Reality TV Should It Come To An End?

I thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread when Survivor first came on. But now they are doing shows on are you my daddy?

When will it ever end!

I definately would like to see it end.

I think there will always be 3, 4 or 5 reality shows on the schedule for the rest of our lives.  The genre won't completely disappear.  But enough is enough already.

I love Survivor and I watch Big Brother, but I really don't care for a lot of it.  I don't watch the Bachelor or Bachelorette and stuff like that.  I'm just not interested.  I just choose not to watch them.  Am I missing out?    I don't think so.

I don't get it....Reality Shows have ALWAYS been around....they have just gone by a different name....GAME SHOWS.....thinks about it, except for Jeopardy & Wheel of fortune, can you name another nationally televised game show....

no....because the genre has morphed into reality shows...instead of going to a set to win prizes, you go on location to win cash or a date or a daddy....

Now reality shows like Newlyweds & AnnaNicole Show are a morph of a different type of show...Lifestyles of the rich & Famous....but instead of just 1 episode per show...the celeb gets the whole season....

It's nothing new with reality shows...it's just that someone created the slang term...& now EVERY unscripted show becomes reality tv....

I'd have to disagree with you Mo (and you KNOW how I HATE to disagree with you).

But the real "reality" show idea started a long time ago with MTV's REAL WORLD, and "caught on" about 7 or 8 years later.

Game shows aren't reality shows.  I mean, by that definition you could say all sports broadcasts are reality shows.  Just being "real" doesn't make it a reality show.  I think the term reality show is used for a smaller category of television.

For example, I don't think American Idol or The Apprentice, or maybe even Survivor is a reality show, although they always get lumped into the category.

I think of reality shows as shows that try to recreate a reality with the camera's around, and give us the feeling we're watching someone who doesn't know they're being watched.

I would also bunch in the shows like the Bachelor or Who Wants To Marry A Millionaire because we're watching someone who doesn't know they're being misled, thus we see the reality and the subject see's the lie they're being fed.

If I were the producer of the Apprentice or Idol or Survivor I would not want my show called a reality show.  It's a contest (or as Trump says, a 16 week job interview).

But see definitions of terms are so loose in all genres....

You brought up Sports...I was about to say that sports shouldn't be considered reality because of the nature of sports....Competition between 2 or more sides to decide a winner....but after typing that, that could describe ALOT of what is considered reality TV.... So to make it more specific....It must be a physical activity too...damn...would call fear factor a sport but it still fits, And Nascar is a sport, but the machine does most of the work....OK Must be afilliated with a city too.....well golf & tennis aren't afilliated w/ cities, so scrap that part....

So typing here I realized that you really can't define what sport is, because there are always a bunch of exceptions and variations....

and that's the same thing reality TV is....you can't really call it this, because other other shows don't follow the same criteria & are still reality.....

For another thing...using your definition of reality TV, could'nt you call these shows serial documentaries...cuz they use a camera to follow people around as if it isn't there.....

And if there has to be a story behind it...people have been doing improvization for years, which again would fit in the idea of Reality TV.....

I don't think it really has a well defined...um...er...definition....and as long as that is true, I think reality is here to stay....

Well, following YOUR definition I would have to agree, it's here to stay.

Under my definition (and you may not know this, but Websters often defers to me on these things) I would say the genre will eventually fade away, but not completely disappear.

The important thing is that the REALLY scummy shows are starting to fail from the get-go.  WHO'S YOUR DADDY only aired once before they pulled the show realizing they'd gone too far.

Hopefully we'll see more of that in the future.

I still get annoyed when I see bus placards here in Milwaukee with a babys face and the words "Who's Your Daddy?" then underneath is an address and phone number for paternity testing.  HOW FAR WE'VE CRUMBLED AS A SOCIETY.  Can you IMAGINE something like that in the 50's?  I shudder to think what our society will look like come 2055.  Luckily I probably won't be here to see it.
