sister, is the extreme. She should have been stopped long ago. Its not even that she wasn't given the option... she was after her third pregnancy. That was the one that got her on TV... twins. One was born hydrocephalic and passed away within a few days. In my opinion, since she is clearly incapable of caring for her children even with welfare, she should have had sterilization FORCED upon her.

That's what gets me.  When I was in college, I had no financial aid, my own apartment, and made minimum wage when I had a cancer scare.  I applied for medicaid and was denied.  The caseworker said if I was pregnant or had a kid that I would've got it.

I'd say as long as it's voluntary I'd be all for it.

Well, this isn't turning into much of a debate.

Kinda hard when everyone agrees for the most part. Guess I'm the lone radical who thinks there ought to be a limit before volunteer becomes volunTOLD.

No argument from me Mema- I think once is enough! Second kid while you are on welfare should automatically make you get at least a temporary tube tying!

I hope so, otherwise it would be pointless.

But I agree, I'd sign up.  The money would be nice, but to have the procedure for free would be benefit enough for me.

Having seen both extremes of that issue... one person in my life who had to go on welfare when she was pregnant, only had the one child while on assistance, and went on to have a very successful life... the other being Rose... seems to me logic should be applied to the situation. You can't automatically count a person out, but at some point you have to draw the line for the person who won't stop themselves.

That is why it would have to be a temporary thing- like the new one that last 5 years. Let them pay to have the procedure reversed. I, too, was a welfare mom when I had Zach. But I would have never thought about letting that happen again and I used the system to get me off of it. The daycare and financial aid was just enough for me to get my education and pay taxes and move on!
