A spot of good news (special thanks to Woo and Ghost)

From the Journal-Sentinal

Milwaukee killings fall
to 23-year low

10:28 p.m. | The 71 homicides in 2008 in Milwaukee represent the fewest killings in the city since 1985, a decrease officials attributed in part to improved cooperation among law enforcement agencies and policing focused on the most violent neighborhoods.

-----------------

I think a big part of it is the new police chief we got from Michigan.  He's really cracked down on crime and gang activity.  When he first got here he stood on a Milwaukee street in front of all the news cameras and declared the gangs were no longer going to control Milwaukee streets.

Since then there have been some HUGE mass arrests of gang members and I think it's really starting to work.

Excellent news... always good to hear crime going down instead of up.

The town next to mine in the listed as like 10th worse in the nation. They have a new leader too, but he is having a hard time, especially now with the job market and the economy.

I'm very fortunate where I live. I don't know about the city as a whole, but there is virtually no crime in my neighborhood. The city I live in happens to be the county seat, so we have presence from city, county, and state law enforcement. Our city police alone have every law enforcement and safety ammenity that you would find in a major city. Additionally, there is a National Guard Armoury and because we have a lot of immigrants of questionable legality, we have lots of ICE presence too. Within a tenth of a mile of my house, are the homes of two city policemen and one county deputy sherrif.

My city just bought some kind of fancy equipment to tell them which direction gunshots are coming from.  It supposedly gets mounted on top of streetlight posts or telephone poles and can pinpoint the direction a shot comes from.  I don't know how it's going to help deter shootings or gang activity though.  The police are still gonna need an eyewitness (which very seldom happens here) or they're going to have to be in the immediate vicinity when shootings take place.

Our latest high-tech gadget is some $40K a pop device where the officer swipes your driver's license and it fills out all of your pertinents on the ticket you are about to get. All the officer has to do is input the variables and you basically get a receipt like ticket.

Yeah, we really need stuff like that Ruby.  We have a horrible gang problem here and it's spreading like wildfire throughout the city.  My dad is surrounded by gangbangers in his neighborhood, and they're getting closer to where I live too.  The number of gang shootings has decreased during the past couple of years, but we still have an awful lot of 'em.

When they're in your 'hood, they own the 'hood.  It's awful that my city has declined the way it has.  There are a lot of areas I no longer go into for any reason.  I go visit my dad, and I'm dodging 'bangers walking down the middle of the street when I'm driving....they refuse to use the sidewalks and act like the streets belong to them.  I guess in a way they do.  It makes me angry at them though when I'm driving along and they just plain out and out refuse to move over and then give you that steely eyed stare.

That would be very tempting to acquire a new hood ornament. hmm.gif Most of the banger looking people in my area are very bored rich kids. The police do a really good job of keeping that stuff under control around here.
