ARMAGEDDON IS NEAR! Ghost will like George Bush and I will not!

Bush is now talking about having the White House do something to help the automakers.

After all this time of saying he wasn't inclined to do anything he apparantly has changed his mind and is considering shaving off some of the financial bailout money to go to the automakers.

After Congress spent ALL THIS TIME debating the issue and a group of ELECTED OFFICIALS did their job and determined there was NOT ENOUGH SUPPORT for an automaker bailout.  George Bush is now considering just doing it anyway.

I'm NOT HAPPY with George W. Bush at the moment.

But Ghost should be ready to give him a big wet sloppy kiss biggrin.gif  Maybe now she'll even vote for Jeb in 2012 wink.gif

I suppose if there's anything good about this it's the fact the money would come from the previous mistake Congress made.  At least it's not additional money being handed out.

what'd they say- this bailout would only float them until the summer months anyhow? so we just delay failure?

That's what I don't get. There is no expectation that we can keep them alive, it's like we're just afraid to make the hard decisions.

I commend Congress for REALLY digging into this and demanding some difficult concessions from both the automakers and the union. I wonder if the White House aid will be no strings attached so the CEO's can still keep making outrageous money.

The sad truth is I think there's no room for three big automakers in the country right now. The sickest of the three needs to be allowed to die or it's just going to drag them all down.

YEAH! EXACTLY!

WHAT THE HELL!!!!

This is what the Republican party is SUPPOSED TO BE ALL ABOUT! FREE MARKETS!!!

Let em' succeed or die on their own merit dammit!!!

"Oh man, you guys are screwed up! You actually LOSE money on every car sold? REALLY?!?! Well you better let us give you some spending cash then because at that rate you're not gonna be in business very long".

I'll say it again. WHAT THE HELL!!!!!!!!

And what in the world did you let Congress waste all that time for, go through the process of democracy for, if you're just gonna give em' the money anyway!

Bush has done plenty of things I didn't agree with while in office (and plenty that I did), but this one definitely goes in the disagreed with file.

Maybe if you call and speak with him, he will understand. And while you are at it, tellhim it was a stupid move bailing out those other companies.

I've been asked to stop calling the White House ashamed

(actually, I beleive the exact terminology was "Please cease and desist all future communications or face a severe beating at the hands of some testy secret service agents")

I think perhaps W just doesn't want GM folding and 3 Million people out of jobs to be his swan song. If he can keep them afloat until after January 20, then it doesn't go on his record.

I thought the three of them could survive until the end of January. That wouldn't be his problem then. I still think if they would have done all this investigative and probing work for the other bailouts too, they wouldn't look like a bad guy for not helping the automakers.

GM and Chrysler say that they may have to shut their doors at the end of this month if they don't get help. If that is the case, then $15 billion will be like throwing an eyedropper worth of water at a raging forest fire.

Just heard that GM announced that they are going to shut 21 plants for the month of January.

This is a good article on the bailout at CNN.com. Essentially the columnist seems to think they don;t deserve a bailout, and that they will still fail eventually anyway, but this is the best way to conduct a 'jobs program' until Obama's other programs kick in and the economy can better withstand the big 3 going under....

JR, this still isn't enough to make me vote a red ticket. winkbiggrin

I'm still really worried about Michigan's economy though.  Granted it's hard times all over the place, but as I've said before, MI is the auto capital and we're going to take some devastating hits on job losses if the Big 3 can't survive.  I just hope the Feds are prepared for the astronomical amount of people that stand to lose their jobs....not just in the auto industry but also from all the other businesses that will be affected.

Dow Chemical announced the other day they are laying off 5,000 people.  Their headquarters are in Midland (about 15-20 miles from Saginaw) and have already said there will be a lot of jobs lost here.

Yeah, I know MI is one of the worst spots in the country right now. hmm.gif

Won't be long and you'll be dealing with riots.

where was the american auto industry BEFORE they heard the gubment be handing out free money? I heard no threats of inevitable doom (well besides GM) before the gubment be handing out money. its the like auto bailout is deflecting attention away from the bank bailout.

I noticed today at my bank that the giftcards for stores have been replaced with use anywhere prepaid credit cards instead.....

Our banks have only carried the pre-paid credit cards....Visa gift cards.  I've never seen retail store gift cards at any of the banks.

And yeah JD you're right.  The auto industry bailout is taking attention away from the banking bailouts.  I laughed out loud when they proposed a "car czar" to oversee the car manufacturers if they get any money.  Where is the "bank czar" to oversee bailouts for the banks??  confuse

Back about 1990, Larry Burkett of "Christian Financial Concepts" (now "Crown Ministries") predicted this collapse. Its interesting how closely it is going down exactly as he predicted. He thought it would happen about 2000, so we lasted longer than he thought, but it looks like its happening now. Larry died of cancer about 7 years ago.

No, Larry didn't claim to be some kind of prophet or anything like that. He was basing his thoughts off the simple fact that the entire country can't continue to run on credit without it eventually failing. He said it would start small, but once the trickle got going, it would continue to spiral down until it became a full avalanche by the time it hit bottom. I wonder where the bottom will be.

For years Larry preached getting out of debt, living within your means, and trying to build up AT LEAST six months of living costs into savings to prepare for this. One of his points was that with a government as bad off with debt as most of us are as individuals, we shouldn't be counting on the government to be able to fix this when it happened.

I remember listening to his warnings and thinking to myself: "Ah, It can't ever get that bad, can it?"

He also stressed the point that throwing more money at a symptom will not solve the problem. You have to fix the root cause that got you to where you are in the first place. Once that problem is fixed, then you can use the pay-off money and start over under a different way of doing things. If you don't solve the real problem first, you're only digging the hole deeper and will only make the real problem worse.

I have a hard time that they are asking the autoworkers to take a cut in pay, but yet they are all slotted to get a 4000 dollar raise next year. And I am not saying the the workers should not take a cut, less is better than none. But I think it is sickening that ANY politician would take an increase in pay at this time.

The UAW president was on the news this morning saying that according to the financials, all of the UAW could work for free for a month and it wouldn't make a difference to the companies. hmm.gif It's probably true.
