Dear Diary...

Dear Diary,

I look back at your 1993 origins, where the first entry was that I regretted tossing out 1987-1989.

I wonder if anyone else here keeps a diary or journal?

If so, have you kept it for a long time, how has it changed as you have changed, why do you keep it? To keep a log of your days, or to write down the wisdoms you have learned, or both??

I kept a journal my Jr. year through high school only because it was a requirement for a writing class.

At the end of the year, I went back through and read it and really enjoyed it. I always planned to continue but didn't have the discipline to do it.

I thought it would be cool when my son was born to start keeping a journal of his life. Just my thoughts and daily events that we went through with him. I thought I'd not tell him about it and he'd then either find it when I was gone, or give it to him in 25 years or so.

Again, with a lack of discipline/time/priorities that hasn't happened either.

I have found it an absolute necessity, if something strikes me as profound, a life lesson learned, a song lyric, lessons learned from a book, to record these. I think the register themselves in my mind, but its nice to have a paper document to one day go over and go "this is what I have learned".......like the other night, this lyric from John Lennon's "Beautiful Boy" struck me for the first time-

"Life is what happens to you
While you’re busy making other plans".

By now many truisms like this are the chat on the side of Starbucks coffee cups, but every once in awhile you'll get smacked with a hint of truth that is worth recording!

The other day I saw this young girl who lives in the apartments where I live grilling out. I asked "another day in paradise???" and she said (with a smile) "naw, just trying to make another day in hell ok!"  I didnt ask the details, but the kid cooks an ok burger, and I pour a good beer. She'll be alright, and this was worthy of the journal.

I have kept a Journal off and on for years.  I started in high school writing down my secrets, most of it is coded so only I understand it, incase mom and dad ever got hold of it.

There was a period of about one year I wrote daily.  That is incredible to go back and read--it was though late half of 1981 to 1982.

I stopped for years and started again recently.  I write about once a week. It has become my vent.  I say exactly what I want to say, no holes barred, just pen what I want to scream out loud.  I especially write if it was a good or bad day.

Great topic.  thanks for starting it.  I pulled out an old high school one and am reading about senior prom.  Sorry, but that means Chaka's coming.

what's amazing for me is to look back, and see these realisms take hold in my awareness- "eg WORK SUCKS.......I do not miss who I broke up with, I miss who I fell in love with, and these are not the same girl......." Its amazing to track back and remember the person I was feeling the words I wrote. Its building blocks to today, many of the prejudices are gone, much of the pain has been forgotten or put into perspective. But these little thought snap-shots of time are amazing. I remember being the person who wrote these things, even now. I remember me.

Being an artist, I'm more of a visual person. My digital camera is now my bible. My dad got it for me for Christmas, and I've definately got his money's worth. If you look at my blog (which I just recently started), you'll find it's mostly pictures. Hence how I came upon some of the pictures of me as a kid and decided to use one as an avatar.

Thanks! I don't really do much with it except post pics, so I don't think much of it, so I don't think to give the address out. I'm glad you had fun with it.

Reminded by Mz's cool and nice blog (& mark my words MrHartz is a very cool & happy man), I went back and revisited my old Jazz 101 page from back in the day. This was sort of a blog before blog was a blog. The real reason I thought it might be cool to bring up tho is to just have people visit the home pages of the artists who have sent me tracks to play, & that I feature regularly on Jazz 101!

http://www.freezeframeradio.com/showguide.htm

I think that is the most rewarding part of doing the show- being in contact with up and coming artists and giving them their first taste of being exposed to a world-wide audience. IF YOU ARE OR KNOW OF ANYONE WHO IS A JAZZ/ EXPERIMENTAL/ EASY LISTENING/ VOCAL ARTIST WITH A DEMO/RECORDING DO NOT HESITATE TO CONTACT ME: jazz@freezeframeradio.com . I would be more than happy to feature you on Jazz 101!!
