Product Review: Microwave Popcorn Popper

I saw this is a magazine awhile back and was very skeptical that you could make popcorn in the microwave with no oil whatsoever and still avoid the popcorn burning.

I tried a few kernals in a peice of tupperware first, and when they actually did pop I decided to give this thing a try.

When the box of Christmas gifts arrived, this was the one thing I had gotten for myself.  I tried it out and I have to say I'm very impressed!  You have to keep an eye on it, because once the popping stops and the corn stops being bounced around it IS going to burn.  But if you put enough kernals in and stop it before it has a chance to sit and burn it works really well.

I got a full pitcher of popcorn without any additives.  Of course, you might want to add a little butter or something for flavor.  But I actually like the taste of plain popcorn.

I suppose you could do the same thing with a big pyrex bowl if you poke some steam holes in the lid, but for only $14.99 I figured it was worth getting the "official" version.

MZ, don't try this.  It could kill you.

I think I would miss the little bit that some canola oil adds (and it helps the salt stick).

The salt is exactly what I'm trying to avoid. Sodium is the enemy of a person with high blood pressure. Just a little can spike your BP for hours.

I like making popcorn in my machine. I have to clean it when I'm finished, but it does make popcorn the best way. I do put too much butter on it. And I add a little parmesean cheese. Yes, we have established I am weird. My sister got me into that many years ago.

I understand the concept of this silly glass jar. If you understand how popcorn works, you just need a mechanism that can handle the heat in the microwave. Glass works. Plastic should not be used.

yeah, I just tested a few kernels in the tupperware to see if it would actually pop. I know the plastic would melt from the heat of the kernels sitting on it though.

You have one of those old fashioned popcorn machines like in a movie theater? I used to have one of those. LOVED IT. But it was a pain to clean and the salt on those pre-made packs was insane.

Man, I used to LOVE plain popcorn. I would pop a whole bunch and put it in one of those ice cream buckets and that would last me for a few days. I'd sit upstairs, next to the window, and eat strawberries and plain popcorn while playing on the computer.

When my throat started getting tight, I thought, "I'm not allergic to strawberries, am I? Nah, I've never had a problem with them before. It must be the seasonal allergies because I'm sitting next to an open window next to a tree."

Heh.

JR - I one of those simple plain stirrer popcorn machines. A little oil, popcorn kernels, lid on, plug in, let the thing spin, corn popped, unplug, flip over, bottom off, butter, salt and cheese the popcorn. Sit on the sofa and enjoy.

Courtesy of Donald, I have a Whirley Pop stovetop popcorn popper. It was one of the odd gifts he sent me in the couple years of his life. I also have a couple tubs of the "real movie theater style" popcorn popping oil.
