What are Paczki?:

In the Midwest, Paczki Day is celebrated on Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday.

 

Paczki are flattened sphere-shaped deep-fried dough pieces that are filled with lemon, plum, cherry, and other flavored jam. The paczki are finished with a sprinkling of powdered sugar. They may be iced or uniced.


Paczki Day precedes the beginning of Lent, and the baking of paczki is traditionally a way to use up all of the fat, sugar, and fruit in the house--things forbidden during the strict Polish Lenten season.


Each year scores of Milwaukee citizens spend their Mardi Gras mornings lined up outside of bakeries in recognition of Paczki Day, a Polish holiday celebrated before the beginning of Lent. Similar to Mardi Gras but without the big parades and beaded necklaces, Paczki Day is a "last-minute indulgence in sweets before Lent,"

                     on Fat Tuesday, February 24 @ 9:30

I didn't know what a paczki was. Sounds good though. I guess they are similar to faschnauts then. Usually faschnauts aren't filled.

That is the only way I will eat jelly. I am not a big fan. But a sugared jelly donut I can do. They were my father's favorite.

Of course all this talk about paczkis and faschnauts has me wanting to try to make some faschnauts. Dough and powered sugar. How can you go wrong? Ooo, maybe cinnamon sugar.

JD - they are kind of like a powdered donut. It is the same concept as the paczkis except there is no filling. It is German.
