Whats a favorite memory of yours involving Freeze Frame Radio?!?

Hey,
besides meeting the fun people here on the forum, do you have a specific fun FFR memory!?

I have plenty, one that sticks out now is a few years ago, Riggs would switch over the feed to pull from the Jazz 101 library for all day jazz programing on Sunday, before Jazz 101. He would do this usually about midnight on Saturday night.

I was home, 1/2 asleep on the couch, maybe about 1 in the morning with the jazz fest on. A fun ska song called "phoenix city" came on that I had never heard before. It kind of woke me up and I was wondering "wow what the hell was that?" Just as I was thinking it, as the song was ending, Riggs comes on and goes "wow what the hell was that?".

I was surprised he was in the studio THAT late, and was actually paying attention. That song became a staple of Jazz 101.smile

For me the personal highlight was the one I mentioned previously, watching people show up for the T-10 countdown and then watching them all bail immediately after I announced the number one song.

For so many of them they didn't need to hear the song, but they had to stay tuned in long enough to know what it was. smile.gif

It was just so cool to know that people around the country (even if it was only 15 or 20) were making that show an "appointment" show at night.

Another fond memory was the online Bingo game we played when I was on during the days.

I guess over-all that's always been my favorite aspect of FFR, the ability to communicate over the airwaves and get a response.

Perhaps the most exciting example of that was when we switched from the old html now playing & request pages to the PHP ones we use now. The difference was night and day. The old ones just had text, no images. Very boring stuff. The new ones added images, updated instantly, added a top 40 list, and several other programs.

I remember going on air and teasing a big announcement for days. Then the morning we unveiled it I teased it for a couple more hours. The forum was buzzing, we had a ton of people joining in the discussion. Then when I announced on air that a new request system was available it was met with nothing but positive comments. Very cool. Very fun.

I also really enjoyed the first day that I showed JD what I was doing.

We had a card party and I told him I had started a radio station. We spent about an hour later that night talking into the microphone in one room and then both running like little kids to the living room to hear ourselves on the stereo (there was about a 15 second delay).

JD asked if I'd mind if he did a jazz show and I said that would be great. Shortly after the holidays he showed up on my porch on a Sunday night with a stack of about 15 CD's and an ear to ear smile on his face.

Those early shows he was choosing from a mighty small selection.

Aw man, there's so many.

I remember when I first started "paying" for FFR. I was still using dialup, and we were still on Live365. JR had been teasing me about adding the low bandwidth stream, but hadn't added it yet. I promised to become a Live365 VIP, which the station owners would get a tiny little kickback from, if he got it. One weekend when he mentioned it again, I requested Jane's Getting Serious, just because I wouldn't be able to hear it. (That was back during Jane's heyday.)

Of course, the cookout will always stand out in my mind. I can't hear "We Are the World," without hearing JR and JD sing along. I thought it was so cool that we could all get together and do the same thing, all over the country.

Mine would have to be the very first time I tuned in for JD's shows.  I remember thinking how awesome I thought Underground 80s was.....I was hearing music I hadn't heard in years along with some tunes I had never heard before.

Then Jazz 101 started; I wasn't sure if it would be a show I'd like because I wasn't very familiar with Jazz.  Even though he mixed in some Soul, Funk, and Blues, it was the Jazz music that I was most curious about.  I remember thinking "Wow, this stuff is pretty good.  Who IS that??"  Since I was still relatively new to FFR I didn't feel comfortable enough yet to come right out and ask JD who it was, but  I knew after tuning in the first time I'd be back the following week because I had to find out more about this genre of music called Jazz. smile

Then College Daze began.  At first it was rockin' out and my ears were very happy.  But then something odd happened.....there was yodeling, there was African drumming, there was this noise that I later learned was known as Sun Ra (hit mute, sorry Mz!!), and there was a bunch of other weird stuff being played.  At first I thought this was a show to drive listeners AWAY at the end of the evening, but then the name of the show started to make sense to me.  College Daze.......it was like being at a party with a bunch of drunken or doped up college kids who brought their music collection with them to find out who had the strangest collection of music.  It was weird, it was strange, but it was FUN!!! And I quickly became a fan of College Daze!! laughing.gifbiggrinbiggrin

