I need a drink , or 2 or 3 or ..

I just read todays paper , I have never in my entire life rolled my eyes that many times , to start- seems that a  govt. agency new about some of the 9-11 hijackers but failed to pass on the info , why ?  a LAWYER said they were here legally so they couldn't pass it on to the FBI .  I mean a big WTF? on that one ,  now this same govt. is going after a bunch of teens - their crime ? being smart enuff to use a computer ! they are looking at felony charges .  WTF? should be trying the adults for stupidity , BTW- what did the kids do ? CHATTED.  Now there are a bunch of politicians who don't know if they should cr##  or get off the pot . Seems the new supreme court nominee helped with some gay legislation . (for free) . the conservatives who last week loved him are now going  du-du-duh which way did he go george which way did he go ? the liberals who last week were fretting about abortion and civil rights are now going (u-guessed it !)  which way.. . then the story about the NCAA's ban on " abusive and hostile " names . care to guess what old timers called Indians ? U -guessed it ! HOSTILES . this was done in secracy by some employees of the ncaa without asking any native americans how THEY felt about it. Care to guess what the Chief of the Seminole tribe had to say ? U-guessed it !  Seems he likes FSU and all the good stuff they do ! ( ps- i would take it as a compliment if i were a Seminole , who would  name their team after a bunch of losers ? ) I'm sure theres more but my eyes just can't take the abuse .

Dave,

I've been going NUTS about that story for years.

The Patriot act wasn't around yet, so they had no right to search the guys laptop, EVEN THOUGH IT HAD DETAILS that would have potentially prevented 9/11!!!!!

The damn thing was in the governments posession for months and they couldn't open it and look at it!

It's really infuriating. Just like the current "No-Profiling" thing that we're going through now. HOW STUPID! A crime is committed by a white guy, four feet tall with no hair, but DON'T YOU DARE ONLY PULL OVER short, bald white men for questioning!

It's Political Correctness gone insane and it's going to be the end of this country one day if we don't stop it!

I have NOTHING against folks from the middle east in this country, THEY ARE WELCOME HERE, but for the time being they need to be willing to accept the fact they'll get a little extra screening at the airport for crying out loud!

I agree to! If they stop me and I know I am innocent, then so be it!

Profiling works! That is why we ask for a description of the subject!

I think the problem is "Profiling" has become such a buzz word that it's immediately seen as negative.

Let's go back to "Fits the description". It's hard to argue with THAT!

OK, I know what I'm asking for here:

Finding a suspect who fits a description is one thing.  Interrogating someone who because of their ethnicity may be 'up to something' is just plain discrimination.  I don't understand why airports only search people of middle eastern decent who's probably innocent, when some crazy white guy could easily be bringing a gun on the plane.  I think everyone should be searched equally.

So, questioning a suspect that fits the description of tall middle eastern man with a beard is fine.  Questioning someone for a crime that hasn't been committed with no suspect just because of their ethnicity is wrong.

But we don't have the time to stop everyone, it's just not possible.

I'm not suggesting that the police pull over everyone of middle-eastern descent.

I'm saying when the SPECIFIC concern is terrorism, such as boarding a plane, entering the subway, driving a truck into an underground parking structure of a building, there is NOTHING wrong with giving a little extra attention to someone that resembles the people we are in a war with.

Yes, the Timothy McVeighs are out there, but they are the exception to the rule. Right now we are in a war on terror with extremist muslims. Therefore they must be scrutinized a little more than the average person. This is not an unreasonable request.

If men that fit my description were blowing up buildings in the US, I'd be MORE THAN UNDERSTANDING if I was pulled aside and questioned more thoroughly before being allowed to enter a public building.

The safety of thousands has to be put before the hurt feelings of an individual.

(I'm issuing a warning before I put my foot in my mouth.  I'm in a bad mood today because of the people around me at work, so if I offend anyone, I don't mean to.  If I do, please let me know, and I will back off.)

We have white middle aged white men extremists, the terrorists are middle eastern extremists.  Personally, I would hate to be a muslim in this country right now.  Maybe I have the views I do because I am friends with a US Citizen of middle eastern decent, and I know what he has to go through.  He was passed up for a promotion at the company he was with because it would involve traveling to Europe.

My friend looks nothing like any pictures of terrorists we have been shown.  He's very americanized and doesn't have an accent.  He's even built different.  The only reason he is ever stopped is because of his descent.  And I think that's wrong.  If he fit the description of even one known terrorist, I could understand why he might be searched.

I have to disagree with you Mz.  I cross the Mexico/US  border frequently.  My car is watched becuase of how many times it has crossed.  I am also profiled.  I am told that I resemble a huge drug family out of Mexico City--right down to the green eyes.  So I am frequenlty interrogated, targeted and searched.  I never mind.  I am glad they do it, despite the inconvenience.  If it is too inconvenient for others, well, sorry, go live somewhere else.

I also travel extensively by air.  I was grounded during 9/11 away from home.  I remember just wanting to get home so badly.  To this day I watch everyone coming on the plane and keep watching throughout the flight.

But you look like someone specific, and that's why you're stopped.  I'm fine with that.  Searching someone due to only their race, creed, or gender is discrimination.

Of course, the only thing I do about it is sit here and complain.  And I try very hard not to judge people and treat everyone equally and fairly.  The friend I know, and other middle eastern people I've heard about, don't complain and just put up with it.  But that doesn't mean it's right.

My point is that there's a fine line between profiling and discrimination, and I believe that line is crossed often.

All I can say is Safety First.

Short of a cavity search I say they can do what they want to me when I'm boarding a plane.

If they have ANY reason to beleive I may be a risk, even if it's just because I'm part polish, then I say go for it. I'll live through their search. On 9/11 3,000+ people weren't afforded that opportunity.

Reasonable people can agree to disagree Mz, reasonable people like you n' me! (quite a poet aren't I?)
