gasoline

I would highly recommend that all fill their tanks today if possible,

gas is supposed to (will) go up by as much as 40 cents a gallon by the weekend.

I filled mine yesterday morning. I figured it would have jumped yesterday but it hasn't yet.

Ugh - I think it already happened here - $2.59 a gallon for the cheap stuff yesterday.

I was surfing the Net for the Toyota Prius last night. Anyone know anything about these? The $2 grand in tax refund sounds nice... But it'd be the most expensive car I ever bought.

I paid $2.66 on Sunday and it was the lowest price in town. I'm going to be doing a lot of driving this weekend, so I'm afraid I'll eventually have to fill up.

My husband spent $50 to fill up his pickup last night. He was furious. I'm going to talk to local gas station guy about getting E85. If they do, I'm trading in my van for a vehicle that burns E85 and we will primarily drive that. If you get an honest gas station (yeah, good luck there), you can save up to 60 cents a gallon as opposed to regular gas. The gas stations are as bad as the oil companies. They're all gouging us.

I wish I could take a different way to work. The road I have to take has a couple very steep hills and no sidewalk, so riding my bike is out of the question, and it's too far to walk. But, I did just get my car tuned up, so that'll help the mileage. Next, I'm buying some new tires...

Most of our prices are over $2.50 and close to $2.60 a gallon. I was on super low yesterday and was able to fill up for only $2.43 a gallon. Woo hoo! What a bargain.

I told my boss I couldn't afford to come to work anymore. Then I quickly reminded myself that I couldn't not afford to come to work.

I heard on the news that natural gas prices jumped 20% yesterday too.

We have a deal here were every spring, we have the choice of locking in at a set price for a year, or riding the market. This year, I locked in . . . I think I'm going to be glad I did!

I planned to lock in my propane but didn't have enough $ lying around to give them as much as they demanded. I guess I may be screwed too.

Here at my shop/office, I heat with propane too. I also have a wood stove in my shop area so I suspect I'll be hauling wood this winter.

I have a friend who runs a gas station. I asked him why when the wholesale price goes up, his prices go up the same day even though he's selling gas that he's had in his tanks for a week or more. His reply was that he had to charge the current price because that's what it was going to cost him to replace what he has sold. So, I then asked him why then when the wholesale price goes down, it takes days or weeks for his price to go down too. He just smiled and said that was because he was selling the gas that he had to pay the higher price for.

He said that most stations only charge 4-5 cents more than their cost plus taxes. He said he makes a lot more money off the convenience items people put in their bodies than he does off the gas he sells.

My husband used to work at a gas station and said the same thing: the money is in the stuff they sell inside, not the gas. He's also said that the way they determined their prices was by basing it on the prices at a few other select gas stations in town, then they made theirs one cent cheaper. That is why when I hit 1/4 tank, I start looking at the prices at all the stations then go to the one that is lowest. Sometimes there can be as much as a 15 cent difference between a gas station on campus and one on the edge of town.

I guess I should feel fortunate as far as natural gas goes- its included in the price of my rent, and I am locked into my lease for another 10 months, so they can't raise the rent in that time.

On the Toyota--I am a real toyota fan.  Check it out--I drive the Highlander, get decent gas mileage and it is very comfortable..

A barrel of oil just went to $70. $3+ a gallon will be everywhere this week.

Anyone have a horse and buggy?

It is just too bad that my body is not ready to ride my bike 18 miles to work. It would take me about an hour. I am just thankful that these high prices didn't start at the beginning of June.

I received this as an e-mail....

hear we are going to hit close to $3.00 a gallon by the end of summer. Want gasoline prices to come down? We need to take some intelligent, united action

Phillip Hollsworth, offered this good idea:

This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy gas on a certain day" campaign that was going around last April or May!  The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to "hurt" ourselves by refusing to buy gas. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work.

Please read it and join with us!

By now you're probably thinking gasoline priced at about $1.50 is super cheap. Me too! It is currently $2.75 for regular unleaded in my town.  Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at $1.50-$1.75, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace.... not sellers.

With the price of gasoline going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of gas come down is if we hit someone in the pocketbook by not purchasing their gas!
And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves.  How? Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas.  But we CAN have an impact on gas prices if we all act together to force a price war.

He re's the idea:

For the rest of this year, DON"T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL. If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they
reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit.

But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and Mobil gas buye rs. It's really simple to do!! Now, don't whimp (sic) out on me at this point... keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!  I am sending this note to about thirty people. If each of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers!  If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it..... THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!  Again, all you have to do is send this to 10 people and DON"T purchase ANY gasoline from EXXON and MOBIL. That's all.

How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you! Acting together we can make a difference.  If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on.

PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE $1.30 RANGE AND KEEP THEM DOWN. THIS CAN REALLY WORK

You may also want to watch out for Lukoil. I am not sure of their significance yet, but they have been replacing Mobil stations in the Philadelphia area. I do not know if they purchased some of the shops or if they are just a new name of the combined company of Exxon and Mobil.

E85, people, E85. I can't say it enough. Buy a vehicle with an FFV (it won't cost any more than one without it) and you may already have one in your car and find a place that sells it. Oil companies do not build new refineries and they keep shutting down the old ones and then they tell us it's our fault because gas consumption is up and they have a hard time keeping up because they don't have any new refineries. Vicious circle. Ethanol refineries are popping up and created over 80,000 new jobs last year. They are making the committment to lower gas prices. They use brewery waste, cheese waste, forestry waste and all kinds of other waste that would end up in a landfill in addition to American grown corn to make E85. It burns cleaner. It is less offensive to the environment because it is more water soluble than regular gas and does not pollute groundwater as much as regular gas. It emits fewer harmful gases. Here is the kicker - it can sell up to 60 cents cheaper a gallon than regular gas.

Trish steps off of her E85 soapbox.

speaking of gas, I have to run out to a client site this afternoon for a bit- 36 miles round trip. The travel is reimbursed at 35 cents a mile- the same as it was when gas was $1.50 a gal! Yep, old JD going to take the long way this time.....
