Milwaukee Public Schools roll on

No disolving of the public school system.

The budget was approved with a 14.6% tax levy increase, the maximum allowed under state law.  Every single year except one (last year when they held it to 9% after a public outcry) they've voted to increase the budget and taxes by the maximum allowed under state law.

Their reasoning for going for the max?  They stand to lose 5 million in Federal Aid if they don't.  Interesting thinking huh?  We HAVE to increase your taxes by double digits or we wont' get that big windfall of free federal money, which by the way, comes from your federal taxes.

Who on earth is the mathematical genius behind the concept of annual 15% increases in taxes while the average American's income increases 2 - 3% each year?  How long do they think that can continue until their entire system comes crashing down?

They just close their damn eyes and say to themselves "let's just screw the pooch one more time and worry about next year NEXT year".

Sickening.

All this for a school system that sucks anyway!

I'll bet the companies that aren't cutting people will most certainly freeze wages as well.....

I heard one talking head for MPS say...and this is almost a direct quote...

"Not getting this icrease would have set our public schools back a decade if we had to cut the budget by 14%."

Correct me if I am wrong but if one year of downsizing means a decade of setbacks...the planning and logistics are ineffective to begn with.

If kids want to learn, they will learn. Period.  Emphasize the basics.  Get the best teachers you can.  With a budget.  Throwing tons of money after problems never solves problems.  People solve problems.  This school system has been in crisis for at least a decade.  Private school vouchers would be a better use of my tax dollars.  If a kid doesnt show responsibility with his allowance...increasing his allowance is not the answer.

Seems to me that the Charter School System would probably be a better answer that the public schools are. The Kansas City, Missouri, school district was one of the worst in the mid-west until someone decided to implement the Charter Schools. I would not call it the envy of the local school districts now, but it is way better than it used to be.

There are some privately ran charter schools in milwaukee, but thats usually a problem in itself. ran in like sheds, mayhem, people only putting on a facade and taking the money...
