Stop speeders from the inside of the car?

As Big brother as this sounds, I kind of like it. At least the idea- speed kills! It is proven. I think this would be very expensive and I cannot really imagine this ever being a reality every where in every car. But I like the philosophy!

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - Canadian auto regulators are testing a system that would enforce speed limits by making it harder to push down the car's gas pedal once the speed limit is passed, according to a newspaper report.

The system being tested by Transport Canada, the Canadian equivalent of the U.S. Department of Transportation, uses a global positioning satellite device installed in the car to monitor the car's speed and position. If the car begins to significantly exceed the speed limit for the road on which it's travelling the system responds by making it harder to depress the gas pedal, according to a story posted on the Toronto Globe and Mail's Website.

The pilot test, using 10 cars driven by volunteers, is believed to be the first in North America, although similar systems have been tested in several European countries, according to the newspaper.

The agency is also testing another system that warns drivers with a voice alarm and a light whenever they start to speed, the newspaper said. Those systems are already on sale, according to the report. The company that makes the alarm device, the Otto Driving Companion, has already sold 400 of the units in Winnipeg alone, the newspaper said.

Tractor trailor trucks are governed all the time....

I have driven equipment that cant go faster than 65 miles per hour (sorry Pip, dont know what that is in KPH)

That can be a hazzard in some situations where you need to accelerate in faster traffic to avoid an unsafe situation.

That's what I was thinking, Dylan. I can remember plenty of times on 465 in Indy where all 3 lanes were full, and I had to merge into traffic. It's speed up or get broadsided by a semi.

Persoanllay I dont like the idea of cars that are limited by technology...

I think drivers need to be better educated and cops need to enforce the traffic laws better...alot of situations can be avoided by better judgement and paying closer attention.

It has always been a mystery to me why manufactures make vehicles that can go twice the speed of light when the speed limit is half the speed of sound.

Put everyone in ole VW bugs and there would be a LOT less funerals to attend.

Make my Beatle a purple one!

Just as long as it has AC, a good stereo and gets 35 mpg, I am good

BUt I think the death totals on the road prove this does not happen!
