TODAY'S THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS

This post is out there for anyone who wishes to have someone or something in their life prayed over, meditated over, or in any way supported by your fellow Freeze Frame Radio Listeners.

Bring your good news, bad news, or any news you wish to share, and take comfort in the fact that many people will be putting you in their prayers and thoughts.

If a subject is hard to discuss, feel free to post annonymously but please put it out there!  Strength is in numbers, so don't go through your day alone!

Out of respect for the many faiths and beliefs reflected in the Freeze Frame Radio audience, please post only PRAYER REQUESTS.  How you pray for your friends is between you and The Almighty, however you choose to do so.

GO FORTH TODAY!  AND KNOW THAT YOUR NOT ALONE!

You know, I find most of my prayers the last decade or so were spontaneous thank yous.

I had one of these a couple of days ago- A lady here at work (whom I DO NOT LIKE, but that's moot in THIS case) told me her son get back from Iraq alive and physically unharmed. When she told me the news I was "THANK GOD!"

JD, I think things like that would be very appropriate here too.

Last week my husband put his application and resume into a company for a better paying job.  Today when I went home for lunch, I noticed they had called, but our answering machine is not working properly, so their message didn't save.  My husband called back, but the lady who called him was out to lunch.  So, he's currently waiting at home for her return call.  Hopefully, it's for an interview and then a job!  If he gets this job, I can quit my 2nd job!  It has good pay, better benefits, and 3-12 hour days, which means on the other 4 days he'd be all mine!  Maybe after a couple months we'll pay off our debts and have enough money for DSL!  I really hope he gets this job...

My mom, dad, grandmother, aunt and uncle will be flying back from Germany on Saturday.  I'm praying for a safe, uneventful flight.

My mom also told me on the phone that my brother-in-law got some bad news, which means to me that he is going to be deployed to Iraq, she didn't want to say so on the phone.  My sister just found out that she's pregnant and will give birth probably while he's gone.  They have a one year old daughter and I have a nephew by my brother-in-law's first marriage who is 11 that lives in Texas.  Please send good vibes their way, if you would.

I'm sending them all out to all of you!

Wow people, that was some fast praying!  They called my husband back, did a short interview, and offered him a job!  He goes in for orientation in the morning!

Trish, your family is in my thoughts.  Hopefully your brother in law won't have to stay over there very long.

I need to put one in myself!

Thanks to some corporate shenanigans, my company finds itself in a bad way.  We need some new clients soon and I would really appreciate some prayers for us to be sent in the right direction.

Man, the timing of this thread is perfect, because something happened today that shook me a little bit and I'm hoping a little prayer will help.

I stop home on my route at around 3:15 every day, and today when I left again at about 3:25 I saw a guy walking down my block holding his chest.  He was probably in his 40's, quite heavy-set, and having trouble breathing.

I asked him if he was ok and he said he was walking home from the bar a block away (I can see it from my living room window) and was just out of breath, he asked if I'd mind giving him a ride, that he only lived about a block away.

But he was really seemingly in bad shape, so I asked if I should call 911, but he insisted he was just out of breath (even though he kept holding his chest).

I drove him to his apartment, and along the way could see he was a smoker (he had a pack of cigarettes in his pocket).  I again asked him to let me take him to the emergency or call 911, but he refused (at this point he was still breathing so heavy he could barely talk and still holding his chest).  I just couldn't convince him to let me help him.

He thanked me for the ride, shook my hand, and told me his name (first & last).  I watched him go into the apartments and then I had to get moving because I was late on my route.

But this bothered me the rest of the day.  In fact I missed two of my off-ramps because my mind was on him instead of my job and so I kept falling further behind all day.

As I was driving all I kept thinking was "what if this guy lives alone" (which I would bet he does based on his appearance and the fact he was walking home from a bar at 3 in the afternoon).  He could die of a heart-attack in his apartment and it could be days before someone noticed.

I was wishing I had gotten his phone number, or given him my number, or called 911, or SOMETHING.

At any rate, I'm praying tonight that this man is ok.  I'm also planning on stopping by his apartment tomorrow to check on him.

