I was 7 yrs old and had a yellow wagon. My buddy Doug and I hung signs on trees around the block that said "bus stop". Parents would load up their youngsters, a dime a piece for a ride around the block in the wagon. We were coming around one corner to drop some kids off when this one girl from across the street came to tell a neighbor lady "Hey Elvis just died!" Hot sunny sticky summer day. Remember going home to watch the news...

I was only 5 years old when Elvis passed away. Like Rubys mother my mother had also seen him in concert before he passed away.

As for the Challenger I was at school watching the lift off and saw the Challenger explode on TV. I was devestated. They cancelled school the rest of the day.

Sophmore year high school in Spanish 1. An announcement went out on the loud speaker, we had a prayer and things went on. Years later, I heard about how some schools has assemblys with big tvs to watch the coverage the rest of the day; how others rolled tvs into the classrooms and watched it there; a catholic school held a prayer service. Nothing like that where I went.

Where were you during 9-11?

I was at work- clueless. My husband kept calling me, he heard things on the radio. Eventually we went into the hall where there was a tv and watched in horror. I have never heard my husband so concerned

9-11 I was new at a job and realized that NOBODY was around. This is before I knew CNN sent out Breaking News e-mails. So I walked around and saw everyone was in the excercise facility watching the tvs. Saw the towers fall. We thought Chicago was next. Terrible day.

Riggs and I and a couple of friends were to go to a Brewers game that night; that was cancelled. But we still got together and grilled out to celebrate life that day at Riggs house. I remember starting the grill on the front porch and all these little kids walking around with face paints on- like a little parade they were having. I remember a bunch of parents out with their kids that night.

I was in one of our Avis locations 2 miles from the Twin Towers. I got there to help prep cars for that days rentals. We were outside when we heard the explosion. We then saw the 2nd plane bearing down on the 2nd tower. We were so scared we tried to get to the airport but it was pandemonium. That was when we heard the news on the Radio that they airports were grounded. We were not able to get back to our store because they were blocking off that area. only 15 cars were lost but the car we were in we finally made it to New Jersey and went to the COrporate office. They flew us back by helicopter back to Oklahoma.

Everytime I walked into the airport office and saww it on TV I just started crying. I had to go home one day because I was so distraught.

What made me so mad was that the car rental companies were ripping off the customers by charging them exhobantant fees to take thier cars to thier destinations. Avis was the first car company during this time to allow cusotmers to take thier cars where ever they needed to and only charge them the per day fees that they were paying when they got the car. Hertz, Budget,National,Enterprise,Alamo, were all charging $300-$1000 in one way drop off charges. These companies lost alot of business during that time. because they were charging such fees or not renting cars at all. Cingular Wireless which has the lock on the Manhattan area for wireless did nothing for those customers. People that lost thier jobs in the tradgedy were still required to pay thier bills and Cingular made no payment arrangments and even turned off phones during that time. I lost all respect for them.

No airport had its own cars until 6 months later.

wow- you were "there". How awful!! I remember Riggs said he saw the 2nd plane hit live on tv. I couldn't fathom that. But to have been there- how absouletly terrible!

When Riggs ran his online cd store, I remember seeing tubs of cds ready for mailing in the studio, and 2 or 3 were addressed to people at the Twin Towers who were pretty steady customers. I'm not sure if Riggs ever checked to see if these people were among the dead or not....

This will be year number for of Riggs & I and friends get together for our Sept 11 get together. I promised that I would hold them every year for as long as we are able to get together!

9-11 I was in Bentonville Arkansas visiting Wal-Mart.  I actually could not believe that they did not cancel or postpone the meetings.  there were many people there and all the conference rooms were occupied.  I had already been watching it unfold from my hotel room--Anyway they took me to the cafeteria.  right in front of me was the largest big screen tv I had ever seen.  The buyer had his back to the screen and was conducting business as usual.  I was mesmerized by the tv and doing my best to concentrate on the meeting.  I really just wanted to be home.

My mom's family lives in NY. Her sister in law (my aunt) has a receipt from 8:52 am. She was in the Twin Towers withdrawing money from her ATM inside. She was very lucky!

when the shuttle blew up - I was in savannah , got off work a little early due to rain (construction ) ,walked in the door ,turned on the tv and there was Dan Rather , that part that blew off with the smoke trail was on the screen and he was hoping it was the shuttle seperating from the boosters,     9-11 , was here working the tire shop when the owners wife called and said a plane had hit a tower , I went to  my house (next door to the shop )  saw what was happening , went back to the shop , got the boss, we stepped in just as 2 nd tower started to fall, we were both dumbstruck (?) .  Elvis - didn't here about it untill evening news , was baleing hay all day then a quick swim in river , was after 5 when I got home .

