What albums did your parents play...

when you were on a long trip that you loved or hated?

My dad used to have this tape called Cruisin' 1961 with Arnie Ginsburg from WMEX from Boston.  I loved it.  It had old music on it and his actual broadcasts.  It was so awesome to listen to.  This subject came to mind because I just found it online and bought it for him.  I can't wait to see his face when he gets it.

My Dad was old style country, and my Mom was old time rock & roll so we always had a mixture of everything. First we would listen to Bob Wills, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, then we would listen to Elvis, Del Shannon, Johnny Rivers Bill Haley & The Comets.... I guess thats why I like all types of music. I had alot of the cruisin tapes my self except the DJ was Gary Owens, (the guy from Laugh-In).

I also remember him really wearing out his LP of Steve Martin's LETS GET SMALL

Oh, and SHAFT, Dad always played the soundtrack to SHAFT

My mother enjoyed Frank Sinatra, which is where I also learned to appreciate his music.  However there were others that I never did grow fond of,  Eddie Arnold, Conway Twitty and Patsy Cline.  Marilyn McCoo and the 5th Dimension was OK.

I remember as a child listening to Simon and Garfunkels greatest hits, Charlie Rich, and Anne Murray, all on 8-track with big old Koss earphones. I listened to Simon and Garfunkel the most. Oh, and Freddie Fender. thanks, folks!

Well, I just mentioned this in the currently playing thread, but my Mom used to always play Cinderella.  She was really into the 80's hair bands (and still is!), but I remember she hated Warrant and Winger.  My dad was only slightly different, he prefered Judas Priest.  He played guitar in a band and was always playing Judas Priest songs.

When it came to road trips, I took more with my grandparents than my parents.  (My parents were young and divorced when I was 5, so they really didn't have enough money for trips.)  My grandparents always took books on tape or old radio shows, which were cool for a while, but then I always got bored and listened to my walkman.

At my folks house at Christmas, the old man still busts out his Perry Como Christmas album and this old "Little Drummer Boy album. He has done this since me and my brother were babies. Its like his thing to do. Those albums are older than we are!

Wow.  That sounds like me.  Since my kids were little I'd play a whole rotation of Chistmas music and movies.  Now the girls ask when are we going to watch such-n-such movie or they want to listen to certain music.  It's become our Christmas tradition.

Oh, man, I remember the big Koss headphones.  I always called them the "fly eye" headphones, because it looked like you had these huge fly eyes on the side of your head.  I would sit and listen to my dad's 8 tracks of Del Shannon and the Four Seasons.  I would sing and on "Ragdoll" I would thump a pillow and pretend it was a tambourine.  Occasionally, my brother or sister would walk by and thump me on the head and say "Shut up!".  I was the bane of their existence.  They would beg for silence in the car rather than hear me singing!  I did it because I loved the music.  It never even factored in that I could annoy the heck out of them.  Forntunately, my parents loved music, too, so they would play it all and let me sing.

I still love music.  A day without music is worse than a day without sunshine.

Hey 5th Dimension too- they are actually QUITE GOOD!! They played the Burlington Wisconsin world famous ChocolateFest about a decade ago and I could hear them from my folks back yard. Really very very good harmonies.

My dad plays everything from Patsy Cline to Iron Butterfly.

As for road trips, I always opted for headphones.

We did take a lot of roadtrips though and ended up getting a conversion van w/ a tv and vcr and just about wore out the video Pretty Woman.

The good old days!

They played a lot of Jefferson Airplane and ELO.  We had the fortune of having a jukebox when I was younger, so my parents stocked it with a huge mix of 60s 70s and 80s.  My folks still have it, and I think the latest song in there is from Benjamin Orr of the Cars.

The one thing I was blessed with was that my parents listened to so many types of music I became very well rounded at an early age.  I can't thank them enough for that.

I ride to work with my Dad every day (which is awesome because my Dad is one of those super cool fathers).  We listen to 50's and 60's.  He is a veritable encylopedia of music trivia.  He likes to test me on it.  I'm not too great, but every now and then I get one that stuns him.  I'm lucky, I still get to go on road trips with my Dad.  He used to have this 8 track with "My Ding-a-ling" on it.  I loved that song.  I wasn't too quick, but I finally figured out what they were talking about.  I still love that song.

Now that's a Chuck Berry classic that should be on the playlist!  Did you know that was his only number one hit?  It stayed on top of the charts for two weeks in August of 1972.

I recall my folks having the Ray Charles Sings Country and Western Music album. In fact, I bet it is still in the record rack in their basement. I suddenly remembered my dad and me listening to that, I was maybe 5? sunglasses on, imitating Ray to that album. laughed till it was hard to breath....
