You missed a really pretty one the other night, Ghost. From my perspective, it even went mostly behind a wall of clouds for a bit, but was visible as orange stripes through the clouds. MAN even that was beautiful. I wished I would have had my digital camera and wouldn't have been driving at the time.

You guys have been getting it pretty bad lately. We don't get near the snowfall in Kansas that you do, but we have our own special winter treat... ice storms. We are supposed to have freezing rain overnight tonight followed by snow on Tuesday.

We get our share of freezing rain in February and March. My dad was up to his place this weekend. He has a place about 75 miles north of where I live. Anyway he said there is over 3 feet of snow on the ground. He had to go down to a farmer he knows and ask him to come with his big equipment to plow out the driveway just so he could get in. Before he came home, he headed a little further north and west and swung by our cabin....he said there's no way we're gonna get in without having someone with heavy duty equipment plow for us. They've had a lot of snow up there during the past 2 weeks. My dad said it was close to 5 ft at our place! Unbelievable for this early in winter.

That is just crazy! I think so far we have maybe had one inch, if even that. I looked out side just a bit ago and there is ice and snow out there now. The streets look frozen, but the grass isn't completely covered. I bet it will be an ice rink on the way in to the office tomorrow.

Does your state have snow removal equipment and salt for the roads? Just wondering, cuz a lot of them that don't get a lot of snow usually don't have the means to deal with it.

We have both. As a general rule, we do get snow every year, just not near the quantities that you see up north. Our snow / ice dealing with budget is nothing like what you must have. This year they are starting testing a new thing... beet juice as an ice melt. Supposedly it is as effective as salt, but better for the environment and cheaper. Sounds to me like I will just have a purple truck from the yucky roads.

I bought a snow blower years ago at the behest of the wuzband. He's notoriously lazy, but that turned out to be one of the better investments I made in his sloth. It came in real handy last year. Have yet to haul it out this year, but I have a feeling its time is coming soon.

Beet juice??? Wow, never heard of that before. Hope it doesn't permanently stain your vehicle. Here they plow and use salt.....lots and lots of salt. And when that runs out, they switch over to sand. Doesn't melt the ice but provides traction, or so they say. If they put down enough of it, yeah you'd get traction....but they never put enough down.

Last winter they ran out of both salt and sand by the middle of January. What a nightmare that was!!

I'm pretty sure it is beet juice they are supposed to be using in some cities around here. Typically it is salt or sand. At home I use a combination of potassium chloride (ice melt) and cheap kitty litter. The kitty litter is almost as good as the potassium chloride, but it is easier on the concrete.

Mema, we must be near the same lattitude, we've got the same thing here. We get more snow than ice in winter.

They used to just use sand, which was a nightmare. A few years ago, they switched back to salt, thank goodness. I wouldn't be surprised if the beet juice works they'll be using it here.

back in highschool and early college I worked in a hardware store where one side of the street was in milwaukee, which was treated with salt, and the other side of the street was wauwatosa, and was treated with sand.

It was always funny to see the contrast in quality, the speed difference of cars heading in opposite directions, and slidiness all on the same street.

It really was a beautiful moon. I always enjoy moonbeams streaming through the trees and around the yard. And it takes on a different look when you get a full moon and subsequent moonbeams bouncing off the snow.
