? Of The Day - May 31, 2005

BMG Direct recently bought out Columbia Record Club for $400 million.

This makes BMG the ONLY music club still in business.

The question is, do you have any stories about joining (and perhaps never paying) the record clubs?!!?

How about your first experience with the clubs?

Let it loose, let us hear it!

I never got into a record club, but when I first moved out of my parents house, I joined a recipe club.  Worst idea ever!  I ended up paying about $100 for about the same number of recipes that would be in a book, and I never use them!  And, there was a point where I didn't pay (I told them to cancel it and they didn't), so then they tried to send me to a collections agency for $30!  I finally sucked it up and paid it, but I'm never doing anything like that again!

My Dad was in one of them and he let my brothers and I pick a few cassettes each.  This is when I was younger, obviously.  It worked out good because we each got some new music every so often.  We didn't have any problems as far as I know.

I did one of the two when I was younger. I did it without my parent's permission. A penny was easy to come by. Like Riggs, I never fulfilled my end of the bargain. However, when I grew up (hold on that has not happened yet!) I joined both and within like six months I developed quite a cd collection. However, now I just listen to FFR. Thanks Riggs you are saving me money everyday!

Wow,

So far I'm surprised to see a 50/50 split between people who joined and people who didn't.

I thought the record clubs were a rite of passage for every kid.  Although, it IS interesting that ALL the people who answered that they DID join have said they joined MULTIPLE TIMES

i joined so many times with so many different names and so many different addressses.   it was crazy.  First name / Last Name   First name/ Middle initial/ Last name   First Initial/ Last name  First name as a nick name instead of full/ Last name    First name spelled wrong/last name and then repeat it all at different addresses, grandma's house, Auntie's house, etc.  out of the 600 or so cd's i have probably a good 1/3rd of them came from columbia house deals.

Luckily i have outrgown columbia house scam thing.   (actually, i don't buy that many CD's anymore, i have moved into burning my own)

Are you kidding?  I cannot believe all those who have not experienced it.  I used to join under different names.  I had a cassete and LP collection like you could not believe.  I would fulfill the contract and then cancel.  When you do, you get even better offers back in the mail.  I do not do it now, but they roped my daughter in BMG.  Even still to this day I have probably over 500 cd, 300 cassettes and 300 lp's.  Most are duplicates now as I buy the cd's of the favorite album.  I didn't watch TV in high school or college.  I worked as a Bartender, so music was everything.  I will admit that there is one song I learned to hate, "It's Raining Men"  It was played a lot at Park Avenue every other Sunday night where I tended bar.  Those Sunday's were the alternative lifestyle nights.  I loved working those nights becasue my tips doubled.

I had gotten into the bad habit of not returning the card in time, so I'd get the cd of the month. I got one that I never bothered to listen too for 10 yrs. As jazz was my selected category; I got one from "new" vocalist Diane Reeves called "I Remember", recorded in 1988. It sat on my cd rack for a decade. I found it one day and threw it on, and was plesantly suprised! The song "I Remember" is probably the "prettiest" song I've ever heard to this day. & the whole cd is soooo good! My loss for a decade of not knowing that!

Think I'll have to pull out some Diane Reeves for an upcoming Jazz 101 pretty soon!

I never subscribed to one because my parents said it was a scam. But every time one came in the mail I'd read all that teeny tiny print looking for this scam text they kept talking about. I guess the upswing is that I'm very good at reading the fine print now, and I never did join any, even as an adult. By that time I realized I was the type who listens to something for about a week and then can't stand to listen to it anymore, with the exception of Pink Floyd... So I'm glad I don't have much of a music collection.

I joined both a couple of times.  It built up my collection but I did get burned a few times for not sending the card back. They would automatically send the CD most of the time it was ok but I did get a few that I wouldn't have bought.  I did it for 4 or 5 years.  I still get offers to come back once or twice a year.  Now those go straight to the trash.  My cd buying has slowed way down.  I now go to the library and borrow and burn.

Of course, you would make an exception to buy the Late Night Drive CD this fall right Ray?

Sorry Man, some of that powerful JD self promotion voodoo is in the air.

ya, i joined BMG.  got sent to collections.  then i joined book of the month club.  LAME too.  their books are bad quality.  i never went to collections with them, but ya,  i had to be in a contract for 2 years.  the music club thing is a good deal.  i'm bitter about cd's though because my husband and i lost our entire collection last time we moved.  it's been like 2.5 years and we're still not even over it.  makes it hard to buy new ones.  maybe i will joint that darn bmg agian to rebuild our empire.

Dylan,

I'm hoping to pick up my autographed Late Night Drive CD at the release party.  Just let me know when and where!

Getting back to the thread.  Remember the thrill when the box was in the mailbox.  It was like Christmas until the CD you were really looking forward to was back ordered.

Dylan- You're on!

I'll have to bring my wife too.  I'm sure she would love to meet the young Elvis.

If truth be told,

So would I Ray, so would I.  You and I are pretty close in age.

I do have a picture in the attic that keeps getting older though.

Next to that, music is a close second for trying to beat the clock.

Dog riding monkeys do the trick too buddy.

WHAT?

Are you saying "pay no attention to the man behind the curtain"?

Who cares!  You're only as young as you want to be.

I've found getting involved with the kids activities can really keep you young.  Plus you know their friends.

Then one day you daughter comes to you and says, "Dad, all my friend think you and mom are cool."  Then you ask, "Is that a good thing?"  And she says, "Yeah."

OOOOps off track on another thread.

Ray,

You have such a great sense of humor, its no wonder your kids and their friends think of you as the cool dad.

Also, I learned a long time ago, threads were made to be unravelled.
