You neglected to fill in the blank JD?!?!

Anyway, first you would have to change the law because I was not born in the US and I am only a naturalized citizen. I think that Arnold is pushing to change that! Then the world would have to get past the fact that I am a woman. But I think that Hilary or Elizabeth Dole may be trying to change that... Finally I would do nothing! I majored in Political Science and realize the only real power that the President has is to push different agendas to the forefront and maintain a positive position in the foreign community. Otherwise, he is pretty powerless. I believe the Social Security is in grave danger, I think that the government needs to back out of our lives more and I believe that our criminal justice system needs a major revamping!

If I were president I would immediately start the process of having myself impeached.

I like how you think dave.  If I were President I would competley change the welfare and public assistance system.  I would do what Australia, Canada, Mexico and many other countries do, if a person is born here they are not automatically a citizen.  If and only if one or both of the parents are citizens.  I was in Mexico and needed health care, they took care of me in only a trioge (sp) manner and then made arrangements to ship me accross the border, but not before my family paid handsomely to get me released.  No benefits for non US citizens and then they have to work for it.  Windows can be cleaned, sidewalks swept.  Grafitti cleaned, envelopes addressed, floors mopped. Etc.  Why pay a janitorial service on the govt payroll when it is full of capable people that can do it.  I say with gritted teeth because the doctors have told me that I should not be doing half of what I am doing because of my back.  But I refuse to be a victim  I push myself as hard and fast than most of my 'well' collegues.  It does not matter how much pain I am in.  Social Security was never meant to be a retirement plan.

I just stopped typing to take a breath and realize I have given away my politics--and before anyone attacks me, I married and illegal immigrant and paid over 15,000 to bring her in legally to get a green card, then another 25,000 in lawyers to make her naturalized, so I am not predjudiced against immigrants.  One of my assistants is a Mexican National.

Off the soap box for now, I may be in more trouble thant I know.  And yes Dave, Bill is still a liar and a cheat.  Can I lie under oath with no penalty.  Go ahead and impeach me I still won't leave office.  Watch me lose the breifecase with the secret neuclear codes and say ooopps.

Watch while I send a staff of Secret Service Guards from the Caymans to Washington DC to retrieve a notebook that my irresponsible teenage daughter forgot to complete an assignment.  Watch my wife misuse and treat like sh** the staff around her.  How in the world Hillary pulls this off to the delight of......again  better stop now.

Be kind to me please my friends in Wisconsin.  I am worried and upset.  If you really want to let me have it would it help to say that I am full of Vicodin this morning to rid my back pain?  My mind is not where it should be.

I'm glad the we all agree that Clinton sucks.

I don't think that I would ever be president because I'm not the political type. I could say something llike make national ice cream day - didn't Bush make a national popcorn day?

Anyway, I do have a citizen story. (not as good as Cp's)
I was dating someone and he broke up w/ me. I didn't understand why. And he explained to me that he had to get married to get citizenship. He was entering into an agreement w/ this woman. She would be his wife and he would pay for certain things for her. So now my qualifications have changed for a boyfriend. I added citizen to the list.

Wow--I have heard of that star.  I can tell you that the Gov't did send people out to my house unannounced to make sure my wife was actually living with me--for the first two years.

I guess that is where I was going with this thread- it could be politcal, otherwise not so much so.

For me, If I WERE PRESIDENT, there would be a national across the board manditory PAID lunch hour and 1/2 for every full time worker. Think about how much more business would be able to be conducted during the day! More people having a chance to go out for a "sit down" lunch, enjoy it, not race through it. Perhaps get some shopping done, stop by the bank, post office etc. So much more money would be out and about during the business day. Tax breaks to the corporations to help alleviate the cost of this; with the added bonus of happier, more productive workers not "trapped" in their cubes all day- plus the local sales taxes would help to boost local economies, perhaps freeing up some level of federal and state subsidy money.......hmmmmmmm........

i know i am hopelessly out numbered by red staters, but i liked clinton.  a lot. me an mine did well during those 8 years..   a long while ago i wrote this to a friend after some bad war story.

It is meant to be a funny. but a lot of rules below do at least begin with my own policies.

I would need to have a bit more control then a president...   call this.... if i were running the US as an absolute power...

