I know I'm probably behind everyone else seeing this movie. I just saw it last night. There seem to be 2 groups, people who loved it and people who didn't. I was wondering what everyone here thought of it.
I'm in the didn't care for it crowd. I'm still having a hard time suspending disbelief with the live action cgi movies, and the switch from the non-cgi base of operations to the all cgi forest made it worse.
But I could forgive that if the story was compelling. Instead, I thought it was an overdone folk story, and therefore predictable. The characters were caricatures. It lacked the complexity to keep me interested.
But my review may be biased. I had heard the Pocahontas connection before seeing the movie, although I think I still would've been bored with the lack of character development. And our ex-roomie loves Avatar, so he bought it and brought it over for us to watch. And narrated the whole thing for us. "Oh, you're going to love the helicopters [gives a full description of what they look like]." "Look at that. They do that because..." Yes, I can see that, isn't that what the MOVIE is supposed to be telling me?
At any rate, I think this movie would be best for teenagers or older kids. I give it the, "watch it on Netflix instant queue just so you can say you've seen it" rating. It's not horrible, but it really doesn't live up to the hype. The CGI is pretty good, so it is worth watching just for the visual effects.
I haven't seen it yet and it's not really high on my list of "must see" movies. Yesterday my girls and I rented some movies and I asked them if they wanted to watch it, but they both said no. I still might rent it just to see for myself if it's any good or not.
Last night we watched "The Blind Side", "Taking Woodstock", "The Fourth Kind" and "2012". Blind Side was good, Taking Woodstock was so-so. Fourth Kind is a docudrama about alien visitations/abductions in Nome, Alaska....wasn't too bad, kinda weird, and leaves it up to the viewer to decide if you believe it's true or not. I thought 2012 was very similar to Day After Tomorrow, only with better special effects. It bothered my youngest daughter; she asked me if the Mayan calendar was right and world-wide destruction was really going to happen in 2 years. Hard to answer that one.
We just got around to watching it this weekend, too. Agreeing with everything MZ says...
I fell asleep about the time the main character was choosing his flying horsey thingy, and then woke back up about the time Anna Lucia from Lost was moving the shack further into the mountains...
I really love science fiction / fantasy, but didn't feel like I missed anything while I was asleep.

Haven't seen it yet. I didn't make it to the theater when it was there in 3-D, which I was told was the coolest part of the movie. Since I don't get that effect, I'm not in a hurry.
