Let's Build a TANK!

It seems that we haven't built anything in a while.

Let's build a tank . . . shall we?

This is a pinewood derby car for the boy and his Wednesday night "AWANA" club at church.

We have some overall limitations to deal with. Our "car" can not be outside certain maximum dimensions and it can not weigh more than 5 ounces. We must use the block of wood supplied (we can add to it if necessary) and we must use the included wheels.

We begin with our basic kit:

You may be wondering how we're going to make a tank out of that block of wood. Well, in the words of my buddy, and mentor, Mr. Miyagi . . . we simply "remove what not look like tank".

Here we go!

I thought you started this yesterday. Are you holding out on us?

The most important thing to a pinewood derby car is the wheels. For our tank, we drilled new holes and temporarily attached the wheels for now. We want to be able to remove them later to paint.

It's looking good. Maybe we should stop here and call it done?

Somehow I think the boy would want something a little more unique that a rectangle of wood on wheels.

And what is the point of a tank without the cannon?

Alright, you talked me into it. Let's keep going.

We gotta have "tracks" on a tank. Let's cut pieces to begin the tracks.

tank3.jpg

We'll start with cutting out the wheel areas.

Nice... smile

So, is the boy building this from your imagination, or a "build a tank kit"?

And the part that makes up the tracks is in relief from the original piece of wood, or actually a seperate piece that was cut and adhered to the body with some sort of adhesive?  confuse

Just curious... my dad was a woodworker / carver and I was always amazed at how he could look at a piece of wood and carve it into something very intricate.

I love the way wood smells....  aww

This is pretty much dad's imagination. He's a little young to be running saws yet so he'll be in the paint/finish department.

The pieces for the tracks are extra pieces. We have to use the block supplied for the "core" but we can add to it.

That's a good idea, fuzzy. The only problem is height. We have to keep it under 3" and we're almost there already.

Dovetails does most of the heavy lifting around here. I just try to keep him working . . . that is the most difficult part.

Almost done.

We need some "wheels" to support the tracks:

One final thing in the building time. The cars can not weigh over 5 ounces. The tank is a lot like me and its rather chubby. To get it down to to weight, I had to do a little liposuction.

tank8.jpg

I took it to the post office and they put it on the scale for me. We're under 5 oz now! clap.gif

I think we're done building. Now, it goes to the paint boy so he can give it a camo treatment. I don't know if we'll do green or brown camo yet. We'll have to see what's available here at the store and decide from there.

Thanks smile.gif

I don't expect a tank to win the speed race, but maybe we'll have a shot at the "most unique" or "design" award.