And of course there was JR.  The owner of FFR.  He sought me out over on Myspace and sent me an email personally inviting me to drop by and check out his radio station.  He explained the format, and said there was no pressure to tune in but he thought I'd like what I'd hear.  I was blown away by his email!  And I thought to myself "How many other radio station owners/DJs would take the time to browse Myspace and send out a personal invitation to try out their radio station???  NONE!!!"  It was a bold and gutsy move on JR's part, and I liked that right away...it intrigued me!! smilebiggrinbiggrin

I always enjoyed our Theme Thursdays.  It was fun to see everyone playing along and a queue getting longer and longer and longer.

I think Lady Strange was my favorite part of FFR.  Her tidbits of knowledge are always appreciated.  I like hearing about all of her touches with the rockers too.  I still get the biggest kick every time I hear Peter Tork giving Tennessee Gal a personal shout out.

I loved Web Guys little boy's slogan too,  "FFR Rocks Dude".

Another favorite memory of mine is the site where we had posted the pictures of our travels with the penguin.  Mine went to Vegas, Hoover Dam, and NYC.

Hmmm, its hard to pick one.

A big one is the first night I listened to FFR.

My son was little and we were having trouble getting him to go to bed. We had to sit with him until he'd fall asleep. We were working on gradually moving further and further away from him each night.

On one particular night, I was sitting on the floor in our hall just to where my son could see me, with my laptop, headphones, and browsing Live365. I was looking at 80's stations and found this one called "Freeze Frame Radio". I tuned in and listed for a bit. Pretty soon, this Canadian-sounding guy came on and said "Check out our request system at freezeframeradio.com". So I did. Shortly after that, six of my personal requests were playing! I was hooked. smile.gif

Next, it has to be the cookouts. JR and JD bantering on air, a bunch of us in the chat room chatting, Woo drunk, and I was recording it all. Then I had a lot of fun cutting and pasting clips together trying to come up with something good.

Thanks for the memories, Freeze-Frame. smile.gif

While I've missed more theme days than I've been a part of, I too really enjoy them and love to participate in them. nod.gifsmile

The first time I tuned in and saw someone request Survivor's "First Night."  Wow!  (The 'someone' was Riggs.)

Here are a few off the top of my head:

After having heard Riggs say we were all welcome to send in our own bumpers, actually having a few official rockstar Station IDs collected, edited and burned onto a CD-- Actually packing them up with a little penguin "To/From" gift label and getting them ready to go out in the mail - I was really excited for the surprise!

When Web took pictures of the wild bunny in his yard and posted them for my enjoyment.

The first time I saw someone OTHER THAN ME request a Hanson song. laughing.gif

Being at home hearing Riggs & JD doing my "10 Degrees" show, and having them talk over the part I wrote about listening for, then hearing them both say, "I didn't hear it." I was like " Dorks! "

Seeing the Jim Steinman stuff on the request list.

The way we all kicked ass working the petitions etc. when the RIAA was trying to destroy Internet radio.

When Darlene would give me a "worship".  That always made me smile!  laughing.gif

Aww, thanks!  blush.gif  How very sweet.  <HUGS>

Oh yeah - LOVE the vacation photos!  (Though it drove my husband a little nuts that we came home with more Hawaii pictures of the penguin than of us  hmm.gif)

Probably my favorite memory was right at the beginning of when I started listening to FFR while working Katrina recovery... getting to chat with folks while working all those long hours at the office. Listening to the music while I was pretending to listen to Pambo's sup make an idiot of herself... requesting a bunch of songs in the wee small hours of the morning... it was great. I felt right at home. smile.gif
