Woman Sues Sac State Over Homecoming Queen Bid Reporting Elyce Kirchner SACRAMENTO (CBS13)
A student who ran for homecoming queen at Sacramento State University and didn't win says she scored the most points and still didn't come out on top. Now, she is suing the university.
Sandra Howery is used to going against the odds.
"I ended up having a lot of back surgeries, so it's taken me 28 years to get my bachelor's degree," says Sandra.
After 10 surgeries, the 46-year-old Sacramento State student walks slower, but still excels in the classroom.
"So much of what Sac State talks about is the diversity here, so I decided to go for it," said Sandra.
But in September, she lost her bid to be homecoming queen, and has decided to sue.
"I am not a sore loser; it's just the principle of everything," says Sandra.
Sandra claims student affairs made it seem like if she got the most donations she could win.
"I knew that I donated a lot more than everybody else; I had over 1,400 points for donations," said Sandra.
Sac State refused to speak to CBS13, but released this statement:
"We have taken Ms. Howery's concerns seriously and participated in a thorough review of our contest procedures."
But Cassy Hughes, a friend of the winner, says it's more involved than just donations.
"Your GPA, I believe there's an interview, your essay, your clubs and activities you're involved in are going to get more points," says Cassy.
Right or wrong, the 46-year-old believes losing the crown comes down to one thing: "I would have thought I would have been an embarrassment," says Sandra.
She's really trying to say this is about the principle of the thing? Bravo for her for persevering with her physical limitations, but seriously... sounds to me like she is looking for a storybook ending.

That which does not kill me postpones the inevitable.
Even if she did "win" by points, I have to ask how many people want a 46 year old as homecoming queen? Yes, a bit discriminatory, but don't you think that is how a back room conversation could have gone?