I know this may sound wierd, but lately I've really started to beleive everything has a purpose.  The fact that he got off his barstool and started walking, and I got up from my computer and headed out to the car, just in time for us to cross paths, makes me feel like I was supposed to help this guy, and I'm worried I didn't do enough.

I also feel like the fact he made a point of telling me his ENTIRE name was an opportunity to actually be able to check up on him, because I can go back to the apartment and find his name on the mailbox so I know which door to knock on.  I mean, I never tell people my entire name in a greeting.  I would say, "Hi, I'm Jeremy", not "Hi, I'm Jeremy Riggs".  It just seemed odd.

Anyway.  I suppose this post sounds a bit insane, but the whole incident is still weighing kind of heavy on my mind and I needed to get it out there.

J-

I would have called 911 on the spot and not let him into my car.  Are you nuts?!  He could have been a killer.  I guess I'm just more safe than sorry.  But you did the nice thing.  Let us know what happens.

LOL, you know, I never even really gave that any thought.  It's kind of funny, because I've always been that way.

About five years ago when I was running a commercial cleaning company I was filling in for a sick cleaner on Super Bowl Sunday (yeah, sick, riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight) and when I went into the building (a two story dental facility) it was obvious is had been robbed.  They got robbed every now and then by people looking for drugs.

Anyway, the place was trashed, everything that could be pulled out, torn apart or knocked over WAS.

Instead of doing the smart thing which would be to call the cops I went in and looked room to room yelling as I went to anyone who might be in there.  When I got through the entire building and found no one THEN I called the cops.

For some reason it never occured to me that I could wind up getting hit over the head or worse.  After the cops got there and admonished me, then I started to think about the risk I may have taken.

That was the time the cop scared the heck out of me too, because he was a frumpy, over-coat wearing, plain clothes detective, and while we're standing in the lobby he said "I'm retiring in three weeks".  Which we all know, in the movies would mean he was about to get wacked!

Anyway, I've gotten way off point of the prayer thread.  I will keep you guys up to date on what I find out about the guy I helped yesterday.

Sometimes you forget judgement and just be more nice than safe.  There have been so many times that I have relied on the helpfulness of strangers that I am so grateful they helped me instead of playing it safe.

Jeremy, that guy is probably grateful that you did as much as you did.  If he explicity asked you not to call 911, you followed his wishes, and you shouldn't beat yourself up about that.  Checking up on him today would probably be a good thing.  Not only will you be making sure that he's okay, but doing so you may be more of a friend that anyone else this guy has right now.

I don't know about that, guys.  It depends on where you live.  Where we live, it's safe to do that to a certain extent.  I have picked up people that I knew were locals, but didn't know personally.  I would never do that in St. Louis.  I will stop to help out an old man or a woman in the town about 30 minutes away from us, but I don't do it if I have my kids with me in the car.

I'll say a prayer and hope that everything is all right.  That is scary.  I agree, everything happens for a reason.  I have had several instances where I was going to go somewhere and for some reason I ran late (outside of the fact that I'm always late) and when I got to where I was going I found out there was an accident where I would have been if I had left on time.  Scary.  I've had that happen at least 3 times (in one year, no less).  I think someone was sending me a message.

Congrats, Mz.  Hope everything works out well for you guys.

Way to go, JR.

I applaud your courage, heart, and willingness to care.  Never doubt that things happen for a reason.  Give us an update.

TO ALL:  Please keep the U.S.A. on your hearts and in your thoughts today, it is the National Day of Prayer.  Also let's not for get the UK and Ultimo, they are having their national elections today.

You know Mz, that's EXACTLY the vibe I got from this guy, that he really didn't have anyone to turn to.

He mentioned to me he had asked two other people on the block before to help him and they ignored him.  That's horrible.  I couldn't live with myself if this guy dropped dead from a heart-attack in front of me and I didn't try to help him.

The guy couldn't have been more thankful either, he was truly appreciative that I gave him a hand.  But even today I'm a little disappointed I didn't do more.  I'm almost positive he had a bigger problem than "being out of breath".

