I'd like to think our poor president is doing a good job and then something like this happens.  I mean you think we would have caught Bin Ladden by now!  It's been 4 years!  I know he's trying his best and I'm no military expert but maybe he's barking up the wrong tree.

I'll tell ya, I know JD thinks I'm nuts, but I think we don't want to catch Bin Laden yet.

I think we know exactly where he is, and we know what he's doing, but the last thing we want to do is catch him. While we have him under surveillance we can monitor his activities and perhaps gain some knowledge of Al Qaida's moves. If we kill him or bring him into custody I think the uproar among Al Qaida and even some muslims would be huge. It would really cause them to rally to their cause.

If in fact we have no clue where he is, then that is truly disappointing. But in the end, Bin Laden is nothing but a figure head anyway at this point.

It's strange, but the fact that there are large scale attacks shows that we have made progress.  JR hit the point when he said that these terrorists are cowards.  When things are going their way, then the large scale stuff doesn't happen as often.  When cornered, then they will take every cheap attack they can.  They are hurting and have nothing to lose.  We have to keep pressuring them and close off the secret alleys that they work in.  Unfortunately, and unavoidably, we will get attacked along the way.

I don't think Bin Ladden will ever be caught but as you said Jeremy, he is just a figure head, we don't need to worry about him, its the idiots with bombs strapped to themselves that need to be caught.

When we invaded Iraq, a lot of pro-saddamists proudly proclaimed that we didn't know what we were getting into. That Saddam was a proud man, with a mighty military, and we were in for a long and bloody battle.

Obviously, the military folded like a house of cards in a matter of days, and Saddam proved himself the coward he is by going into hiding and leaving his country to be taken over. Many Iraqis expressed disbeleif in how quickly it all failed. I remember the information minister giving a press conference that they had beaten us back and killed thousands Americans. We were NOWHERE near Baghdad according to him, but of course we were literally minutes away from the very spot he was standing and had completely surrounded the city.

When we finally found Saddam, and pulled the haggared old man out of his hole in the ground, the reaction in Iraq seemed to be almost universal shock (at least from what we saw in American media, which is notoriously biased AGAINST our military).

When they spoke to the people you could hear the disappointment in their voice over what a coward Saddam turned out to be.

My point here, and I know I took a long route to get to it, is that the ONLY value Bin Laden would have to us right now is if we could catch him and parade him around as the poor, pathetic joke he is.

If we could break this image of the conquering hero that many in the middle east have of Bin Laden, THAT would go a long way toward ending some of these peoples idealistic view of him and his quest.

BUT, unfortunately, even when it comes to the worst terrorist on the globe, a man that has killed thousands of innocent people, we could NEVER do that. We would have to treat him with a high level of respect that would make him laugh and call us weak. It's very frustrating to try and fight a "nice" war.

I am with wef--when cornered they make cheap attacks.  What boggles my mind, if I understand correctly, the Curan--their bible--teaches peace.  I certainly don't understand the centuries of hatred.  Get over it.

The loophole in their beliefs is that God is viewed as all powerful, but not personal.  As long as Allah's will is the rule, there is be peace.  Violence is OK if necessary to enforce Allah's will.  It leaves a large subjective gap for believers to decide if violence is necessary or not.  That is why this war is difficult and its progress is hard to measure.  You never know when the next whack job is going to decide, "I'm Islamic, and I'm pissed.  If I act on my anger, it's justified!"

Unfortunately, they estimate that a any given time, ten percent of the world's one bilion Moslems are on jihad.  Do the math.

There is a book I've been wanting to read called Onward Muslim Soldiers: How Jihad Still Threatens America and the West by Robert Spencer.
I've heard this is one of the best insights explaining the radical Muslim threat to us.

Here is a portion of the review from Townhall book service.

This shocking new book by Robert Spencer reveals why jihad terrorism is still a potent threat to our nation and the world. Among its startling revelations: details about the numerous footholds that jihad warriors have already established right here in the U.S. (They've been an ominous presence in Europe for some time.) Onward Muslim Soldiers: How Jihad Still Threatens America and the West exposes radical Muslims' open contempt for our free society -- and their plans to destroy it.
