I hate spiders, but it's amazing to me how they know how to build a web.
I was watching a webcam from a local TV station the other day. It's just a camera on top of a tall building downtown that looks onto the streets below. When I turned it on a spider was making a web in front of the lens. They have such a sense of purpose when they're building the web, it's like clockwork. a strand out to the end, a strand to the other end, a couple more in different directions, then they start circling, stopping at each spoke to "attach" the new strand to an old one.
When I saw that, I couldn't help but think about that spider as he was making that web last night. He wasn't worried about health care. He wasn't concerned about stimulus packages. He wasn't worried about the pile of bills on the table. He is not saving for his kid's education. He's never even heard of global warming. In his tiny little brain, he was just making a web. That is it, just makin' a web.
Sometimes I wish it could be that simple for us too.

On the other hand, the spider's thinking he has to make a good web, or he won;t eat, and then he'll die. The obstacles for him are simpler and more starightforward than ours, but the end result is potentially the same.....
Wow, heavy philosophy for so early in the morning!

We used to have a spider that would build a web every evening in front of our kitchen window around the time I was washing dishes. Probably because I the light over the sink would attract moths. Next morning she would take down the web in the same fashion as she woud build it, but in reverse, stopping after each spoke to clean off the web debris from her legs as she went.
