Did anyone else watch these? Anyone else think it was a trainwreck?
It started out good. Madonna gave a nice speech about Michael Jackson. Then they played some of his videos/music all ending with Janet Jackson coming out and dancing.
From there they had Katy Perry singing a Queen song and introducing (I'm probably showing my age here) some guy I'd never heard of before, Richard Brand.
Well from there the show deteriorated into a crap fest in my opinion.
Richard Brand has to be the least funny guy I've seen host an awards show in my entire life. After a lewd comment about being under stage and getting to stare at Perry's "glorious entrance" on her back end he proceeded to make joke after joke that no one laughed at. Very awkward.
Then of course Kanye "if I wasn't doing this music thing I'd be making license plates for a living" West interrupted Taylor Swifts acceptance speech for best female video of the year, going on a rant about how Beyonce should have won (which she eventually WOULD for best Video overall).
It calmed down some after that other than Brand's continued dirty jokes that no one laughed at.
I suppose this is just what MTV wanted. Lots of publicity for their "music" television station that hasn't played music in a decade. They quickly had their website updated after the Kanye rant with pictures and video of the incident, so clearly they weren't too ashamed by it.
I saw the Kanye thing on the news this morning. He should be banned from any such events in the future. He's proven he is not capable of acting like a human.
I heard that Beyonce when she won Best Video, she invited Taylor Swift up to finish her speech. I kind of take that as Beyonce saying, "Kayne, you're a rude ahole."
Yeah. Beyonce has always been pretty classy. I thought that was really great of her to bring Taylor back up.
I'm glad to read today that they asked West to leave during the show.
He posted an apology on his website, but it doesn't sound like much of an apology. Actually he sounds possessed, it's like he goes back and forth between apologizing and saying "screw you all".
I was gonna repost his apology here, but his blog is missing from his web page now. You click on it and it just brings up a blank page.
So then I went to his forum to see what people were saying. The first page of posts are all missing. It just says no posts exist, then page 2 starts with posts from August 28'th.
Not an excuse for treating people badly, but could explain things -- I heard on the radio this morning that people close to him have mentioned that he's changed since the passing of his mother...

The guy is Russell Brand. He's from "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" I love him in that movie! But hosting...not so much. 2nd year doing it I believe. I only tuned in to see someone particular and nothing was on anyway. Glad I did, only so I know what everyone was talking about.

Yeah, I read that he hosted last year and I was shocked. The guy just wasn't funny. I mean almost every joke was met with awkward silence all night long.
Oh well. Probably the last VMA's I'll ever watch. Most of the music they play isn't my cup of tea anymore anyway.
Can I just stick up for Russell Brand, I love the man, seen him live and he really is a great comedian, now I didn't see this years VMAs, so I can't comment on this particular performance and I know his comedy will not be to everyones taste, but I am a big fan, check out some of his stand up on you tube, he is worth a second chance.
