JDs Trip To NEW ORLEANS

HEY!

On Monday, May 23rd I am heading out, via Amtrak, to New Orleans to see the sites, drink the drinks, tour the tours, and just get me some good old vacation time. I have always wanted to take a long train trip across America, (either length-wise or width-wise) and with the proposed cuts of Amtrak subsidies from the Feds, I am playing it safe and thinking RIGHT NOW is the time to do so.

Riggs has the idea that I might call into the station once a day during the morning show to give an update of how the trip is going, whether or not I am impressed with New Orleans or not, and whether or not I would recommend it as a vacation spot for our listeners.

I have heard both good and bad things about New Orleans- that its a GREAT history lesson, its a Jazz town, that its one big never-ending party with great food and drink. I have also heard that its filthy and gross. So tune in for my observations that week.

Riggs and I will work out the feasibility, the logistics, and the timing for this before I leave. I may even stop by the studio on the 23rd before I leave and hang with riggs for awhile (this depends on how riggs is doing with getting up and getting into the studio for his pre-work morning show!), as I don't leave until 5:30 that evening.

I, like most of you, like to take 1 good vacation a year (even if its to the motel 6 in west allis depending on the $ that year.) I can picture doing these vacation spot updates in the future as well! Who knows- next year might be Mexico, or it might be Green Bay?

As always, it depends upon the Benjamens, baby!!

JD,

My only advice to you.  When you're walking down Bourbon Street and you see women in the windows and doorways inviting you to visit...not all of them are women!!!  Just a heads up.

I'm jealous! My big family trip this year was a weekend in St. Louis with ALL of my husband's family.  Despite the fact that we live about two hours away from St. Louis, we stayed in a hotel in St. Louis.  Go figure, we're hoosiers.

My best friend from high school took a train trip across the country last year.  She absolutely loved it.  She, too, had always wanted to do that, so she just up and did one summer.  She stopped and went on a wagon train ride and went white water rafting and after each excursion, she'd just get back on the train.  She's a lawyer, blonde, adventurous and SINGLE.

ANYWAY, let us know how it goes!  I hope you have a great (and safe) time.  Drink some hurricanes for me!

Remember, if you find your hotel on your first try after hitting the bars, go back!  You haven't had enough to drink.

Here's more advice on making your trip memorable.  Beads are everywhere.  Women love beads.  Make that drunk women love beads.  Men give beads to women who display their, ...uh..mmm...let me just say carry lots of beads.

thanks folks. I plan on being a GOOD boy when I am down there tho- I got a buddy who was pick-pocketed after a few too many Hurricanes at Pat O'briens!

I'll probably call into the station 9:30-10-ish each morning to give updates on whether the big-easy is a thumbs up or down!

I was there for 4 days in 2002 and didn't see any, must have been out of season.  I was working so my French Quarter time was limited.  I did see the Krewe Du Vieux parade.  I saw things on a float I've never seen any where else.  If you would like an idea try this sight.

Hey!

another reason that I like this idea is that I will be away from the community forum for a whole week, but by checking in by phone, I won't be too far out of the loop!

hey riggs- I used the cell phone to call down to new orleans this evening to make some reservations- it worked just fine; so I am betting all will be cool with me calling in during the morning show from the train, from new orleans, etc

(I got a track-fone? I hardly ever use- I don't even know its phone number- its a pre-paid calling card phone- I HATE cell phones and only carry this one for emergencies or for special circumstances like the JD New Orleans tour update!)

Those trac phones work pretty well from what I've heard.  I'm sure it will be fine.

I recommend the Clover Cafe for breakfast and I wish I could remember the name of the bar we hung out at.  It was on a corner and the dj was doing paradodies of songs-my fav. Jack and Diane, which I had never heard before.  Good luck!
At Clover, when you call the waiter make sure you say "Hey Lady"

Hey JD,

I can be somewhat of a simpleton at times.  I have asked you once where you earned your doctorate in jazz.  I don't recall what your response was (I was probably self absorbed that day).  Just out of curiousity, with New Orleans being the cradle of Amereican Jazz, is this trip for continuing education credits?

I trust you can find some creative way to turn this whole thing into a write-off.  WOO-HOO!

Brilliant!  You are my new hero!

Well Dylan-

The doctorate in jazz is an honorary one from the school of hard knocks! I was down on my luck about 12 yrs ago, was soooo sick of what I was hearing on the radio, so I started tuning into the local jazz broadcast station just for different "background noise". I was sitting around one day, and Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers came on with their version of "Moanin". And I got it. BAM! I totally got jazz. It absolutely colored the way that I looked at the world I've never looked back. Its a history lesson, a music lesson, and a lesson in class all in one.

I started listening to the old Ron Cuzner Dark Side shows when I was working 3rd shift, and it was like spending the night hanging out with a good friend enjoying music all night. It made those long nights not only tolerable, but down-right enjoyable....except the nights when Cuz wasn't in the studio and the station stuck to its smooth-jazz format! Unacceptable!!
