well,


They just offered me the position that I had talked about last week. But they low-balled the salary. I am going to wait a day and then reject the offer. They may counter-offer. This is hard-ball, and I've always hated the back-n-forth like this. I guess I am lucky that I already do like the job I have.


But I sure could use some good vibes, intentions sent my way while I play the game!

1. Congrats on the offer.


2. Go for it! You do what you have to do. If they ask, you tell them. I think they know what they have in you, you deserve the position and they know they should pay you appropriately.


3. Good luck. We are here for you. It just means you can buy us more beer when we visit.

The pay would be equivalent to what I make when I get my usual amount of overtime in in my current position. Not enough for me to change what I do. We'll see.

I think they do web. The fact that they even were open to my idea of a position and liked it enough to put an offer in shows I am at least taken seriously. I feel liked, needed and respected. I am happy. This is just hard-ball, is all.

GO for the High ball to see if they match your offer. the worse thing that can happen is they pass you over and give it to some underserving peon who does not know any better.


You have to look out for you and decide if it is the best thing for you.


I am hopin you will get it. Like fuzzy said. It means a bigger party when we all get there.

You say the pay would be equivelent to what you now make with overtime. Does that mean less hours? If you're working 40 hours instead of 50 I'd say go for it. Your time is valuable and you would have 10 hours back. If you get overtime with the new position then that is still a win. If you think they want to negotiate with you then I would hold out for more. Get what you can get.

Good luck JD, Been there done that! Except I didn't play the back and fourth. I told them I was very interested in the position and asked up front to discuss the salary. Then explained it wouldn't pay for me to switch into a latteral position at this time but would reconsider if they would like too.

maybe you should just be upfront.

Where's Cp?  We could use his advice too.


don't listen to that Ray.  your time is valuable - but money is valuable too.  And if you are working less hours - then either way get as much as you think you are worth.

What good is a move up if you'll earn less money in the long run. Tell them what you want and why, and I would guess that if you're respected, they'll give it to you. (Or if you work for a company like the one I used to work for, they'll hire someone else in the position, pay them more money, and then fire you or lay you off. But I have a feeling the company you work for isn't quite that bad.)

I reiterate that it is good to know who you are dealing with and that they know you work and personal quality. You gave them the help to develop the position and responsibilities. They were just trying to see what they could get out of you, if you would just jump at the chance for a new position. I think it is good to be honest and straightforward. I think they will do that after you state your case. Just make sure you have your list of reasons and details that support your desired salary. You will be good to go.
