Poverty #'s

You've probably all saw some articles on the US poverty levels today. But our local paper just posted some stunning local stats...

Poverty rate jumps in Milwaukee and statewide

New estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau show the squeeze of poverty tightened in Wisconsin and Milwaukee in recent years, increasing to 11% in the state and 26% in the city.

Using a two-year average, Wisconsin had the highest increase in the rate of poverty in the U.S., pushing up 1.9 percentage points from 2002-'03 to 2003-'04, according to estimates released today. And the city of Milwaukee's poverty rate climbed into the top 10 among major U.S. cities. Milwaukee's ranks seventh in the country, with 26% of its residents below the poverty line in 2004.

The number of children in Milwaukee living in poverty was 41.3%. That figure put the city fourth in the nation, tied with Miami.

Why is it that the people that really need help can not get it? Darn red tape.

What is Milwaukee's issue? Doesn't anybody take care of themselves there? Doesn't everyone strive to do better than their parents? More importantly, if it is so tough there, why do you stay?

Or do they just all think that they are going to go play ball for a professional sports team?

Well, Milwaukee is one of the most, if not THE most segregated citys in the country. There is a poor part or 2 that most people avoid like the plague, and then nice areas around these. On an average day, one wouldn't witness how terrible things can be for some people.

I know Milwaukee has lost a lot of jobs to China.  Masterlock comes to mind.  If it wasn't for the Brewery's....I try to find things that are made in USA, but we are rapidly becoming a service nation and not manufacturing.  Even the produce is coming out of Chile, Mexico and Brazil.

Even the Osh Kosh plant is in Mexico! What's the sense in that?

Would you believe too that many of the plants manufacturing in Mexico are pulling out for China.  We have the plant down in Mexico and I have seen many buildings being abandoned for the cheaper China.

The segregation in the city is huge.

In fact, I don't know the numbers exactly, but when you break down the drop out rates between caucasian and african americans in the city, it was like 5% drop out for the caucasians and it was over 75% for the african americans.

The inner-city here is a complete mess and we're not figuring out a way to solve the problem.

It's a shame you can't teach these kids common sense lessons, because the lessons require a certain amount of self esteem to begin with. When you've got parents who are too busy with their own dysfunctional lives to give a rat's bum how their kids turn out, you end up with kids desparate for love and attention. The ones who don't end up in jail think having kids is the answer (someone who will HAVE to love them). It's a vicious cycle...

I never imagined Milwaukee having those kinds of Problems. I used to think it was limited to the Major Artery cities like Hotlanta,Chicago, NY, Miami,Los Angeles, Seattle etc. I went to Madison a couple of years back for US Cellular and I was told just about the same thing that JD said  that there is a poor area and then alot of nicer areas built around it. It is really shocking. Course now Milwaukee can join Tulsa, Paducah, Mississippi, and a few others as cities and states having real poverty issues.