I'm gonna leave a little early today and stop by and see if he's up and about.

I agree that everything happens for a reason.  Before I met my husband, he and his friend had planned to move across the country to San Diego.  They had an apartment set up and everything.  And then halfway there, they're car broke down and they had to use all their money to fix it; they had to come back to Indiana and didn't get to go to San Diego.  A month or so later, my husband met me.  We (and all of our friends) have no doubt that I was the reason he didn't make it to California.

All of the FFR family is alive and well today, and that in itself is a blessing.  Thanks to everyone for your thoughts and prayers, and I'll keep everyone (and the guy down the street) in my thoughts today.

Trish--my thoughts and prayers for your family.  May I also interject my complete and total admiration for the military personnel for the sacrifices they make.  I usually look for one in the airport as I travel--if they have a layover, I take them with me to the Exec Lounge.  Many times they think I am hitting on them.  I simply tell them that I admire their courage, strength and dedication.  I don't know if you have seen the movie A Few Good Men.  One of my favorite lines is where Demi is asked--"Why do you like them so much?"  Her response, "because they stand on a wall and say nothing's going to hurt you tonight, not on my watch.

JR-what a great thing you did, but do not live your life with what if.  What you did was pay it forward.  (Don't know if you saw that movie either.  I did on an airplaine.  Not a good movie to watch on an airplaine.  It took everything I had not to cry at the end, I was so afraid of being embarrassed.)

What a great thread.  Thanks for starting it.  I needed to read this today.  It puts into perspective that getting lost in the service of others is one of the greatest gifts not only to the recipient, but to the giver.

I'd also like to thank Jeremy or whoever put the Amber Alerts on the front page.  I always check that at least once a day, and every time I see one, I read it, even if it's from across the country.

Hey you know I just thought of this too- on Sunday nights when I'm broadcasting, I often check the web page, the boards, my e-mail etc. But I keep an eye on the Amber Alert. I've announced a few on air, but more often than not I am able to say "It's Sunday Night...there are no Amber alerts....thank god for that." I

Thanks WFTR - and yes, I agree - I appreciate seeing the ticker on the front page. I always check them when they turn yellow - and am so relieved when the messages come up that they've been cancelled...

My family got home and are doing great.  Thanks for the thoughts, guys.  My dad leaves for Detroit today on business and my brother-in-law is leaving for Baghdad on Thursday.  If you could, send some positive thoughts their way.  My sister is going to have her hands full for a while.  She's expecting and she has a 1 year old and she's in the Air Force, also.  I'm wishing she were closer so that I could help her out, but I will have to make do with prayers and phone calls.

What horrible news to wake up to.. I'm not the praying type, but I certainly hope they find the assailants who killed those two girls in Illinois. I alway think I'm too overprotective. I won't even let my daughter go out an ride her bike without me, then I read something like this and am saddened that I might be right. I hope they find the killers, and if it's a bunch of kids in a gang, I hope they're tried like adults.

Star-

Sorry for the delay in an update.  I keep forgetting to get back here and update the story.

I went to the apartment complex the next day around the time I had given the guy a ride the day before and no one answered.  At that point I kind of decided not to go back, because I realized if he WASN'T all right there wasn't really anything I could do about it at that point.

However, this Saturday I beleive I saw him walking out of a small diner a few blocks from my house, so I think he's ok.

I saw the story about the little girls this morning.  That was so tragic.  My prayers are with their families.  I won't let my son ride around town by himself and we live in a moderately safe town.  We live near the river, though, and I know he would play in it and that can be deadly.  Up until a few years ago, people didn't even lock their doors.  We have had one murder in 12 years.  Still, I'm vigilant.  In Illinois, it is a law that you register if you are a sex offender and you can access the information with a picture of the person and what they were charged with and their current address so that you know not to let your children around them.  We have three in our county and I make sure that my kids know not to go near them.  Kids are too precious.  I know there are similar laws in other states.  Check it out if you get a chance.  Good thoughts to everyone.
