Fox news has been reporting all morning that the water levels in New Orleans have been rising slowly all day instead of receding. The think there's more damage to the levees than originally thought.

They're talking about a mandatory evacuation of the city that could last weeks.

The longer the buildings sit in 2 to 10 feet of water the less likely they can be saved.

It's starting to look pretty bad for that area

that's so crazy.  My husband and i are glued to the tv, and when i came in to work yesterday, my coworkers were like "what hurricane".  i hate them sometimes.  well not hate.  but come on.

I've been viewing the pictures today. All them beautiful homes just ruined. Riggs maybe put up or post some of the new orleans pics again so people can see how georgous the town was?

I know what it's like to see everything flooded and how devastating it can be. We live in between the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers and during the flood of '93 it was awful. A trip that normall took 30 minutes took 4 hours because of the massive flooding. My grandparents house on Water St. was under water. It was horrible. My aunt completely lost her house because the levee broke and it swept away her house. My wedding was during that time and 2 of the halls flooded, so we were constantly changing where the reception was going to be held and then the caterer bailed a week and a half before the wedding because the hall was too far away for them, they said. My husband and I were both unemployed because my work was completely under water and he couldn't get to his job. I feel for the people in New Orleans. I've never been through a hurricane, but I've seen the effect of massive flooding and it's not pretty. They have my prayers.

I cannot imagine what these people are going through.  I want to donate to help--but want to find a place that will take my money and actually use it for needy people and not take off 85% from the donation for administration costs.


I want to be rich someday so I may help people, and would love to start a cp scholarship fund.


Really have to count my blessings--I am healthy, have a wonderful wife and two great kids.

The Red Cross does take a portion, but I don't remember how much. Also, the Red Cross determines how much they will give to a specific effort without consideration of how much has been donated in respect to that effort. So, giving to the Red Cross is good, but giving more to the Red Cross now doesn't really make a difference than giving to the Red Cross later. They've already got the money they plan to spend, and your money will go to future efforts. So if you want to give specifically to the hurricaine victims, I would suggest a smaller, more local organization (local to the victims, that is). You can check out a charity before you donate at Give.org. Unfortunately, the fiscal year ended recently, so you'll probably find a lot of less detailed reports. But, you can always request an annual report from the chraity of your choice as well.

If you have a choice, don't give through United Way unless it's already set up to be taken out of your paycheck. The United Way takes over half of your donation. For example, when someone donates $25 to the Children's Organ Transplant Association, we only get about $8 of that.

$8 for a $25 donation? That is highway robbery!  I would rather take the cash out of my pocket and hand it to someone.


I am sure there will be local events eventually. They need to sort through a lot before it can get to that point. Hopefully the federal government will help with the clean-up.

That's why I can't stress enough to check out a charity before you donate. Especially be sure to ask how much actually goes into the fund you request it to go into. Many employers force their employees to give a portion of their check every week to a charity through the United Way, but I don't think they check out the UW policies first.
