In the news today...

...troubled New York Giants football player Plaxico Burress was arrested over the holiday weekend after shooting himself in the foot.

Faced with gun possession charges Burress intends to plead NOT GUILTY!  weirdface.gif

I don't understand.  Is he going to try to convince the jury he manually inserted the bullet into his foot?

His lawyer Mr. Brafman said He is standing tall. He is a mature adult.  Seriously?  This is maturity?  A gaping wound in your foot, a casing from your gun, and you insisting you aren't guilty of possessing said gun?!?!

Sometimes the news just make you say hmmm............

This is true. I suppose a superhero like Plaxico is capable of throwing a bullet straight through his foot.

I feel silly now for questioning him. hmm.gif

Did you see the article I posted from Fail blog with the vicar? Similar thing. Except it was a potato instead of a bullet. And it wasn't his foot.

Yeah, so possession is hard to argue unless there was someone else around who might cop to shooting him in the foot. Still... whatever the circumstances, I wonder if he maybe just decided to end his football career. I wonder what kind of damage he just did himself? Kind of hard to run if you are missing part of your foot. hmm.gif

Probably something like that. There are only so many reasons to shoot one's own self. Most likely causes are drugs, alcohol, or mental illness.

He is a talented football player. It would be a real shame if he did do this on purpose to sabotage his career. I certainly hope that isn't the case. If it is, dude needs some serious help. There really isn't enough info to tell if that is the case.

You will have to pardon me a bit if I come off unsympathetic. I've had to deal with the gun weilding mentally ill before. My view of things is a bit skewed on that subject. Unless one is flat out delusional, then one does know when one is not acting right. One can elect to get some help. I have a hard time feeling sorry for someone who knows they aren't right and just refuse to do anything about it.

I had heard this the other day (we are a little closer, plus we hate the Giants). The original story was he was out at a nightclub and shot himself in the thigh. Dumbass. I still wonder how someone shoots themselves. And I agree, exactly how do you plead not guilty. I supposed it depends what the charges are. But still, carrying a concealed weapon or illegal discharge are charges you kind of can't get away from when you are holding the smoking gun.

It's just standard business to plead "not guilty". Could be a simple case of stupidity or gross negligence. More than one nimrod has shot themselves being Joe Cool and sticking a loaded gun down their pants.

Just because it is loaded though doesn't mean there needs to be a round in the chamber. He was probably being stupid, showing off or someone was giving him a hard time. I am okay with it though, the Eagles play the Giants this Sunday. That will give them one fewer weapon.

True... but you do get to put that one more bullet in the clip if you have one on hand in the chamber already. smile.gif At least he shot himself instead of some innocent bystander. But really... you got the money... hire a body guard. SHEESH!

Plaxico Burress arrived at a police station early Monday, where he was expected to be charged after accidentally shooting himself in the right thigh at a Manhattan nightclub.

ONE GIANT MESS
Plaxico BurressGiants WR Plaxico Burress shot himself in the leg at a Manhattan nightclub on Friday. Catch up on the latest details.

The New York Giants star wide receiver arrived in a black Cadillac Escalade wearing jeans and a black coat. Burress, who was not visibly limping, did not speak to the media.

Burress plans to plead not guilty to a weapon possession charge during a Monday afternoon court appearance, his lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, said outside the police station. Conviction on the charge could result in at least 3 1/2 years in prison.

"He is standing tall. He is a mature adult," said Brafman. "I think any professional athlete in this situation would be concerned."

Brafman refused to respond to media reports about an alleged coverup, other than to say: "I think a lot of what's been in the press is not accurate."

He said Burress is feeling OK. "If they let him play, he will be able to play. ... I think he will be a superstar for the rest of his career."

"My hope is that it plays out well and he can continue his career, because he's a good person I think, with a brilliant athletic career. And it would be a terrible sadness if an isolated incident could ruin a life," Brafman said.

The NFL is monitoring the case.

"This is a law enforcement matter and we are continuing to cooperate fully with the police," league spokesman Greg Aiello said in a statement. "In addition, it will be reviewed under our league policies."

Brafman met with Burress for bout an hour Sunday at the player's home in New Jersey.

"I would ask that his fans, the Giants and the media withhold judgment in this matter until all of the facts have been disclosed," Brafman said earlier in an e-mail to The Associated Press.

Brafman is a well-known criminal lawyer who has defended mobsters and other high-profile figures, including hip-hop impresario Sean "Diddy" Combs on a bribery and gun possession charge in 2001.

Burress shot himself Friday and was released from a hospital early Saturday, the Giants said.

"As far as we know, he's going to be OK," general manager Jerry Reese said Sunday before the Super Bowl champions' 23-7 victory at the Washington Redskins.

Giants running back Brandon Jacobs said he spoke to Burress on the phone after the game.

"I called him and made a few jokes about the situation and his laugh is what I wanted to hear," Jacobs said, according to Newsday. "If he didn't laugh I knew he was going to be down, which he shouldn't be down. It's a mistake that happened, something that shouldn't have happened and that's that."

Before the shooting, Burress already had been ruled out of the game because of a leg injury.

New York police and NFL security are investigating what happened Friday. Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce was interviewed by NFL security at the team's hotel Saturday, Reese said.

Pierce who started against Washington reportedly was present for the latest dramatic turn in a tumultuous season of fines and suspension for Burress.
