Help settle an argument

That I already won. But that is irrelevant.

So we have to go to Department of Juvenile Justice today. I bought my son something nice to wear and told my husbnad, pull what you want out and I will iron it when I get home. Well I get home and there are a pair of shorts on the ironing board. Besides the fact that they has been home two hours and he could have ironed them himself, I questioned why shorts? He says because he was not going to see a judge. But I said this is the second set of people to "judge" us about this. The first were the police. This set of people are the intake interviewers. They will gather pertinent info- reports cards, history, medical records, etc... Anyway then she turns that over to a judge. Now I will give my husband a little break, it was 99 today and there is a haze in the air I have never seen. But, we have air and they would too.

Long story short, he wore pants... but was I wrong? I hate first impressions, but I know they count! Where's JD I need a poll!

I don't think so.  Every time I have to go to court, I wear a suit.  Black suit with white shirt and Red tie.  That color combination is a secret weapon of power, unless of course I am on the other side, then a Navy blue suit with blue shirt and plain tie.

Having spent a little time in the legal field, its all about respect.  The judge in these types of hearings has only a brief review of files and a recommendation and a gut instinct based on, you got it, first impressions.  They dont have the time to get to the nitty gritty with their case loads.

by all means - slacks , this is serious buisness and he should look it , to wear shorts is like saying " can you hurry up your honor , I've got a tennis match in an hour .

Shorts would've been totally unacceptable.  And why even iron them!  These people are judging not only your son, but your ability as parents to keep him under control so they don't have to, and it's all about the impression they get from you.

I fully agree Ruby. Shorts would have been tacky. At the very least slacks and a polo shirt would have been acceptable. a suit would have been perfect. You were totally in the right

I would be on your side Ruby, unfortunatley the first impressions do count, so you did the right thing getting him to wear pants, although if I were to go to court in my pants, I would get arrested for sure! Pants in the UK means your underwear!

I agree that long pants were the correct thing.
The people you were/are going to see can't or won't take the time to get much past a "first impression"

I agree. Slacks all the way. Even though is was down right hot, you have to show the importance and seriousness of the situation.

My pappy raised me to treat formal or official with respect.  Always dress up to the situation, always sign with your full name.  Given what you have said about your husband being a bit lax in the incentive department, you were right to hold the line.
