ISLANDIA, N.Y. - The tip-off was the sunglasses.

A New Yorker faces a $135 traffic fine for using a mannequin as her "plus one" in the high-occupancy vehicle lane of the Long Island Expressway.

An alert sheriff's deputy on Long Island became suspicious this week when he saw the "passenger" wearing sunglasses and using the visor. The problem: The sky was overcast.

When he stopped the vehicle, he found the mannequin, fully dressed with a long dark wig, blazer, shirt and scarf.

The 61-year-old driver left with a summons. In addition to a fine, she could be hit with two points on her license.

"At first glance, this may seem humorous but it is not a joking matter when you drive off with a ticket," Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco told NBC News.

No kidding.

C'mon. If I go through the trouble and the creep factor to have a mannequin in my car I think I've earned the right to use the carpool lane.

And that one looks pretty darn real.  I bet other drivers never even noticed.

Phil Spector had a mannequin made of himself, and never let Ronnie drive off without it in the passenger seat. He is one messed up dude. no.gif

I bet it worked for quite a while. It just cracks me up that the police officer pulled the car over because the passenger was wearing sunglasses and using the visor on a cloudy day... I don't generally use the visor, but I wear sunglasses a lot when driving, even sometimes when it is not so bright out. Cuts the glare of oncoming headlights and the reflection off of snow and fog.

And here I thought you always wore them to hide your identity from adoring fans and paparazzi.

I wear sunglasses a lot period. Unless it's actually nighttime or I'm inside, I'm probably wearing my glasses.

And it's not unusual to just leave the visor down on the passenger's side.

My eyes are extremely light sensitive and I often have sunglasses on when driving regardless of the weather. Sometimes an overcast day is worse for me.

You're even wearing them in your avatar!

Exactly.  I did that on purpose.  In fact, I have a pair of sunglasses that look very similar to those.

There was a person in my state that did the same thing except it was a blow up doll with a wig.
