First, I'd put $100,000 in a savings account and just keep it there. If I need to tap into it, then that means it's time to stop spending. If I don't, then my sister and neices and nephews get it when my husband and I pass away. Second, I'd invest another $100,000 because I never want to tap into the savings. Third, I'd pay off all my debts and make some improvements to my car. I don't think I'd buy a new one yet. Fourth, I'd buy a historic mansion in Key West and ask my dad and stepmom to run it and keep most of the proceeds. And pay off all of their debts. Fifth, I would build my dream home somewhere in the Keys or Caribbean. I'd keep my job, but switch to part time, and it would be a requirement that I could work from home or a laptop from whereever I may be.
I too would help others and bank some of my savings. I agree about the need to set aside a large chunk. I would quit my job- after I trained my replacement and then I would turn to volunteer work, mainly in the domestic violence area. I would spend every other penny trying to help my mother walk or at least turn the page of a book or change the tv channel. I used to have different dreams of traveling, shopping, etc.. which I would still try to do, but her accident has changed my plans/ daydreams.
Winning the lottery needs to be clarified. If you win $100, $1,000 or $10,000 it won't get you far. I have dreams of winning a big powerball jackpot. And after taxes still have millions and millions of dollars. Then I pay off everything I need to. Then we have a big themed party at my house - it will be a 'bill paying party'. I will take care of my family, share with my friends, and donate to causes. I have always wanted to travel throughout Europe. Then I would have my big dream house built. After settling down with all of that, I have always wanted my own bar and resturant. That will be where I spend my time.
Gee, I guess I haven't spent too much time thinking about this, now have I?

Stop trying to be what you see. Be what you ought to be.
I'm with fuzzy. I would pay of my house and all debt, then pay off my mom's house and get it fixed up. Build a house in Wisconsin on some property I own--would like to enjoy the summers there. I would probably pay off all my siblings houses, and start an education fund for my kids. then party, party party. I would fly all ffr listeners here to the desert for one big brawl.
My super lotto ticket is sitting right next to me as we speak. Tonight's drawing is 41 million. I selected cash value so after taxes It would probably be around 10 million. I could live off that.
We would take care of the folks. Except for my dad. When he and mom got divorced he told mom he was going to help me with college. Well that didn't happen. So he gets the same from me. We talked about buying a lot of land and building a complex with homes for the folks, brothers and sisters with a central building for parties and family events. Then we would take care of college for all the nieces and nephews and give them a little nest egg to get their lives started. I want to throw a huge party for all my friends and bring in a big name band for entertainment. Right now it would be Huey Lewis and the News. I'd probably buy a house in Ft. Myers since I'll be retired I need somewhere to go relax when I feeled stressed. Then what I really want to do. At Christmas I would like to go around town and drop gold coins into the Salvation Army buckets. Those gold coins that are worth like $1000 a piece. I'd do that for like $50,000 each Christmas for years to come. That would be fun.
ray--reconsider the florida thing. too humid and too much bad weather.
our desert southwest is better, and we only have earthquakes. I laughed one time when my mother was here and we had an earthquake. It was a really small one and just rattled the house. She was totaly freaked. I just sat there. The last one we had shook the house pretty good. We were really close to the epicenter and the house literally jumped. I then watched it sway back and forth. The water got tosssed out of the pool. I just laid there in bed waiting for it to be over. It is alarming when it shakes like that, but I would rather have that then the horrid T-Storms, tornadoes and hurricanes.
i need to be the megga buck winner for mine to work , after my trip to the dentist , (ka-ching) i'd visit all the forum members and see what they needed, a new mike for MR. Riggs , maybe Ray could use some for his other daughters college tuition , donate to MZ.'s charity , new workshop for Web , shoes for Star , stuff like that . THEN the fun begins ! sponser a nascar truck ! put a FFR logo on the hood and a ferret on the doors and deck lid ! they go with my new company -THE KOTO ! it would be for the kids , hats jackets , coloring books etc. if the kids parents couldn't afford it , they get it for free ! i'd get orange co. choppers to build a custom bike with a side car and give it to the Victory Junction Camp (run by the Petty family) the side car would have pics of ferrets on it ! traveling the truck circuit i'd get to see a lot of neat places , meet a bunch of people , eat some good food, pizza in chi-town, bbq in kc , ya man ! I also would build /buy 2 small cabins on a lake or river in TENN. 1 is for me , the other is for a select group of people who know the key is under the flower pot on the back porch. i'd also build my veternarian a new office / lab. (he's a great guy ) and i'd set up a fund to send a kid to vet. school . i would also buy a pathfinder , V-6 but not bad on gas .
Lets suppose someone wins & nets $1,000,000 after all the absurd taxes. To invest this amount and demand a 10% annual return would be a conservative, safe & VERY feasible request. This would = $100,000 a year.
If one were to be able to live a middle-class lifestyle on $50,000 a year- nice home, 2 good cars, $ for the college tuition for kids, 1 good vacation a year, and money put into an IRA or 401k- which is do-able in the midwes- this leaves $50,000 a year to do good. And in doing good, the tax write-off would most likely nearly compensate for the initial tax hit on your earnings over a period of time! AND YOU HAVE NOT EVEN TOUCHED YOUR $1,000,000!!!!!!
My $50,000 would go towards the Make-A-Wish Foundation, or an organization like Mz works for......kids.....take care of the little kids.

Dave- I can see the new commercials now....Are you going to race the ferret? Everyone wants to see the ferret race. Ferrets steal a truck and take out Darrell Waltrip. Oh the possibilities.
LOL , Yes it would be a ton of fun , it's what I think about every Saturday night starting about 9:45 pm. and then stop about 10:01 pm . sigh , oneday ....
If I won the lottery I would buy about 10,000 acres in South Dakota, near the base of the black hills.
Land & homes are ridiculously cheap there, so I'd buy up as much as I could and offer free housing to any friends or relatives that were interested.
I would then put several million into the highest interest investment account I could, so that the interest generated every year would be enough to live off of.
Of course I'd set the station up to handle about a million streams, and then I would do a massive advertising campaign across the country to bring in the listeners, perhaps even resorting to a stunt like hiring a famous DJ, perhaps Ryan Seacrest, to host a four hour weekly countdown exclusively on Freeze-Frame Radio. In a fairly short time we would become THE hippest place to tune in, basically the nations station.
Once we had that kind of audience the station we would use the opportunity to do as much good as possible while still providing a fun listening experience for the audience (by doing as much good as possible I mean helping to raise awareness and funding for the important issues of our time).
Oh yeah, I'd also meet, marry and have children with country singer Chely Wright, who would suddenly be interested in me because she'd finally realize I exist and be intrigued by the idea of being able to break all her new singles on the hottest new station in the nation.
Lets see, did I leave anything out? OH YEAH!
The Freeze-Frame bus tour would start in NYC and would run across the country over the course of two years. In exchange for a good grill-out meal and some beers JD & I would give each and every listener a brand new in-home stereo system that included surround sound in every room, all linked to a kick-a** computer/stereo system that of course was tuned into what else? FREEZE-FRAME RADIO!
WOO HOO!
So I have the plan, now I just gotta win the lottery.
