Morning. We had plenty of rain last night. Now we have fog and a bit of sun trying to fight through the clouds.

I think I'm here for now.

This morning, I got the boy ready for school, put the laptop in hibernate, and we headed for school and the office.

I got the to the office and opened the laptop back up and the fan was making a horrible noise. I thought I'd reboot it and it wouldn't boot: "Fan Error" before it would even try to start up.

I pulled the keyboard out of it and blew as much dust out of it as I could . . . still no boot.

I was starting to panic. I do try to keep good backups and have a backup plan ready, but I really didn't want to test it today.

I came home and opened it back up again and sprayed a bunch of silicone lubricant into the fan. That got it spinning good enough that it would boot and I got a current backup. The longer it ran, the better it was sounding (I think the silicone was working its way into the moving parts of the fan).

Its running good again right now. I did find a new replacement fan/heatsink unit for it on Ebay for $50. I did the "buy it now" and hopefully it will be here next week.

This laptop is 3.5 years old so I'm not totally opposed to buying a new one, but I hear the Windoze 7 is supposed to be out by the end of this year. If a new fan will keep this one going until 7 is shipping, I may try to wait until then before upgrading again.