I am also apologizing in advance for any thing that offends. (and i am sure it will, but remember i am just a lone blue stater...  so don't eat me alive)

so take a tranq and see what it would be like if the junkie ruled the world.....

#1.  end the war.  End it now.  Call it Double U sucks folley. In
fact, bring everyone back.   Let the world fend for itself.

#2.  take 1/4 of the military budget and put it towards alterate
power supports, 1/4 toward border control, 1/4 towards security
weapons (in case we do get bombed) and 1/4 toward increasing
  terrorist security policies.

#3. Kill China. Increase tariffs on incoming Chinese goods, place a
tax on any company that out sources to foreign countries,  have the top
financial advisors figure out a way to get china to stop balancing
  its dollar with ours.

#4. Make Lobbying Illegal. No more big bucks choosing the policies
and practices our government will spend its money on.  All lobbyists
are immediately relocated to poor communities to use their big brains
to figure out what really needs to be done.

#5.  Fix the tax situation.   Kill the tax cuts to the Rich. Reduce
the tax credits to the poor people who have too many children and consider this a way of life.   Reduce Welfare and make an agreement with Walmart. (with all my China
Policies, they will have no choice but to follow my plans... heh heh heh)
Walmart will only be able to hire welfare people.   For this they will get a
tax credit on all China product they purchase. And the government will help subsidize day care for walmart.

#6.  Personally kill Cablevision. I would seize all their big houses
on long Island and make them low income training facility for walmart
employees. Cablevision big bosses that have old people eating catfood
so they can afford cable to watch vanna white turn the letters, are
locked in a room with nothing but pork rinds and heehaw reruns until their
  minds snap.

#7. Place massive taxes on fast food that is bad for you so that the
dollar menu at mc donalds only has apples yogart and salad on it. Use
the fast food tax money open fat farms for people to go away for a couple
  months.

#8. Ramp up old sparky and let the death rows get cleaned out.  No
more milking.  No more television in prison. They can have library books
and mandatory schooling.   Releases will not only depend on time served
but also with them being able to be a successful member of society.
(mayhap I will work out a deal with Jiffy Lube and Taco Bell to only
  hire criminals)

#9. make English the official language of the US.  Make Gay Marriage
Legal, Make Suicide Legal, Make Drugs Legal (but you can only do them
in your own house, and if you fall apart and end up on welfare, you will
be working at walmart the rest of your life)  if you get  caught driving
or endangering others in anyway you get a ride on sparky)  All murderers
if convicted get a ride on sparky.   No more life in prison for anyone.
Child molesters get dropped in a hole in the ground in prison
basements after their privates were cut off with no pain meds or antibiodics.
They get water and food dropped at them from above and if they don't
die before their sentence is up (and in my rulings it would be a long
long long time) they can join the regular prison inmates and learn a
skill or enter a mental hospital (whichever works best)

#10.  Get rid of all illegal immigrants, those welfare people who
can't seem to get it together enough to work at walmart, can have an
alternative and go pick oranges and cotton.   I wonder if I would have
enough man power to secure an entire state if I used 1/4 of the
military to do it.    I would have them all line up with their paperwork.  If they didn't have paperwork, they ended up on a truck.     Texas and Florida and California might be
tough... might need to relocate some more of my army for those big
  basttards,...

MJ-- you and I are not that far apart.  I have thought about writing a book about Wal-Mart.  I have been inside its corporate doors and met with buyers, Vice Presidents and listened to speeches by the Chairman and President in their conference room.  But, as long as I am under this current contract I have to keep my mouth shut.  Some of what I can tell you would make you never grace the doors again.

Curious though, what prompts your disgust with Wal-Mart?

there are so many reasons....

#1 Idon't like walmart.  i don't like that evil happy face, i don't like going in the store, it is alway messy and smells like the circus and is always packed. it is unpleasant.  i don't even like their lines. or those bags that swing around.

#2. it knocked out all the other stores.   no more caldor's or bradlees, or ames, kmart is still dragging around on its knees although more than 1/2 of them closed..   all we have are walmarts... and they are everywhere, 10 years ago we in the north didn't know what a walmart was.   now there are at least 10 within a 30 minute drive of my house.... it is disgusting.  thankfully in the last year or 2 we have gotten targets, which i like more, but walmart still sells things so cheaply that it is hard for me not to go....

