Shanahan Fired

DENVER (AP) -- Mike Shanahan has been fired as Denver Broncos coach after the team lost a three-game lead with three games to go in the AFC West.

Shanahan, 56, coached the Broncos since 1995, the second-longest tenure for a coach with one NFL team behind Tennessee's Jeff Fisher. He coached the Broncos to consecutive Super Bowl victories in 1998 and 1999 and compiled a record of 146-89 with the team.

This season, the Broncos had an 8-5 record but lost their final three, including a 52-21 defeat Sunday night in San Diego that gave the Chargers the division title.

He also was dismissed as director of football operations.

Get out and stay out!smile.gif

Actually I was hoping Ted Thomspson and Mike McCarthy could make the move to Detroit.

Both men are such astute judges of talent, I'm sure they could turn around Detroit in no time.  Just look what they did here, 13 - 3 to 6 - 10 in only ONE season!!!  clap.gif

I agree Web.  They had a relatively young team this year that were still cutting their teeth, but look out next year!  Nebraska will be a force to be reckoned with.  nod.gifbiggrin

Yeah, but that's like saying juniors soccer team is gonna be really good this year, when we all know they don't even keep score.

It's COLLEGE. It just doesn't matter no.gif

Yup, a new coach's first year. He'll get to do his own recruiting this winter/spring.

"Real" football.

Pfffffffffffffffffft.

You mean the alternative to "Professional . . . as in wrestling".

Hey web, our kicker went for the longest field goal in NFL history. 69 yards into the wind! He missed by about 2 or 3 yards. He had the aim, but the distance fell just short.

I thought of you when he was trying for it! smile.gif

None of that "I'm gonna retire, no I'm not, yes I am, no I'm not . . . I'm taking my ball and moving silliness". Its about THE GAME.

You remember the game . . . don't you?

BAH!

You have to say stuff like that because you haven't had a professional football team in your state in about a decade.

If the Lions were playoff contenders and had been to the big dance once or twice in recent memory you'd be singing another tune.

He missed another one huh?

Our Husker kicker kicked a school record setting field goal . . . and made it.

A young kid with a love for the game making a kick like that . . . THAT was exciting!

A "pro" who's paid to kick field goals missing another one . . . not so much.

"should I go pro and cash in on the big bucks?  Should I stay in college one more year and hope it's a weaker draft next year?"

Same questions, different words.

What was the previous school record, about 17 yards?  blankstare.gif

Yes he did, and that WAS a thing of beauty to watch!!!! nod.gifsmile

JR, I'd still feel the same way even if the Lions won the Superbowl.  I'd much rather watch a college team play than a pro team any day.  Nebraksa and MSU are my teams.  smile

Hey, JR . . . maybe some day we can go to a nice quiet baseball game and discuss this over a long game of monopoly.

I don't like college football at all.

BUT I do like Minor League Baseball, and it's the same concept. Young guys, playing for the love of the game, busting their humps in the hopes of one day being a pro athlete.

If only you'd have been exposed to some major league baseball as a child maybe you wouldn't have this silly obsession with college football today.  no.gif

Poor guy.

I think it was 57 yards.

He's such a scrawny kid, but he can put his foot in that ball. nod.gif

I was exposed to major league baseball and find it as exciting as watching corn grow or paint drying. blankstare  Hated it back then and still do now.
