Songs That Heal

Hey!

Do you have a song that when you hear it is as healing as a call from a friend, or a good stiff drink?

For me pretty much anything from 70's Springsteen and E-street band- Born to Run- first song through Jungeland is like prayers in a bar room.

Lately 3rd Eye Blind "Graduate" makes me feel like I could kick-box a nuclear warhead and come out the winner.

I think for me it's more about how or when I heard the song that really impacts how I feel about it. For example, at a point in my life when I got a lot of friends that were real friends, when I felt like I had a support group for the first time, a friend lended me Balance by Van Halen, so now whenever I feel like I need support, I listen to that album.

That's pretty much how it is for me too.

A song kind of transports me back to a time when the song was first out, or if it was played during a traumatic time.

For example. I'll ALWAYS remember that during my first car accident TENDER YEARS by John Cafferty was playing. Anytime that song comes on while I'm driving I actually tense up.

I also remember a particularly bad night with a girl I liked and the song A GROOVY KIND OF LOVE by Phil Collins was playing. I hate that song with a passion now. Everytime I hear it I feel sad and lonely :(

hmmmmmm.

I agree with everyone else that it is not really healing but What song was playing at a particular point.

My partner and I had our first date on Easter Holiday in 1998 and THE PROMISE by WHEN IN ROME was playing on the radio. he bought the CD for me for christmas that year so that is our song.

When an old and dear friend passed away from AIDS I was listening to Barry Manilows greatest Hits and Even Now was playing. The whole CD still holds memories as each song means something.

My Ex Girlfriend ( yes I had one when I was 16) and I broke up to Europes "Carrie" sad as it is I still love that song.

One that's kind of funny for me is Sting's Ten Summoner's Tales. My ex got it for me, so the entire album reminds me of our relationship, and it soothes me. (We parted on really good terms.)

"Mary's Prayer" by Danny Wilson was popular during a horrible time in my life.  It was (and still is) so whistful sounding.  I can't help remembering all the time I spent listening to that song, wishing I was anywhere but where I was.  I don't know why that makes me smile so much now because I was so miserable then.  I think it was because my life has improved so much since then that it makes me feel content.

If I am in a lull, any Rock-a-billy song usually perks me up.

Something to believe in- Poison is one of my Healing songs.

I was at a low point when I heard Art Blakey And The Jazz Messengers version of "Moanin". It was there that I "got" jazz, what it was, what it is trying to do, the way it can be a filter in the way that you perceive the world. It was life changing.

(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay - Otis Redding does it for me when I'm sad and blue. When all of live seems totally out of control, it's Aerosmith's Amazing.

Not that I was down at that time, but I was real happy with U2's "Beautiful Day". Awesome driving to music. I had really despised U2 in the 90's, it was good to have one of my favorite bands "back".

I'm really impressed with what everyone's shared here.  I can relate to what everyone's saying.  I have some songs that are just inextricably tied to memories...break up songs...they're not usually uplifting to me, though...with one exception...when I broke up with a girlfriend of mine back in '92 I played Van Halen's version of "You're No Good" on repeat for about a week straight in my car.  Worked like a charm!

There were a few bands that were great at writing uplifting songs, especially back in the '80s.  In my opinion, INXS were the kings when it came to this.  They had some songs that felt like they reached out of the speakers and shook you to feel better, as low as I ever felt.  I'm thinking of "What You Need" and "Bitter Tears" especially.  There were others.

Speaking of Van Halen, they were great for that also, with the Sammy Hagar lineup.  "Right Now," "Mine All Mine," etc.

Yeah, "Beautiful Day" is a good one.  It does seem U2's taken to writing songs of encouragement in recent years.

I agree marky, Mine All Mine seems like such a significant song to me. I think it's because it came out at a point in my life when I was looking for religion, and wasn't happy with any of the options given to me. That songs seemed to fit perfectly.

Yeah, I think I was in a similar place when I first heard that. I think a lot of their songs from that time period have to do with spirituality in the context of recovery. Eddie was dealing with some challenges at the time.

Another song I find really uplifting is Mariah Carey's "Make It Happen."

I guess I really need to be clubbed over the head with a positive message!

I have four that come to mind:

U2's Bad- just brings me right back to the 80s. I played that song over and over (kinda like Jane!)

Bette Midler's The Rose- remindss me of my mom and her death. It let me see that every cloud has a silver lining!

Anything by Duran Duran brings me back to a much simpler and goofy time in my life!

Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here! My boyfriend before we moved here told me that song reminded him of me. So when I here it, I reminded of my first real love and loss!

I forgot the biggest one! Independence Day from Martina McBride. On July 4, 1993 I was a victim of a horrible crime. However, God worked a miracle through it and it changed the course of life forever- definitely for the better. So it is nice to have a song that gives me the feeling of empowerment that represents that day!