#3. when the economy turned in 2001 we had huge lay offs where i work now..   they laid off almost 20 people from my department and some of them had been 30 year employees.... they kept only 3 of us.  i had wished they had laid me off instead of some of these other people who were in their late 50's and were seeing retirement in the not to distant future.  One of the worst lay offs was my friend Susie.... she was there 27 years or something like that...  since the economy was so bad around here she ended up having to take a job at walmart.  her husband was an army vetern and was ill and couldn't work...   it was totally ironic, she lost her job due to relocation to china at our company and then went to work for a company that made their rise to megamart fame by buying cheap foreign goods)

we have transferred way too much of our business to other countries (especially china, my company used to have over 1200 employees in Connecticut, now we have around 100, we have a brand new shenzhen plant though, with over 1400 employees and our stock is doing fantastic. great huh?)

MJ--This much I can say.  My family owned a factory here in the US.  We because the Worlds largest producer of the Pouf sponges--you know the netted things you squirt the liquid soap on and use in the shower.  In fact if you purchased one at Wal-Mart it is almost guranteed to be one of ours.  September 11th just about killed our company.  We went from a staff of 350 US employees and were faced with some very serious problems.  There only became two options, move the manufactruing to China or Mexico.  We moved it to Mexico and maintained a US Staff of 30.  Because every one elses business was bad we were soon reduced to 10 US employees.  This whole time I had sleepless nights because of the brutal decisions I had to make as an owner and how many lives were effected by the stroke of my pen.

We continued to hold on, but then were down to five US employees, not including my family.  It was just so difficult so we announced that we would sell.  We did not make a dime off the sale of the company as we wanted out from the burden so bad.  I did enter into a one year contract with the company that purchased us and continue to work with Wal-Mart on a very intricate level.  When my contract is done I am going to another venture and cannot wait to tell what really goes on behind those walls.  I may have already said too much.  But of course all of this is my opinion.

these days, i think that our foreign business policies will kill us as a country... i think of the war between the north and the south and remember how the south suffered because they didn't have the industry we did in the north...   i worry that if something like a war between america and china occured, we would be in a very sorry state.   Many of the skilled workers are getting old and are not being replaced...

scary thoughts...

MJ, did you know that most of the produce you buy now comes from Mexico and Central and South America?  We as americans are literally shopping our way to the unemployment lines.

yes, we have a plant down in Nogales and when the produce season comes we always have trouble, not only with long lines at the border, but also with workers who leave to work the harvest.

just another perk of moving your business out of the us.

Awwwwwwwwwwww MJ,

I gotta stay out of this thread completely now. I respect your opinons and the opinions of everyone else, but could not disagree with you more on the war.

I won't even get started on Clinton, except to say that I beleive history will prove him to be among the worst presidents this country has ever seen. He did some good things, the beginnings of welfare reform among them. But man did he do some crappy things in office, and I'm not talking about Monica Lewinsky. His greatest accomplishment was the boom in the economy, but in reality that was just a bubble that he had very little to do with, and just before he left that bubble started to burst.

As for welfare, I'm FINALLY reading a book I've wanted to get for some time. It's called AMERICAN DREAM and it follows three Milwaukee women for 7 years during the start of the states Welfare To Work program.

It is absolutely frightening how the old system was abused. Of course, it's still abused, but not nearly to the same extent.

If you truly follow the pattern JD, you will see that the boom in the economy had nothing to do with Clinton.  It was the aftermath of the Regan/Bush years.  by the end of the clinton term his fiscal irresponsibility made it all come crashing down.  But he left office just in time for the next Bush to take the heat.  You watch, whether a republican or Democrat is elected next term, there will be a boon in the economy if we continue with George W's plan, but he will get no credit for it.  Neither will Greenspan.  What is unimaginable to me is how tolerant this country has become of people like Clinton.  Look at Gary Hart.  He got seen a few years ago with someone other than his wife and the country chased him out of the lead of his Presidency campaign.  Look at Nixon--there was a time when we demanded better.

The surest way for evil to tripumph is for decent honest men to do nothing.

