Cigarette, Cigarrette

I am a former smoker- personally now, I find it absolutely disgusting. BUT, in being a former smoker, I completely understand how enjoyable a cigarette is, especially after a couple of drinks. Several states are gearing up legislation to end smoking in bars. The thought is to protect workers and patrons from the hazards of second hand smoke. What do you think?

as states and feds wont flat out ban tobacco , this is another way to do it .soon you'll be able to smoke at home only and only if no kids are in the house. I just wish it would have been illegal 25 years ago .  I was one of those "well there legal and so and so smokes how bad can it be" guys. And the military selling them for 2.50 a carton held some sway to .    I smoke but i've never smoked in a restaurant out of courtesy ,  in florida its now illegal to smoke in bars and resturants , the chain places like t.g.i.f.s and applebees has seen an increase in buisness but the mom n pop bars are dying fast , as for the workers im 50-50 , dont like your job , then quit ,smokeing is still legal !  other side- i dont much care for an unhealthy work place.

I am a non smoker but have voted that you should be able to smoke in bars, my theory is, that you go to bars to drink and smoke and enjoy yourself, lets face it, drinking is just as harmful to your body, but there not gonna ban that are they, I know smoking affects other prople too thru passive smoking but I think it would be wrong to ban it in bars.

former smoker here too.
Dave, I thought it was just banned in bars that served food.  some bars you can smoke in.

anyway, you should totally be able to smoke when you drink.  that is part of the bar experience - coming home and smelling like smoke.  I agree w/ Ultimo.

I've never been a smoker but I still vote no on the ban. Myself, I can't stand to be in a smoke filled room, but I think the bar owners should be able to decide.

I'm a non-smoker, and voted no on the ban as well.  I agree that smoking in restuarants should be banned, but in a bar, it should be up to the owner.

I am a non-smoker, but the choice should be made by the owners. I would love to be able to go to a bar/restuarant without the smoke, as I have a tough time with it. But I also understand that it is an individual's choice. I probably would be okay if there just weren't smoke when I was trying to eat. Even if there is a non-smoking section, it nevers really seems to be non-smoking.

I'm a non-smoker thanks to my dad being one for a long time (no longer).  I would love to see them banned because there is next to no benefit to the habit and a mountain of bad effects.  That being said, I don't think a ban will come about.  Too much money involved, too much political push.

I don't know abouta nationwide ban, but they're popping up in cities everywhere.  In the town where I live, there's no smoking inside any public place, including bars, or any closer than 20 feet from the entrance.  And they're talking about a similar ban in Indianapolis.

There is a bar by my house that chooses to be smoke free. It is pleasant! A big change from the cigar bar craze of the mid-1990's where you couldn't see an inch in front of your face!

For months they have been talking about it in Philadelphia. There was supposed to be a vote by the city council, but it was put on hold. If it were to happen here, there are going to be a lot of angry patrons and owners.

People were angry at first, but they got over it pretty fast.  It is nice being able to go to a bar and breathe.  The 20ft rule gets ignored a lot, and downtown it's impossible to follow (that would put you in the middle of the road!).  At the same time, there's more people hanging around outside of bars smoking when you're walking anywhere, and that can be kinda scary walking downtown at night.

in connecticut, we already have no smoking allowed in restaurants and bars....  state law.

now you have a cloud of smoke in front of all the bars as the people stand outside in huddled groups.

some guy was trying to get around it by putting in a retractable roof and then calling it a patio.

CT has all the good for you laws... you have to wear a seatbelt... no cell phone while driving... no booze on a sunday....

I can think of only 2 good for you laws that weren't passed... one was the one about removing all the junk food machines from the schools and the other is the motorcycle helmet law.

I do not believe in helmet or seatbelt laws.  It's called natural selection.

I echo fuzzy's comments.  Let the consumer choose.  And I am a former smoker-non filter.  I could not stand filters, and the lights?.  Might have well as lit a tampon.

Having a smoking section in a restaurant is like having a peeing area in a pool.

Former smoker too! I think we have all wised up! Oh that reminds me that is another pet peeve... pregnant women who smoke!

Let it alone, let it stay in the bars. People are at risk for a lot more that just cigarettes at a bar. Less government intrusion all the way! Let us kill ourselves!
