R.I.P the Concert Experience- CYA

Paul McCartney, U2, The Stones, all going on tour in 2005. It will cost you $400 for good seats (at least) and $60 for the crap seats. These are all "artists" that I really like, have seen before, and would like to see again. But not THAT badly.

Even Weezer and the Pixies, who are playing Summerfest, claim to have $25 tickets. BUT IF YOU WANT TO BUY 2 ONLINE THEY TACK ON $34 of "miscellaneous surcharges".

SCREW EM!

And I get all sorts of e-mails "If you join the official fan club for $50 a year, you can get in on the "presale" which gives you a chance to spend full price on a ticket, plus $50, which makes you better than joe-average, who gets dibs a day after you. Join now, and you'll have the chance to shop RIGHT NOW in our online plaza for t-shirts, belts, and $800 replica prints. Be the first in your neighborhood to be cool enough to own one! Make your INVESTMENT in 2005 tickets worth-while!"

SCREW EM!

Any one of these shows- Stones, McCartney, U2, MIGHT find me downtown with a $50 bill the night of the shows husling with the scalpers. Tix ain't worth a dime after the first song. There'll be plenty. I have faith in humanity that they are not that stupid to pay full price. And come to think of it, I have little desire to see a 62 yr old Jagger sing "Rocks Off" or "Satisfaction", or a middle aged beer belly belching Bono croon "With or Without You".

RIP the concert experience. Glad I caught the "old school" for $40 back in the day....I have little desire to relive that anyhow. I was there.

I guess the biggest reason this gouging tics me off is that I have a couple of photo albums filled with pretty much all my ticket stubs from 1985 forward. This is what me and my best friend MOT do- we go to shows and rock out. For 20 yrs now.

Every couple of years I like to bust the ticket collection out and look at it- as every ticket has a story behind it and memories from that night attached to it. It's nice to remember these good fun days in my life, and add to that collection. But these absurd prices make me long for the good old days of $25 5th row seats to INXS or $5 Smithereens Seats. I am not so lost in longing for the "good old days" that I will bend over, spread em and pay hundreds of dollars to relive them. RIP -they are gone.

JD-
I'm with you on the ticket prices. I haven't been to a big name concert in years. I'll go but only if I reallly think it's worth it. They're pricing themselves out of the market...at least my market. Give me the old days. I saw the Eagles Hotel California Tour in 1976. Joe Walsh had just join the band and my ticket for upper level seating was $12.
I saw the J. Geils Band in 1982 great show. The opening act was a little band called U2. I didn't think much of them but they did have a couple hundred people going nuts for them. Shows what I know.

I hear you Ray. Each time the stones come around, the djs on the local classic rock station go "man.....I saw them like for $5 at County Stadium in '75 man....." Maybe the 35+ crowd is not "too old" to go to concerts anymore; they're just too wise.

No doubt!!!  We have a few local bars that some national bands and musicians will play at, and you're still paying at least $20 to stand and watch them.  Add to that some watered down, overpriced beer (and I don't drink beer!), and that's really the closest I get to the concert scene any more.  Hey, I'm still a kid, I can't afford to go see a decent show.

Something else related that pisses me off is the artists who have a paid members only section on their websites.  You can't even look at the message boards on DavidBowie.com without paying $65 a year!  Personally, I LOVE Bowie, he's one of my favorite artists of all time (if not THE artist), but $65 is a little outrageous.  You do get a CD with it.  I still don't think it's worth $65.  Who's this money going to?

I agree too! You sound alot like me JD. I too have my tickets from former concerts. I saw U2 in 1985 and I paid under thirty bucks! I am glad I saw who I wanted to see back in the day. The Eagles came here not too long ago and tickets started at $365.00! FORGET IT!

This ties in to the locker room and art discussions.  The elitest attitude of celebrity these days is mind boggling.  They truly feel as though the real world doesn't affect them, and that they are doing us a favor by appearing.  There is only one appearance that ranks that high for me, and that ticket has already been paid for.

The only one I will mildy defend is U2.  Bono has really turned his stardom into an agent for change and much of the concerts profits will probably go towards the causes he supports.  BUT, that still does not justify those prices.  If you have a strong message and a worthy cause then you want as many people as possible to be there.  Pricing yourself out of range ain't gon'na get you there.

In Milwaukee we have Summerfest which begins a week from today. While there are pricier shows that require tickets to enter at the ampitheater, you can check out a lot of people on the free stages- great for seeing them artists that you might have liked back in the day, might still like, but wouldn't pay to go see (outside of the $12 admission ticket to the grounds).

Steve Winwood, Los Lobos, Moby,Hall & Oates, Issac Hayes, and The Donnas are all featured on the free stages during the fest. Not a bad deal.
