Slow forum access

- Not that there is a lot of activity here on the weekends, but its not YOUR computer; the forum access has been VERY SLOW since friday afternoon. When trying to log in yesterday, I had received a 404 cannot access the server error that indicated the problem would be solved in a couple of minutes.

Well, we are able to access the forum, but the speed in doing so is quite slow. We apologize for this. The server tho, is not one of ours, is not located at WFFR. The forum server is run via a free forum hosting service.

I am guessing they had a major crash yesterday, and everything has not yet been completely restored to acceptable performance.

If there is still a problem on Monday, Riggs and/or I will see what we can do about contacting the forum hosting folks.

Untill then, please continue to be patient....its still much much quicker than the old dial up days using windows 95!

(All apologies to dial up users......especially those using Windows 95!!! Is that even legal anymore)

I've noticed it being slow for several days. It seems that at times most everything loads except it never quite finishes. When it does that, I think it's the ads that are not loading completely.

Have you guys considered setting up your own fourm in your server space where the main FFR pages are located? If you've thought about doing that, may I ask what kept you from wanting to do it? If it's technical issues in setting it all up, I may know a guy willing to help with a project like that.

I'll do the same as Dave here- and dave- thanks very much again for the kind words for Jazz 101 on the jazz thread over there.

HURRAY ITS THE WEEKEND! JD HAD HIMSELF A LONG LONG WORK WEEK- THE ONLY THING ON THE AGENDA FOR TONIGHT IS BBQ pork chops (I will stop yelling) on the grill, with grilled vegetables and a couple-a-three Heineckens!! nice quiet decompressing evening! Nice day in milwaukee sunny 73 right now.

Stopped by the National Liquor bar on their last day of operating. This was a Milwaukee Institution, more like a Milwaukee Mental Institution. Had been around since 1939- it was bedlam, but I had to get one last beer there. I had not been there in 12 yrs. Its on a scary side of town, and its probably good that it is closing so these odd-balls can no longer congregate en-masse and get drunk on 50 cent taps of Blatz. But I went to pay hommage to the death of an era. Read more here if interested:

Yes today is a day of mourning for the Milwaukee scmuck. The 50-cent tapper Joe camel tattoo janitor. On parole. But for the grace of god go we, teeth or not, shower or not.

Web- I would ask Riggs to give you the "official" answer- but I am sure we do not host the forum ourselves for lack of space. I believe the WFFR song collection has already filled up 2 hard-drives with 60 gigs each. I have no idea how much bandwidth would need to be added to do this on our own servers.

Y'all have a great saturday night- hope to see you here for Und 80s and Jazz 101 tomorrow night!

Webguy,

We don't have our own server. The station actually operates directly out of a computer located on site (I know, scary to have that kind of access available to people, but the broadcast computer is ONLY a broadcast computer, used for nothing else).

JD was waaaaaaaaaay off, we've got a lot more than 60 gb used for the music, probably closer to 3 or 4 times that.

JR: Yeah, I knew you were running the station right from there, but are you also running the freezeframeradio.com site from your local machines too? I assumed you had a hosting account that was serving the FFR pages.

I traced freezeframeradio.com to the Savvis network so I assumed that the FFR site was hosted there most likely through a Savvis reseller . . . unless your ISP is using the Savvis network.

If that's the case, then you're right, you certainly wouldn't want the forums on the same machines as the station runs on.

No problem. Just thought I'd offer to help if I could.

and I did mean my statment to mean 120 gig....but still, its double that?? no wonder why I am continually building 80 foot tin-foil broadcast towers and putting out electrical fires throughout my show.

By the way, Maggie, the cleaning lady who comes in Sunday, does not like you riggs. She does not like you AT ALL!

Web Guy,

I'm not real knowledgable on what would be needed to set up a forum of our own on the website.

It is indeed hosted on an off-site server (the web pages that is), in fact different parts of the web-site are located on three different domains.

Wouldn't I need to purchase some kind of software to set up our own forum? And if I did, how customizable would it be? You know Star would throw herself in front of traffic if she lost her points

Ok, that's what I was assuming was the case with hosting of the main site.

There are quite a few good free PHP forum scripts. It's usually a matter of downloading the scripts, uploading them to the server, initializing a database, then setting up the preferences. I don't know of one that is exactly like this one, so if a little interface change would cause heart failure, then that wouldn't be an option.

I would use the analogy of changing from one word processor to another. They do the same thing, but the buttons might be in a different place on the screen.

There are ways to dump and import data bases from one to another, but that would be more programming than I'd want to do. For me to help Instal a new forum would mean starting over with the actual threads. I think those all important post counts could be manually set once the user registered on the new forum. With the number of members we have, that shoulldn't be a huge task.

The advantages of hosting your own forum should be faster response times, no advertising, and being able customize it.

The disadvantage would be the "starting over" pains for those used to this particular forum. Also, you'd have the issue of updating the software as the developer of the forum script released updates.

I'm not pushing for this in any way . . . just saying if you wanted to pursue it, I would be happy to help.
