The Insiders Guide To Your Town

Hey!

What advice would you give visitors who asked you for info if they were visiting your town?

In Milwaukee, if you wanted to see a concert or Bucks game at the Bradley Center,
park on 12th Street just south of State Street, by the Police Department. Free Parking after 7 pm, and you won't get stuck in line trying to get out of the Parking Structure, where you'll pay $10-25 to park in the first place. Also, you can park on 8th and Juneau, and its a real short walk down to 4th street entrance.

Instead of trying to do the Jazz in the Park thing on thursdays, which is way too crowded, try River Rhythms on Wednesday. Much more chill. smile

Visit Bloomington during the summer when the students are away. If you must visit while school is in, whatever you do, stay away if there's a football game.

no longer my town but if heading to Grand Blanc, MI and not for the Buick Open- stay away from downtown while the Buick Open is there. It is nothing but chaos!!

Anytown in Michigan- well at least Holly, Grand Blanc and Fenton
be extremely aware when you are turning at an intersection that has more than one lane that can turn right. The people in the car next to you will always think you can't turn that way and either turn wide and almost take you out or they will cut you off because the want to turn left after this turn. no.gif

FOr the best corned beef in town, don't go to Jakes. Bad hours and an even worse neighborhood. Go to McBobs. The service is extremely slow, so if you go, plan on drinking and being there awhile. Unless you order ahead and get it to go.

If you plan on attending a concert or ballgame at Miller Park, but don't want to pay for their parking, don't try and do streets near the park. they fill up way early. Go to one of the bars a bit further away- Saz or Obriens, and for the price of a mug of beer, you can ride their shuttles in.

Do not go to the Halo Burger in Grand Blanc! It is gross! It was the only time I've ever had Halo Burger. Other people say they love Halo Burger but that particular one IS nasty. I have not had the courage to try a different one.

Go to Snowfest in Frankenmuth if the weather is cold and there is snow on the ground. It is supposed to be cold so you can buy the hot chocolate and you can warm up in the beer tent. Do not waste your time if it is rainy and muddy. Snow and ice sculptures will be melting and breaking around you. Not to mention that they change in weather brings EVERYONE out and it just becomes a very bad experience!

Everyone goes to Brown County to see the tree and hills when the leaves change color in the fall. Here's a newsflash, ALL the trees in this area change color! Avoid the crowds and go to Monroe Lake or Morgan/Monroe forest instead.

Also, Stepp Cemetery is located in Morgan/Monroe forest. If you want to visit the cemetery when it's not a tourist destination, don't go around Halloween.

If you are sight seeing in KC ... yes there are some sights to see... under no circumstances should you actually go to Liberty Memorial at night. The crowd there changes to something entirely different in the evenings.

If you want to see them turn on the Christmas lights at the Country Club Plaza on Thanksgiving night... GO EARLY and bring our patience. It's always crowded, but it's pretty cool. Or just watch it on TV. It's frequently shown in the montage of Christmas Light events on the national news.

I-435 goes around or through most of the Greater KC area. If you are lost, find your way back to I-435 and keep driving until something looks familiar. At worst, you will be back where you started within about 2.5 hours.

Give old people and farmers plenty of room when driving down town. Don't trust their turn signals (or lack of one) and don't trust that they will obey any traffic signals or laws.

Every year, the chamber of commerce puts on a free pit bar-b-que at the fair. It starts at 5:30 and goes until 7:00.

If you want to go, wait until about 6:15-6:30. They always have enough food and you will be able to walk right up and go through the line because everyone else is afraid they might miss out on the free food so they all get there at 5:30.

That reminds me, Web.... if it has a MO license plate, assume it can't drive. If it has a KS license plate, don't expect or trust a turn signal. We don't like to tip you off to what we are thinking.

If you come to Saginaw, don't waste your time with the downtown area.  There's nothing left there to see or do.  Instead head out Bay Rd.; it's where all the shopping centers, restaurants, and movie theaters are.  If you crave some cool places for night life, head down to Hamilton Street where you'll find lots of friendly nightclubs featuring a wide variety of music every night of the week.  Be sure to visit the Temple Theatre; they recently rejuvenated it and brought it back to the splendor it once was...absolutely gorgeous inside.  And if you come here on the third Saturday of June and love country music, there is a free Country concert every year featuring some top names in the business on Ojibway Island.  Get there early though as it draws over 200,000 people.  No cars are allowed on the Island during events, but there is plenty of free parking available off-site within walking distance.

Oh, in Bloomington you don't have to worry, all the other drivers are lost too. Most people here drive like they don't know where they're going, and most streets have multiple names.

Speaking of, if you've been given directions, get landmarks. Just because they told you to turn on one street and the street you're on has a different name, it doesn't mean you're on the wrong street.

Kirkwood leads out from the Sample Gates, and is located between 4th and 6th. Going west, Kirkwood turns into 5th, and then into W. 3rd. Yup.

Grimes changes to Patterson one block west of S. Walnut, and leads to W. 3rd (you know, the one that was 5th).

Going from West to East, Tapp Rd. turns into Country Club Dr., which turns into Winslow Rd., which turns into Rogers Rd. Don't get Rogers Rd. confused with Rogers St.

I live on E. Miller Dr. There is no W. Miller Dr. Rogers Rd. is actually E. Rogers Rd. There's no W. Rogers Rd. either.

We have that same condition going on here in the town where Pambo and I live. Not far from my house, Nelson Road turns into Church Street. The actual street I live on is a loop that runs through 3 housing developements. Part of it is called Church Street (no connection to the other Church Street, part is Elizabeth Street, part of it is Layton Drive, part of it is Nelson Circle. hmm.gif There are at least 2 separate and distinct S. Willow Drives within about a mile of each other... I used to live on one of them.

Oh, one other thing.  If you're heading to Saginaw, once you're on I-675 north, make sure you don't get off until the Tittabawassee exit, which is the last one.  All the other exits take you into the really bad part of town; believe me, you don't want to be in those areas even during the day time.  We're called Sagnasty for a reason.  hmmcry

OOO... one valuable tip I did get before visiting Detroit : Be aware of "The Michigan Left Turn". Never heard of such a critter until I was trying to find my sister's house. The instructions came with "at the intersection, turn right on 8-Mile, then take your 2nd Michigan Left."

What??  There are 2 Michigan Avenues in Detroit??  laughing.gif  Tells you how often I get to Detroit.

But we do have something on road rules that I don't know if other states have or not.  At a red light, if you are turning left on to a one-way street, you are allowed to turn left on the red as long as there is no oncoming traffic.

We can only do that if both streets are one way.

Now that is COOL! Totally illegal in Kansas... unless of course there isn't a police officer around. giggle.gif

I think here too, turning left on red can only be if both are one-ways.

Our's doesn't have to be both one-ways; only the street you're turning left on to does.

Sometimes I like to tick people off and not make the left until the light changes.  Just because the law says I can doesn't mean I'm gonna.  laughing.gif  biggrin
