If this were the first time this had happened maybe I wouldn't be so upset, but it's not the first time. It's the THIRD time in about a year and a half.
In West Allis they've got various parking restrictions every night, and if you want to park on the street at all over night you have to buy a parking permit. It's about $15 a month or you can buy a yearly one for about $120.00
Being the frugal guy I am I always buy the annual one to save money.
Well, THREE times now, with the last one occuring over the weekend, some lazy a** cop has written me a ticket for not having a current parking permit.
The reason I've been given in the past is that they are looking for the monthly colored sticker (every month it's a different color) so when they see my annual sticker they just think "Oh, that's not this months color it must be an old one". Of course, they could take the 3 seconds it would take to READ the sticker and see it's for the whole year. Or MAYBE they could remember the fact that there EXISTS an annual sticker and be looking for it.
But nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...
It's cold outside, so they sit in the comfort of their warm cruiser and write a ticket, having only glanced with a flashlight at the sticker to look for a color.
Now if they allowed you to CALL and take care of this it MIGHT not p*ss me off so much. BUT THEY DON'T.
It's MY responsibility to waste my time driving to the far end of West Allis, stand in line for 15 or 20 minutes and then give them a tour of my vehicle so they can see for themselves the permit is there. Otherwise I can just pay the $20 ticket.
This is the type of thing that makes me so mad I could scream. Why is my time and gas meaningless? Why do I have to correct the mistake of a PAID officer?!?!
Again. Once, FINE. Everyone's human, everyone makes mistakes. But this has happened to me three times in a little over a year. I DOUBT I'm the only one in the city of West Allis that goes through it.
WTF!!!
Ok, rants over. But this time I'll be putting much of it in a letter to the mayor.
They'll allow you to call in a car for up to five days a month I believe, so if someone visits they can call the police department every night and get approval to leave the car on the street without a permit.
Of course, that's no guarantee the cop will actually check the list. You might be right behind me in line at the station the next day
talk to your alderman. we were getting screwed in milwaukee over by my place. a bunch of folks called the alderman, a parking rule was changed, and its been honky dorie ever since.

I'd be tempted to make up a sticker in the same color and looks like the monthly sticker that says, "Hey, look above me, I have an annual sticker!" Then at the very least they might mistake that for the regular monthly sticker.
I actually WAS seriously considering going to the office depot store and getting some white vinyl. I was gonna put a big box around the permit with an arrow pointing to it and the word PERMIT!!!
I STILL may do that. Just to make my point to the idiot cop. Of course, then he'll be REALLY watching my car.
You mean you can park in the streets all night there? If it's not already posted "No Parking" here, you have to have your car off the street between the hours of 2:00 and 6:00 a.m. Almost all of our main streets are posted "no parking at any time", but it's usually legal to park on the side streets so long as the car is gone by 2:00 in the morning.
