It is a gorgeous day. The humidity has pushed out, it will be a more reasonable 80-83* today and the sun is shining. Would have been a great morning for a bike ride.

It's beautiful, 70 here right now. I hope I can fit in my jog this afternoon. I have a hair appointment at 4:30, and a party to go to at 7:30. So basically, I'll be getting my hair washed, cut, and styled, just to put in back in a ponytail and get sweaty enough that I'll need a shower (so I'll be washing my hair again) before I go to the party.

I third that...   For the past couple weeks I've had really bad insomnia.  I go to bed around 10:30 and then wake up around 12:30 and cannot fall asleep until around 3 or 4.  Then I have to get up by 6 and out the door by 7:15.

Are you on pain meds DS? If so, I bet that's your issue. Which sucks.

Mz, I think you are right about the pain meds. I took the last one last night, so tonight we will see if I sleep better.

Not sleeping sucks. Hope you can get that fixed, DS.

Ugh, it's "city-wide garage sale" weekend. That means that all traffic laws and regulations are only suggestions from now through Sunday.

People lose their minds at city wide yard sales. The father-in-law of an aquaintance was hosing people with his water hose when they tried to park in his driveway or block it. I thought that was hilarious! He's an old coot!

Tomorrow it the Route 66 Blowout.
There will be lots of cool rides (makes me think of Squonk the Bunnyman :D)!
Overpriced food carts -- I do hope there will be Indian Tacos!
Craft Booths of all sorts.
Bouncy jumps for the kids.
Art Show -- My favorite. Maranda places every year with her last minute pieces. It was like that for her in school too; she always made he best grades when she "threw something together".

Hope everyone has a really fun weekend! I'm not ready do dance yet, but I think I can make it up one side of Dewy and down the other (that's the street the blowout will be on).

Good day, all. I'm quite certain my vacation is over... so it is clearly Monday. I've sifted through my e-mail, so now I guess I should do something productive. Ah well...

Got lots done around the house on my time off. The sheetrock was installed around the windows on Monday, by Friday I was painting... and Sunday was the hanging of the mini-blinds. My house looks like a real house again!

Hope everyone had a good week last week.

Hey y'all. I'm just getting here to check in. It's been a busy day.

It started Friday afternoon. A van of basket ball boys were coming home from a one day basketball camp when an oncoming pickup came across center lane and struck them head on (only about 15 miles from home). The head coach, assistant coach, and nine of our boys were in the van. The two coaches were killed on impact. Two boys were treated and released, the rest were hospitalized at least over night. The pickup driver was a 70 year old man who was also killed. We don't know what caused him to cross the center, but word on the street is that he had been helping get ready for a garage sale and the last thing he said to anyone was "I'm just so tired, I gotta go home", and he left. The guess right now is that he either fell asleep, or was having a medical issue that caused him to black out.

From what I understand at this point, one of the boys is still in critical condition being kept in a drug induced coma while waiting for the swelling in his brain to subside. Reports are saying that they have let him come out close enough to test reflexes and he is responding to pain in extremities. There is hope for him. Two others are still in the hospital with shattered limbs, etc, but are not life threatening. The rest have been released. One of the boys lives directly across the street from us.

The head coach that died was in his first year teaching here. He was only 24. He came from another area so has no family here. The assistant coach has been at this school 14 years. He taught upper-level math, coached football, basketball, and golf. He was our pastor's brother (they were VERY close). I sat directly beside him in our church sound booth most every Sunday. The last thing I said to him last weekend was "See ya next week!".

His funeral is Friday. The school gym floor is being redone so it can't be held there. Our main city building is already committed so it can't be there. Our church is about the next biggest facility in town. We are expecting a HUGE crowd. Many of our own church people will come, then you add in the family, students, and many local citizens who have been rocked by this whole deal. Our main sanctuary seats about 300 max. We have an additional area that we spent most of the morning running cables to try to get audio and a video projector set up for an additional 250-300 there. I expect we still won't get everyone in the door. We are working on setting up remote parking and shuttle buses.

In a town of 3,500 you're not many steps away from knowing each person in that van in some manner. The elderly driver in the pickup was a banking customer of my wife's when she was at the bank before this latest one.

So, as we prepare, I spent the morning dragging coax through the insulation in the attic. This was something that needed to be done anyway. This gave us a push to do it now. I then spent the afternoon rebuilding the computer network. That was project I was planning on doing anyway, but I needed it to be done before getting serious about broadcasting our services on uStream video. We may broadcast the funeral service so I needed to get the broadcast computer off WiFi and onto wired LAN. Pastor is deciding if he wants it broadcast (for remote family memebers).

What a sad weekend, yet, we can be happy that more kids were not seriously hurt or even killed.

Wow, what sad events for your town Web. My condolences to all the friends, family, and neighbors, and good wishes for the injured boys to get better soon.

It is nice to know that when everyone is grieving, there is something you can do to help. It becomes less about doing it because it needs to be done and more about being part of the healing process.

