Bored? Try Google Earth

It's a file you have to download and install but it's really neat. It's satellite images and you can fly to where you want to go then zoom in for a closer look. I see that my friend in Lincoln was home when the image was taken. I see his van in the drive way.

You have to download and install a file and it needs a fairly quick internet connection but it's darn cool!

I must say, I am MOST impressed with the fine work you're getting done down there in the cellar.

I guess without the constant parties and what not you can actually get down to some serious business in the basement huh?

Me too, I will call it work to stay out of the chaos that has enveloped my house.  And everyone know to leave me alone when I am in the office., except my kids.  They never listen to me.

I would show you the roof of my house, but the resolution is not good at all over our town. It looks like only the bigger cities are at high-res. About all you can really make out around our area are center pivots.

If you look up:
"2001 Burnham St Lincoln, NE"
That house with the green roof is where we lived about 11 years ago. That was the first house we owned.

These Google guys are pretty darned clever.

My house is low res too- like the really focused on the industrial area of Milwaukee and didn't really photograph the outlying areas yet!

Oh, that's neat . . . go to "Omaha, NE" then zoom out and go towards West Omaha. There are some small fluffy clouds making shadows over the city.

I spent all night playing with that darn Google Earth.

I checked out the Bullock hotel in SD, I checked out my old apartments, I checked out some stuff in downtown milwaukee, I retraced my entire daily courier route!

What a time waster!

I have a friend who works for a major defense contractor in Tennessee. I asked him once how good the military spy satellites are. He said that this is unconfirmed rumor around where he works, but the belief is that if you threw a quarter out on your driveway, they could tell if it was heads or tails.

O.K., I'm hooked.  Here's some relief to the "Big Brother" fears.  The pictures they show are at least three to four years old.  I looked for the house we just moved from in December, and it showed it when it was still being built.  It also showed Willow Creek Church before the new building was started.  We're not being shown right now.  I'm sure somebody is watching, but Google isn't putting it out to the general public.


I like my avatar a lot more now!

It is not really live is it?  I looked up my house again, and it shows my swing set in the place it was several months ago, and I am missing some palm trees I had planted recently.

It must depend on the area, because the limestone quarry that expanded last year is shown, and it would be obvious if that wasn't there.

Oh . . . no, it's not live. I'm sure that the photos are in a constant state of updating. It couldn't be live or JD couldn't have stayed up all night looking at his house. I assume anyway that he wouldn't stay up all night looking at pictures of a dark earth. Who knows?

I suspect that gradually over time even the little towns like ours will eventually be updated to a much higher resolution.

My parents house is covered in trees too.  This proves one thing to me.  When I buy my own house, make sure I have plenty of trees!

I like the feature from when you jump from one area to another. Last night I jumped from my house to where we stayed in New Orleans, and the way it scanned the US from point A to point B over that distance was COOOOOOLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
