Instruments

Hey!

As a kid, did you take any musical intrument lessons? If so- what instrument, & for how long & do you still play, or if not, is there a song you could still beat out on said instrument?

For me, I wanted to play drums something fierce. But the folks would have none of it. They bought a piano, and I took lessons for a couple of years. I have not touched a piano in 25 yrs, except for at the occasional party or two, and like riding a bike, I can beat out a mean rendition of "When the Saints Come Marching In". That was beat for all eternity into my brain through repetition, repitition, repitition.

A few years later it was guitar lessons. Pretty much all I recall now is root-chords tho. And I couldn't read music anymore if I tried!

I took organ lessons. I sucked.

I took piano lessons. I sucked

I tried to teach myself harmonica. I sucked.

I DO HOWEVER play the radio really well. Does that count?

I took bagpipe lessons for 7 years...alot of hot air needed venting.

Jeremy is also very modest...he is one mean triangle player.

And JD at some parties plays one mean bassoon once he gets enough liquid courage.

Hey, we should start a band!

well I know Dylan would be the exception to this thread. But I bet with Rigg's mad-whack kazoo skills and my spoons we might re-invent the next generation of skiffle!

Organ lessons too, can still play Chopsticks! Guitar lessons from some yellow glasses pervert. Can still play House of the Rising Sun!

I always preferred to be a groupie instead of in the band!

I play the radio and iPod.
When I was 9 I took piano lessons for a year then had to quit do to a medical problem. Never took it up again. I wish I did. Of course I played the recorder in fourth grade. Every kid in Indiana gets to play that in the fourth grade.

Ray's right, recorder, 4th grade (though I'm thinking it was 3rd...).

In middle school I played the clarinet and bass clarinet (the bass clarinet was much more fun), but come high school I didn't want to be in marching band, so it kinda just fell from there.  I used to play on my grandpa's organ and keyboard all the time, but I never got any formal lessons.  I wish I had; I wish I could play piano.  Or drums, I would love to play drums, but I don't know if I'm coordinated enough!  I've also always wanted to play lap guitar.

Aw yes THE RECORDER! This weird smelly kid named Donnie taught himself how to play "Physical" by Olivia Newton John on that damned thing. I'll never forget how he got to go to the front of the class to play like a 7 minute rendition of Physical in front of 30 kids. I saw Donnie maybe 2 yrs ago teaching elderly water arobics in the kiddie pool at the YMCA. He's still weird, but at least he's clean now. He rides around town on an aqua blue Vespa with a matching helmet too...

Sparky,  did you ever do the water on the rim of a crystal glass?

I will admit, I was a wooden spoon pan banger.

MZ, I tried a few times but could never get it to make the eerie sounds. I must have been using the wrong kind of glasses.

We used to bang on coffee cans also.

I can't be sure, but we were younger, may have tried to do that in the pool. I guess I would remember if we also didn't try to sing too.

I, too, learned how to play the recorder and can still do it.  My favorite song to play on there was "Flying Free".  I also took piano lessons and still know the basics.  My piano teacher got divorced while I was still taking piano lessons and since we lived in Germany, once you got divorced, they hauled you back to the states, so I lost out on that.  I taught myself to play "Flying Free" on the piano, too.  Other than that, no musical instruments.  Well, not any that count anyway!

I played clarinet in grammer school but I disliked my band instructor so much that when I got to high school I stopped playing.  Can't read music anymore and forgot all the fingering, which is a real shame.  Hasn't kept me from performing, however!

Wef, have you tried to play lately?  I tried about a year ago with a 3.5 reed and wondered how in the world I used to play for hours on end.  My lips got sore so quick!

Unfortunately MZ I don't even own a clarinet anymore.  I loaned it out a few years ago, never got it back, and fell out of contact with the guy.  I don't know if my computer ravaged hand would let me cover the keys anyways.  Kind of pathetic, aint it?

The keys are still pretty easy to cover (when you remember the fingerings, that is!), though I'm sure it would be harder on the bass clarinet!  The bass was a rental, but I still have my clarinet, it's sitting in the closet getting dusty.

I was supposed to take guitar lessons from this semi famous guy in PA.  It took weeks to get scheduled with him so my mom bought me my guitar and I waited and waited for my lessons.  Ended up getting a call a couple of days before my lessons were to begin and was told that the guy, who I can't remember his name right now for the life of me, was found dead in his house and that I wouldn't be able to take lessons from me.  Don't really know why but to this day I haven't had lessons but I still have my guitar.

Weird but I haven't thought about the lessons in a loooooooong time.

I have always wanted to play the saxaphone but have never done it.  Might have to look into doing that.

I would say it doesnt matter what instrument you are drawn to, but I think everyone should learn to play an instrument regardless of age.  It is such a powerful release and a great way for self expression.  I have played guitar since I was 8 and cant believe what a void would exist in my life if I didnt have music as an outlet.

Thats another reason why I listen to FFR, I don't know how to play an instrument.