Good day, all. I'm finally feeling a little caught up from being off all last week.

WOW, Web... what a tragedy. Horrible loss for you community. Yes, it is good to be able to lend some support. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I wish I could have taken some time off this morning as there was a funeral in my town too. A soldier who was killed in Afghanistan. My bike is down for repairs, so I didn't have the opportunity to ride with the Patriot Guard, or I certainly would have. The church where that service is to take place is only about 3 miles from my house. I pass it just about every day on my way to/from work. Usually I admire their lovely grounds. Today I had a hard time not crying as I was watching some of the Patriot Guard riders filing in to set up in advance of the crowd, and the police officers setting up traffic cones to block the lane closest to the church. Having attended a few of those services, I can honestly say it is incredibly difficult to not feel moved by the loss.

On the hopeful news front, Pambo tells me that she has an appointment with Dr. Casey in Detroit on Monday. He is the Dr. who did both of her surgeries related to the nerve issue. She and Richard are going to head up this weekend, so hopefully something good will come from that.

Otherwise, it is a beautiful day here. Just got back from having lunch outside on the terrace with Little Man. Its a shame to have to be inside... perfect day out there.

Hope everyone is having a good one.

I'm working on learning the uStream "Producer" software. It is a program that they provide that lets you make your broadcast look more professional. You can set up screen ahead of time then quickly switch between them and make it all fancy. I'm a little worried that our real maiden voyage into video broadcasting is on such an important event.

Learning under fire is one way to do it.

So sorry to hear about such a tragic moment for your community, Web cry  It's just heart breaking.  You all will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I'm getting nervous about the technology for the memorial service tomorrow. I'm working on getting this uStream broadcast set up and from what I'm hearing back, A LOT of people are planning on "tuning in". I just wish we had a few regular service broadcasts under our belt to know what the problems will be before such an important event.

The school called this morning, they are wanting to put up the live video in the school auditorium for extra seating and over flow. The hospital where most of the hurt kids went, want to put it up in a big room for their people and family still there. I'm sure there will be lots of individuals who will want to watch rather than take up a seat in an already over-full church.

In talking to the school, they said the other coach's hometown school did a live feed and they had over 1,000 viewers on it (and it couldn't handle the load). I'm not worried about uStream, I'm just worried about our own feed to uStream, computer problems, sound problems, etc.

It will be what it is, but I just hope it goes well since it's such an important service.

Web, is there any way to test it first?

Yeah, I've been testing it. I just keep finding little problems every time I test.

The hospital and school also want to do a test so I'm going to go to the church and do a live test for them at 1:15. I think I will put up live video and just play a past sermon audio and let it run for 30 minutes or so to see how that goes.

It's stupid little things. I bought that software and during a test yesterday it was giving "jitters" every few seconds. The whole screen would just jump and get weird. After lots of trying different things, I found that I just had to close the browser. It apparently didn't like me using the broadcast software and having the uStream web site open at the same time. I'm just afraid some little thing like that is going to be a problem.

The broadcast software is pretty cool though. It's like a little production system. I can make lower thirds (titles across the bottom), create scenes, and then easily transition between them. Neat stuff.

Even if there are problems, you'll be letting more people participate who wouldn't have been able to otherwise.

Good day, all. We have finally reached Thursday afternoon. I'm ready for this week to be over. Not a lot going on here today, so that makes for a very long day.

Web... glad you got that issue sorted out. I read the sentence about jitter and started down the mental road of trying to remember where all in the IP settings you can impact jitter. Its one of our least favorite issues to troubleshoot.

And now, I think I'm ready for a nap.

Testing complete. The jitter came back but I found it. I thought it was the browser, but today, I realized it was due to a "lower third" edit window being open. We ran out of bandwidth a couple times and lost our connection to uStream during the test so I lowered that a little and it seemed to be ok then. Tomorrow morning, I'm going to make sure all the office computers are shut down, and also turn off the WiFi in the router so we don't have phones connecting to it and sucking any bandwidth that way.

At this point, all we can do is hope it's good and ready to go.

Well, that was quick. And it apparently failed. Too bad, so sad.

Looks like another beautiful but boring day in my neighborhood.

Hope everyone has a great day.

The technology went well. We stayed connected to uStream and delivered the entire memorial service. We had around 300 connected the entire time. I do know the school had about 30 there watching from there. The worst thing was the constant ads in the free uStream service. But, it's free, it's gotta have ads.

We squeezed 400 chairs into our 300 chair sanctuary. We had 450 in the activities room connected with video. I doubt that I will ever see that many people in that church ever again.

It was a good service, just wish it didn't have to be a service. There is one more event Monday evening sponsored by the school. This one is to be more directed at the kids. Everyone is supposed to wear their school colors. Then things can settle down and the families can get on with the healing and trying to get back to something "normal".

I did hear that another of the kids was released from the hospital today. That leaves two still in.

I'm glad last week is over. What a long one.

The boy has VBS every morning, and two ball games this week. That should help to keep us running.
