You know I like the serious stuff. So here goes. How do you feel about the forced evacuations in New Orleans. The way I understand it is that the government can force you to leave a public area, but not your home. Also it seems that no one actually wants to do the forced evacuations, like the military said it would not do it. I understand why- that will leave a bad (worse) feeling towards the military. Anyway, I see it like the seatbelt laws- the government protecting us from ourselves. We all know seatbelts save lives, but if you choose not to act on that information, that is your perogative. If you choose to stay in your home and face disease and death, so be it.
I agree Ruby, with the provision that the rest of us are not going to pay to get you fixed up if you get hurt through your own negligence. Don't start whining and sueing if you get hurt by staying somewhere or getting ejected through your windshield.
I agree Ruby. I do think that the people of New ORleans need to leave so that they can repair the city and while I admire the people who do not want to leave they have a choice. LEave or face certain death with all the toxic waste there.
I agree with you on this one Ruby. Whatever you do in your house to yourself is fine, as long as it doesn't affect anyone else. If you want to live in sewage and toxic waste, so be it.
I haven't heard though, do any of the people who are staying have children? I would say that if they chose to stay, it would be unfit living conditions for the child (or pets), and the child (or pets) should be taken away and put in a better place.
That is a good point MZ, it is like a form of abuse. However, most of the people are the elderly who are scared to lose their homes and have no where to go and no energy to have to work and travel. It is sooo sad!
I was disgusted when I heard about the 30 people that they found in the nursing home. The staff just abandoned them. Shouldn't that be neglect or manslaughter? I guess it is different if they decided they didn't want to leave then the staff said okay, we can't make you and then the staff left.

I understand that there are many disabled people who are stranded. But if they won't take the help that's being offered, why waste any more time on them? Save the people who want saved, and they'll save more people. It sounds heartless, I know, but why waste the energy when there are other people who need and want the help?
Yeah, I heard about that too. They did say that at least 50 poeple were rescued from there though. Maybe they died because of natural causes or failure of machines they needed for life support.
As far as wasting the rescuer's time, I agree move on and put an X on their house!
I am probably going to be very unpopular on this one. Gripe, moan and complain. It's the governments fault they didn't come to the rescue fast enough. Its the governments fault that we are under water. Well, Mr. Mayor, why are your busses underwater when you could have been evacuating. It is the governments fault that I am being told to leave. It's the governments fault I don't have water or electricity. it will be the governments fault that I get sick in this toxic water.
Sorry, but I live in earthquake country. I have very expensive earthquake insurance, and I have a storage of water and food sealed in the #10 cans for the event, god forbid that it happen. I choose to live here and it certainly will not be the governments fault if there is an earthquake that flattens my house. Here is what I don't understand. If the news broke reports to me that an earthquake just happened in Japan and it was rumbling its way to me and will hit me in two days--and I am being told that the levy's may break, no water and no power for three months, guess what. I would pack up and go.
Why don't people empower themselves and own their own decicions?
do I feel bad for them, yes, have I chosen to help them, yes I donated as much money as I could spare to the Red Cross, but I am so tired of hearing about the victim.
Told you I would be unpopular, this is one medium that I don't like because it is more difficult to express my opinion without sounding heartless.
Now, I understand there are some people that didn't have the resources to leave. People with special needs, or without sufficient money or transportation, and that's why I do what I can to help. The people who were just too stubborn to leave are the ones who are probably doing all the looting and shooting and such.
True Mz, but this is where I am pissed at the mayor. He has his entire public transportation system underwater--when he could have used them to bus people out that could not drive or did not have the means. The he gets on the radio and swears and curses that no one is helping him. Way to deflect attention. Me thinks he doth protest too much.