Elvis - I was in the back seat of my parents car coming home from my grandparents house when they broke into the music and announced Elvis had died.

Challenger - Ironically I was in current events class in high school and they announced the disaster over the PA system.

9/11 - I was working from home then.  I got up because the guy on the radio said a small plane had hit one of the twin towers.  I came downstairs and turned on the TV and saw the hole in the building and decided to hit the record button.  I usually don't do that, but I had two new puppies that were not patient about going out, and I just kind of sensed this was important enough to watch.  Even though they were saying it was a small cessna at the time.

When I got back in and was watching live, I remember seeing the second plane coming and thinking "Man, that one looks like it's headed right for the other tower.  OH MY GOD IT IS!"  Then it hit.

I can honestly say that was the first time in my life I worried about my safety in that way.  For the next week or so after the FAA lifted the flying ban I was jittery every time I heard a plane fly overhead.

I hear you Riggs. The following spring I was walking somewhere and a low flying jet went past me and all sorts of mental bells and whistles went off inside me.

I got my train trip across America to New Orleans. Any other trips will be flying! I can fly, but really don't like it. Haven't been on a plane in 10 yrs. I know the cockpits are locked now, that there are federal marshals on planes, but I just know the next flight that 9-11 will be on my mind. Its probably on everyone's mind. And that sucks. Maybe I will just drive instead.

Elvis is dead?

As for the others, I was at school for the Challenger and work for 9-11... I mask tragedy with humor, but for events as bleak as those I just keep to myself.

I'm the youngin' here. I won't comment on where I was when Elvis died.

Challenger - I was at my grandma's house (not quite sure why) watching it on TV, and she was in the kitchen. I remember being confused, like "You mean they're not supposed to do that?"

9-11 - I was at work when they came on over the radio saying a plane crashed into the tower. I went into my bosses office, and he turned the TV on and we were watching the coverage when the second plane hit. It was very surreal. Everyone in our town panicked that we would run out of gas, and people were waiting hours in line to get gas. Stations hiked the prices up even higher than they are now. I remember saying that I had a fairly full tank, and that I didn't think there would be a problem and refused to wait in line to get gas when my husband thought we should.

Evlis: Not the faintest memory of where I was.

Challenger: I was at tech school in a two year building construction program. I remember being in the "dorm" which was just a small house and heard it on the radio. We had a black and white 13" tv that would only pickup NBC on the rabbit ears but I remember turning that on to watch the news.

911: I was working in my wood shop. I had the radio on but wasn't really listening that close. They broke to the national news coverage and at first, I didn't think too much about it. They had said a small plane hit one of the towers. I thought "ah, that's not good" and went back to work. It really took about an hour or even more before I realized how serious the situation truly was. I went home for lunch and then spent most of the rest of the day watching it unfold on T.V.

Anyone remember Nixon resigning?

I was 4, I distinctly remember sitting on this big purple pillow my folks had in the living room, watching the news coverage on the old black & white console as my mom was making dinner. At that age I of course didn't understand the reasons behind the resignation, I just remember liking Nixon's strong voice and stiff manurisms; sort of like a puppet or something. I remember saying "Mom the President quits tomorrow!"

Elvis, I wasn't born, sorry!!!

9-11 - It is weird you should bring this one up as I was thinking about this on Friday, I am currently working on the same Calendar as I was that day, I was with the clients when it happend I had the radio on, so I turned it to a news station and listened to it all unfold, I just remember being stunned and not really understanding what was going on, it wasn't till I got home and saw all the news coverage on tv that I realised how big a tradgey it was and still is, walking to the bus stop to get home it seemed as if everyone was talking about it. very strange feeling.

Really too young for Elvis. I was barely 3.

The Challenger was 6th grade in school. They came in and told us. We said a prayer and continued with our afternoon.

9/11 I was at work. Just doing what I did and listening to the radio. Eventually I went to see some of it on tv.

Dang... all the other biggies!

Hmmm... Mom was taking me, my brother, and sister to the store with her when we heard Elvis was dead... I was just a little kid in the back seat of a Datsun B-210 driving up 58 Highway in Belton, MO.

When Ronald Regan was shot, I was laying on the floor of the living room at my dad's house trying to watch cartoons after school. I was mad that they interrupted my show just to show the President leaving from some giving some speech. I couldn't believe it when I saw him get shot.

Space shuttle explosion was my junior year of high school. I remember Mr. Poisal coming into the class room with tears in his eyes. He'd just watched it on the TV in the teacher's lounge. We got quiet immediately, because he was NOT the kind of guy to cry. He told us what happened. Not much was said for the rest of the hour. Mostly everyone was just really sad.
