Goodell Reinstated Vick

Anyone shocked? I'm not. Sure, he has a 6 game restriction... but he can practice and play in the pre-season games if someone will sign him.

The question is: who needs the help and is willing to sign him? You also have to wonder what kind of "football" shape he is in. There is being in shape, but somwtimes in sport you have to play yourself into shape when you have been absent for a period of time.

There are a few teams who have publicly announced that they won't touch him. I'm not sure who will, but somebody will. They won't make him their starter, but they will put him on the roster just to sell some tickets.

I'm not shocked, but I am disappointed.

I've said this before and I'll say it again. To me it's not an issue of if he's paid his debt to society.

Playing in the NFL is a privilege, not a right. It doesn't matter to me if he's paid the "legal" penalty for what he's done. The NFL has a right (and in this case I feel a moral obligation) to take away his privilege to play in their league.

Part of me really thought Goodell would draw the line on this bozo, but once again I'm left disappointed.

I think Goodell is trying to look like the NFL is giving him a fair shake here. His offense was not related to football, so it seems he would have a hard time justifying banning him for life. I think the 6 game penalty does make him significantly less appealing, but I have a feeling he will get signed by someone... hopefully not the Chiefs since we just signed a good QB for this season.

Perhaps the Vikings will sign him if Favre decides to stay retired and stick with it. Seems like the Vikings might be a good home for him since they apparently have little issue with having players with questionable legal histories.

I just read another article on the return of Vick. Apparently along with the technical "time out", Goodell is placing a bunch of restrictions on Vick's personal life which he is tying to his return to the NFL. Vick will also be required to have "counselors and meantors guide him through his attempted comeback"... starting reportedly with Tony Dungy who is his liason. He will have to keep Goodell informed as to his "living arrangements" and how he will "manage his financial affairs". In short, Goodell is basically saying that Vick will have to seek approval for every aspect of his personal life. If Goodell disapproves of any of it, then Vick gives up his NFL career.

As much as I hate to say it, I think this is going too far. I think what Vick did was horrible and he absolutely should have served the time that he did. I think his return to the NFL should not be without a price, specifically the game suspensions are a good thing. I don't, however, think it is fair to make him play "Mother, May I?" with every aspect of his personal life. Fundamentally speaking, if the guy wants to waste his own money that is up to him. Where he wants to live and with whom is his business too. These restrictions are not imposed on the drunk drivers, abusers, and cheaters. When those guys make the news, the get suspended for a game or two and maybe traded to another team... then it all goes away.

Yes, Goodell has a responsibility to guard the reputation of the NFL and to protect the interests of the teams and the fans. However, this should be done even-handedly and across the board... not just to the guy who made big news and really embarrassed himself and the NFL.
