Baseball in April without a roof...

I was digging through some old paper archives today and came across this photo from exactly 28 years ago.

Minnesota just built a new stadium without a roof.  They'll be sooooooorry.  no.gif

Silly Twins. no.gif

There have been games in CO postponed due to snow in April. I always thought it would be good for the Rockies to play their first twoo weeks of the season on the road.

I have stopped going to opening day games. They either have been cold or wet. Or even both. Plus, it the last few years it has been hard to get tickets for opening day.

I dont think its worth it fuzzy. I'd much rather go to like the 2nd day. Not so much mayhem. really about those wanting to actually watch the game...

I also have had a hard time with opening day because of the timing. First, the afternoon games make it a little tough. And in the last number of years, I had had strict 4/15 tax deadlines.

The days of going to a game, hanging out in seats where there were only a few people around you are gone. Since the Phillies have been winning the last five years, it is always crowded and I believe most of the home games have been sold out the last three years.

Yeah, that's just it. I lump Opening Day with New Years Eve & St. Patricks Day. Just a bunch of drunks that wanna ruin everything.

If I recall correctly I think one year for opening day the Brewers gave out actual baseballs at the gates and then after a bad call on the field the drunks started throwing the baseballs onto the playing field by the hundreds for the rest of the game.

I remember listening to Eucker, he actually sounded embarrassed for the city.

Back before we were halfway decent opening day would be soldout a month in advance, around 53,000 fans, then the next game would draw about 9,000. The SECOND group were baseball fans.

Ah, the good old days of a team just trying to play hard, sucking and plenty of tickets were always available.

This always riles JR up so I HAVE to share it...

The crowds were so small, instead of the wave, everyone stood up and shared a little about themselves...ba Dum BUM! biggrin

Kind of hard to do the wave when 10,000 people are all scattered about the stadium.

When the crowds were smaller than that it was only a SLIGHT exaggeration.

Ladies and gentlemen, consider yourselves to be very fortunate.  You were here for Dylan's 10,000 recital of that line.

Some day, when he's in the Cliche Hall Of Fame you'll be able to tell your kids you saw him perform.  rofl.gif

I do kind of miss those days.  You could buy a ticket minutes before the game and have an entire section to yourself.

Or buy a $10 ticket and be able to sit anywhere between 1st and 3rd base.

Yep, wait til the third inning then move on down to the front row. Though you'd usually have to deal with dirty looks from the poor schlub that paid top dollar to actually get a seat in the front row. biggrin.gif

I spend my $10 on the AA club now. Not a bad seat. More entertainment. Cheaper prices for food (if you eat).

I wish we had an AA or AAA club around here. But all we've got is two single A teams and they're both pretty long drives from here (especially if Dylan is driving). smile.gif

Both the AA and AAA teams are a very doable drive. Maybe 30 minutes for the AA team and probably about 45 minutes for the AAA team.

I don't much care for going to the Royals games. The T-Bones on the other hand... those are fun games.

Yeah, there is a lot going on at a minor league game. There is something between every inning.

Plus minor league games, you get to see the future stars while they are playing to get to the MLB level.

Kind of cool to say "I saw them when..."

that was the last opening day I went to Riggs. I still have that ball. I bought it to work the next day to show everyone I was not one of the ball throwing morons. The whole thing was stupid...

That was pretty much the one that made me 100 percent sure I never needed to attend and opening day.

I really need to go catch an Indianapolis Indians game sometime. They're only AAA, but it might be fun to spend a day at the ballpark.
