I got this idea from Fuzz and the counting thread. How often do you get paid?
I have gotten paid once a month for the last 11 years, so I am really used to it. However, before I married, it was really hard to budget, especially if I had something unexpected happen. Now that my husband gets paid weekly, it is easier!
I get paid every two weeks. That works out really well when my husband gets paid every two weeks and it's opposite from mine. But right now, the job he just started this week pays every week, and it's a paper check. I'm so spoiled by direct deposit that paper checks are just a pain in the butt. Also, even though he's only worked there 2 days, he hates it. So please pray for him to get this maintenence job that he wants. We're hoping they will call him back today. And then he'll be back to every two weeks, opposite mine, direct deposit, perfect!
On my woodworking projects, I get paid when I deliver or when the customer picks it up. If I know I can trust the people, I will let them charge and pay later, but most people pay on delivery.
On my web hosting, I process billings for the due accounts a few times a month. On my hosting business, I run all my expenses on one credit card then pay that off every month. Sometimes I get kind of lax in my billings because I know I don't need the money until my credit card payment is due . . . then I end up doing marathon billing sessions.
My wife works in a bank and gets paid every two weeks on Friday which is nice. This month for her is one of those nice months where it's a three paycheck month. She got paid on the 2nd, and will get paid on te 16th and also the 30th.
Awesome, I hadn't noticed that! I'm on the same pay schedule. I also love it when I get paid around the 1st of the month, it makes it easier to pay rent. When I'm on one of those off months where I get paid a week or more before rent is due, I basically go a whole week without spending any money, afraid I won't have it for rent. Or, I figure things wrong, and them I'm scrounging for rent.
My wife and I have the same schedule of direct deposits as MzHartz used to have. One deposited each Friday makes budgeting easy. This month it works out that I am the one with three paydays.
Mz, you and your husband are in my thoughts and prayers. It rots to work somewhere you don't like just to make financial ends meet. I have been fortunate but my wife has been in that situation.
I am every two weeks. I am also excited because it is a three paycheck month. That usually happens about twice a year.
The tax work I do on the side (just a little - still getting established) is payable upon delivery of the tax returns. Since it is really just family and friends right now, I am okay with waiting for payment for a couple of weeks.
When I win the big lottery, I am planning to take the lump sum so there will be no annual payments.

As for side jobs, when I was short on cash, I made people pay for their business cards up front. But then I got some orders in and got a cushion, so I made them pay on delivery. Well, with my last delivery, one person paid me, one person post dated a check for me, one person wasn't told I was coming and didn't have her checkbook, and one person didn't have any checks on them (their words). I'm going to start requiring payment up front again...