I am very fortunate in many ways.  My family is very old.  I have ancestors that came accross in the Mayflower and signed the Mayflower Compact.  I have a kin that signed the Declaration of Independance.  My family fought in the revolutionary war, the war of 1812, the civil war (for the north), world war one, two, Korea and Viet Nam.  I have a cousin in Iraq.  We have not heard from him in months.  He is special forces and his specialty is bombs.  His missions are so top secret that not even his wife can communicate with him or he with her.

I am proud to be an American and defend her still today.  OK off the soapbox again.  I just get uptight when anyone bashes the military.  Freedom is not free.  People paid a very serious price so that we may enjoy what we have.

i certainly didn't mean to sound like i was bashing the military, if that was the case then i apologize.

My grandfather fought in WWII and i had several uncles in the Vietnam War. My brother was in the Army as well.

Supporting the people in the Military and Supporting the People who make the decisions for the military can be seperate in my mind.

I am very proud of the military people in my family.

You know, along those lines, they announced this week that the national debt will be cut nearly by 1/3'rd after what the liberal press called a "surprising" increase in tax revenue last year.

DUH!

Reagan knew, and Bush knew it. You lower taxes (EVEN WHEN YOU'RE AT WAR), companies invest in equipment and people, workers have more spending money, tax collections INCREASE.

I haven't seen the actual numbers yet on the decrease, but I'm very excited to get the scoop on this one.

MJ--my frustration is not directed to you and I sincerely apologize if it seemed that way.  I am embarrassed that, that is how my message was perceived.  Please accept my apology.  The frustration I have is one in general and certainly not directed to you.  Although I do find it hard living in California when I have such conservative veiws.  Again MJ, I am so sorry that is how I portrayed my message.

I want to comment about welfare. Being a former welfare recipient I speak from experience. I am not proud of it, but it got me where I am today. I was 22 with a 1 year old and his father and I were not getting along, so I decided that I wanted to split up. Well that did not go to well and he decides that he is going to kill me. After six weeks of running and being stalked, he finally slipped up and was sent to prison for six years. In the meantime I was alone and not working. I had no one to turn to, but the government. My landlady agreed to let me stay rent free until I could get on my feet. I went and applied for welfare. I received $159 in cash a month and about 200 in food stamps. I had a beater car and had to still make up the rest of my rent, my insurance and gas and my electric bills, oh yeah and diapers and daycare. I had to work to receive this. I immediately enrolled in college and took a job. After two years, I started to get help with daycare. Well needless to say six years later I had two associate degrees and one bachelor's degree with a 4.0 GPA straight across the board. ( Sorry I had to brag, but I worked very hard!) I was as poor as poor could be, but I took out thousands of dollars in student loans to help with expenses. And now (that was 1994-2000) I have 20000+ in student loans and I have to pay back all of the welfare assistance. Also, I never would have had a second child. I know it was my own fault for ending up pregnant with no real way to take care of my family, but things happen. My son's father is biploar and completely flipped out. Unforeseen things do happen. So next time you think that people are living off welfare, remember that is not living!

Ok off my soap box now!

Wow Ruby, you and I have to have an IM conversation sometime, I find that story very interesting.

That's why I wanted to read this book so badly, because I know there's a lot more involved.

But YOU were not a problem welfare recipient it doesn't sound like. In fact, the system was there for you and you sound like you used it exactly as it was intended.

I'm talking about welfare abuse, and I have a history of that in my own family.

Ruby:  that is marvelous and that is what the system is there to do.  You used it wisely and put yourself into debt getting an education.  I have a problem with generations of welfare families.  We had a story here in the local news too about Mexican nationals that get welfare and food stamps merely by setting up a PO Box accross the border.  The come over once a week, collect their checks buy the food, cash the checks and head back accross the border.  That kind of abuse must stop.

I owe you an apology too.  I became too general in my statements.  Part of this disgust is an Aunt of mine, here in California.  She is living off Welfare, foodstamps and whatever govtt assistance she can.  She is only 50, healthy and very capable of working or going to school.  She does neither.  That is the abuse I refer.

Again, open mouth and insert foot--I did the same thing with MJ.  Please accept my apology.

No need, to apologize, I know that there is abuse, but believe me they do not give enough money  for anyone to "live" off of! Also, I do take responsiblity for my own actions, I am glad that the gov was there!
